Masks play a prominent role in Makonde life serving to mark the end of the initiation and circumcision cycle for boys as they move into manhood. The Lipico masks show a wide range of Makonde life and society as they depict initiates. Villagers, coastal Arabs and colonial officials. Makonde will embellish their masks with human hair and beards, insert pegs for teeth, will whiten the eyes and in a quest for realism often show human deformities. In some cases There will be elaborate scarification on the face. Such scarification was done as a part of initiation ceremonies, and also when a ranking member of society assumed a more important political status or social level. Makonde masks were worn on top of the head. Sometimes they have a lip plug. Which Makonde men used to wear. The wood is njala wood. The mask was used for boys' circumcision rites and other ceremonies. Recommended Reading: 653

Chips in hairstyle, stain, wear and scrapes, Additional Information: This carved standing female figure with a large head. An elaborate coiffure, a serene facial expression, a prominent abdomen with scarification, and hands resting on the belly comes from the Luba people. The carving is a work of a skilled artist working in a classic Luba style! The Luba excel at the veneration of feminine beauty and motherhood. And much of their skillfully crafted artworks, like this exquisite headrest, reflect this ideal. It is through woman that the continuity of the clan is ensured. It is through woman that the ancestor reveals himself anew in the child"Neyt. F, 1994) The woman gives life and nourishes the community. In Holding or presenting breasts she claims her privilege status as guarantor of fecundity and well-being for members of her society. The history of the Luba can be traced back at least 500 years. And they have dominated much of southern part of the Congo during most of this time span. At the height of their expansion their empire stretched east all the way to Lake Tanganyika. Luba Society is still a large culture, numbering about 1,000,000, and their influence remains significant. While there are dozens of art-producing peoples of Congolese origin who have contributed significantly to the recognition of Central African art, the Luba, along with their closely related neighbors the Hemba, are debatable the most important of them all, with many masterpieces scattered throughout the world. The world's greatest museums and private collections are filled with Luba sculpture. As the beauty of some of their finest pieces transcends those of almost any other African culture. Their impac
