In earlier times, new-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; they were awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, and their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. By the 19th century the cult of the Ere Ibeji was firmly established and continues to this day. The death of one or both twins is regarded as a great calamity for the fa

The figure is made from hard wood and is in stable condition besides the old insect damaged already arrested. The figures exemplify the ideas of fertility and continuity of the family. These relatively uncommon sculptures are known as"lu me" or"wooden person" and can be over 60 centimeters in height. They do not portray ancestors, but are stylized portraits of real individuals, closely representing the hairstyle, body markings, and physiognomy of the wife. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Worn patina, Additional Information: The helmet and skirt suggest that this is a colonial era piece. Among the Yoruba. Who have the highest rate of twins in the world, the arrival of twins is seen as both a blessing and an omen because of the high mortality rate. If a twin dies, an image dedicated to Ibeji, the deity of twins, is carved to serve as the earthly abode for the spirit of the deceased. AFRICAN DOLLS FOR PLAY AND MAGIC, by Dagan. Among the Yoruba, twins have special powers, much like the orisha. and are to be treated with respect throughout their lives. If a twin dies, the mother seeks a diviner's advice about which carver should make the ere ibeji to stand in for the dead child. Once the figure is carved, the artist activates it by soaking it in a special solution and rubbing it with specific oils. The mother treats the ere ibeji as if it were alive, feeding, dressing, and bathing the image. Its face is washed with soap or sugarcane fiber, then rubbed with a cloth and indigo or laundry bluing. After a period of time, the facial features may be rubbed away. The Lobi live as farmers and spend much time in their fields. They have produced numerous iron. Brass, and bronze figures currencies and and jewelry depicting the snake. This can be understood as the snake is very often associated to the Lobi mythical beings. Also, the Lobi encounter numerous serpents, including the Bites viper and the Boa Constrictor. To protect them from the dangers that the snakes represent forged iron snakes were either worn on their person or placed on personal altars. In addition to examples such as this serpent that probably served as an altar object, women will attach smaller sinuous, flat-modeled images of serpents to the sides of their legs just above the ankle reaching up the leg close to the knee. Generally placed on the outer side of the leg they may often be on the inside of the leg or both sides as well. The bodies will be displayed with a sinuous set of curves as though the snakes were moving through the grass. In many cases, the heads are simply defined as a triangular shape with the mouth possibly noted with a thin line beaten into the side of the face. This is a very nice Bakongo Fetish which I picked up in the D.R.C. in 2009 whilst in the Katanga Province. He is an imposing little character who stands ... moreat approximately 14 inches in height. His mouth is pulled open in a fearsome fashion. His body is bound by a rope and he carries a very large terrestrial snail shell on his back. There is a wicker-weaving bound to his back and nail pierces his left upper back, in the vicinity of where the shoulder blade would be. He is also adorned with a woven head-dress. Stuffed with the feathers of a Red Rooster or Red Hen. This fetish has its own special energy and is not a new piece. I am estimating the age of this piece to be between 30 and 40 years. Note in the picture that a portion of the base is missing due to some very old insect damage. The rope which binds his torso is hiding a stomach cavity which is utilized for placing herbs and magical material. This piece is also perfect for adherents of Santeria.
