Overall Condition, Fair, Damage/Repair, foot broken with missing toes and chip. age cracks thoughout the figure crack in one foot. Minor old chips in places. Additional Information: A Janus Reliquary Figure(Byeri Figures) from the Fang people(Ntumu Sub-group Northern Fang) Equatorial Guinea. This Janus guardian figure is not often noted among the Fang, although early reports mention male-female reliquary figures on shrines. This is a Very strong sculpture with a lot of presence! As sculpture. These Byeri figures stand out as a fine example of good carving in a later Fang style, and the sculptural detail is testament to the Fang artist who shaped them. Fang memorial sculpture has a long history of use and was in fact photographed as early as 1907(Tessmann 1913/1972, vol. II) However the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. During migrations which took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Fang people moved to their present area becoming part of a complex overlay of population of approximately 200,000 which stretches from southern Cameroon into Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Living in small forest communities, the Fang focused upon tightly knit kinship and lineage systems. Stressing continuity and relationships, the kinship system was employed to emphasize the veneration of ancestors through the use of figurative sculptures. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines, housing memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri, containing their bones, under the care of an elder known as the Esa. The ancestors were consulted before any serious event such as hunting, traveling, marriage, war, or planting was undertaken. The Esa, the shrine keeper, was the oldest living member of the clan

POT: RARE 3-LEGGED, WITH RAWHIDE
POT: RARE 3-LEGGED. WITH RAWHIDE Height: 3 1/2" Diameter: 4" Weight: 9.4 oz A delightful. VINTAGE pot made by the Tarahumara Indians of the Copper Canyon region of Mexico. The southwestern part of the state of Chihuahua. This globular pot has the unusual element of three legs. Suggesting an ancient connection with PreColumbian pottery found throughout Mexico. Hundreds of years ago the rawhide was used to maintain the integrity of the pot as well as to add a layer of insulation-insuring that cold. Morning dew did not affect the usual seeds within. Own a piece of the past with this wonderfully designed pot. Abrasion marks and a repaired leg are evident. Posted with

RARE OLD TAÏNO TAINO ZEMI COHOBA RITUAL CARIBBEAN RITUAL STAND WEATHERED PATINA
The Ta ïno were an ancient aboriginal people who inhabited the Caribbean area- notably Haiti. The Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Puerto Rico. Contact with early European colonizers, staring in the late 15 th century. Eventually led to their tragic extinction- brought about by the invaders’ new diseases, enslavement, executions, conversion and assimilation. The religious beliefs of this rich, multidimensional culture revolved around the zemi. A word signifying not only an ancestor but also the object which represented the ancestor. Idols were created using a range of materials including wood, stone, ceramic and fiber. Wooden zemi figures similar to this one(being auctioned) would have been used as a stand for the ceremonial inhalation of cohoba. A hallucinogenic substance which allowed the Ta ïno shamans to contact the ... morespirit world. The platform extension at the top of these figural stands would have been used to hold magical substances to be ingested during ceremonies and rituals. Zemi figures were carved with a skeletal appearance(hollow eyes and prominent rib ages) in order to represent death and. Thus, evoke otherworldliness. As you can see from the pictures. There is a consistent overall weathering to the wood of this zemi carving as well as signs of natural aging. There are age cracks on this piece. Particularly one on the“overhead” platform, another on the body and arm of the skeletal figure as well as an old repair to the shelf(platform) to reattach a section which had broken off in the past. The dimensions of this zemi are: H = 22.5” W = 8” D = 9” I will not volunteer a dating for this piece mainly because I am not an expert on Taino art and I am aware that it is rare to find exceptional old examples other than in museums or in outstanding private collections. I will simply let the carving’s superb overall weathering speak for itself as it seems to indicate considerable age. I am selling the this zemi"as-is" and leave any further research and authentication of this zemi to i

Antique Mexican Presentation Mask 19th c. - early 20th c. (REAL TEETH)
I am offering this. Antique, Mexican, Hand Carved, wooden mask as pictured. It is late 1800’s to early 1900’s. It has oil marks from facial oil on the inside- so it has been“danced” It has several old coats of paint. And loss of paint, and lots of wear, and an old repair for a crack on the top, that looks great. Whatever happened condition-wise was perfect. It is truly a fine mask, and shows very well as you can see. It has been one of my favorite pieces, and I would like someone else to enjoy it now. The most UNIQUE or possibly to some CREEPY aspect of this mask if the REAL mammal Teeth! The measurements of this piece is approximately 10" X 7" X 6" I stand behind all of my products and merchandise. If there is ever any ... morediscrepancy I encourage all of my buyers to contact me so that I may be able to rectify any and all concerns. Thank you for viewing.

Bold and Stunning Nazca Textile Fragment ~ Peru
PERUVIAN NAZCA TEXTILE FRAGMENT Bold color and dramatic design make this style a favorite among collectors of modern art. This fragment was woven in the form of a abstracted/stylized monkey. Very good condition. Effectively backed with a compatible color. Professionally and meticulously conserved(cleaned. Mounted, and stretched) I cannot authenticate the exact age of this textile but again it is a beautiful example used by this ancient culture. This is part of an estate of a collector who traveled the world for more than 50 years. DIMENSIONS: 26" x 11 1/2" textile on red background only) Located in the Ica and Nasca Valleys of the south coast of Peru. Ancient Nasca culture dominated a large part of southern Peru between 100 B.C. and A.D. 700. The Nasca people lived in a dry desert environment, intersected with rivers carrying rain ... morefrom the Andes. In areas with sufficient water, they practiced agriculture and exploited marine resources. Because they depended on water and other natural resources to live, many Nasca activities were devoted to the spiritual powers that controlled the forces of nature. Textiles with elaborate decoration and images. Including depictions of the ritual use of trophy heads, are found in both late Paracas and early Nasca cultures"

TLAQUEPAQUE Vintage Mexico POTTERY PLATES DISHES CUPS c. 1930 ? Tourist FOLK ART
Here is a wonderful lot of glazed hand painted Tlaquepaque pottery! From what I was told. These pieces are from the 1930's and were made for tourists. and are highly collectible now. I purchased these pieces together. So I'm selling them together too. The true colors do not show up well in the photos, they are so much nicer in person! The background color of the pottery is a lovely earthy light camel tan. I do not see any markings to indicate if they are from Mexico. Or who painted them, but I am not an expert on Tlaquepaque pottery. The lot consists of three plates that are approx 7.5" in diameter, four plates/saucers that are approx. 5" in diameter, and four cups which have hand painted scenes all the way around them. I placed the cups upside-down to show the designs. Some of the pieces have wear and some glaze/paint ships, ... moreI don't see any breaks or repairs. Will be shipped fully insured. Thank you!
