In this Cameroon Grasslands region hats are made in wide variety of media such as vegetable fiber. Cotton, and feathers, and in different shapes. Hats are part of prestigious regalia in the Cameroon grasslands. They are worn by men during special ceremonies. It is unimaginable to see a notable in an outfit without his hat. Additional Information: A Janus Reliquary Figure(Byeri Figures) from the Fang people(Ntumu Sub-group Northern Fang) Equatorial Guinea. This Janus guardian figure is not often noted among the Fang, although early reports mention male-female reliquary figures on shrines. This is a Very strong sculpture with a lot of presence! As sculpture. These Byeri figures stand out as a fine example of good carving in a later Fang style, and the sculptural detail is testament to the Fang artist who shaped them. Fang memorial sculpture has a long history of use and was in fact photographed as early as 1907(Tessmann 1913/1972, vol. II) However the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. During migrations which took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Fang people moved to their present area becoming part of a complex overlay of population of approximately 200,000 which stretches from southern Cameroon into Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Living in small forest communities, the Fang focused upon tightly knit kinship and lineage systems. Stressing continuity and relationships, the kinship system was employed to emphasize the veneration of ancestors through the use of figurative sculptures. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines, housing memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri, containing their bones, under the care of an elder known as the Esa. A motif seen in other examples of Fang sculpture. The figure is covered by a black oily surface that was the result of palm oil and copal resin being applied to the figure. The heart shaped face, facial features and body shape locates the figure among the Ntumu, a northern Fang sub-group. SPANISH STYLE ORIGINAL BOUDOIR BED DOLL VERY GOOD CONDITION ALL ORIGINAL

It's nearing Spring and it's time to do some cleaning which means thinning out some of my beautiful boudoir doll collection. This one is just as I purchased it including tiny to small holes in each layer of the skirts. The right foot is where the damage is. But can't be seen when the dress is down. There's minor water damage as shown in the photo. Her hair is marvelous and fitted out with velvet flowers. She's even wearing a small bracelet on her left hand. The fingernails are done in a pale pink and on her right hand, the little finger is broken off. Her outfit is quite unique. Especially around the front of the neckline. She's been treated gently over the years. Her neck is ... morea bit soft and leans toward the back, but I kept her on a doll stand near the back of a shelf and she looks perfect where I've placed her. The doll stand doesn't come with the doll. She's 29" tall from feet to the top of the rose in her hair. It's a shame I can only list with 12 photos. Under her skirt is a large, light weight cardboard card sewn into the fabric(so I can't see what all it says) and it's marked EL ES? 15 Vistas. I don't have any idea what this means. I purchased this sometime back and it may have been in the home of a smoker. I can't be sure. I've never collected them for their value. But rather bought the ones I thought were unusual and beautiful. She's ready to ship for free with insurance.

Sulup Nia(Devil Eagle) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. The imagery on this mola can be interpreted a couple of different ways. One view is that the eage(or is it a dragon? is swooping down and attacking the monkey in the lower-right corner. My interpretation is that the devil-eagle is actually a spirit rising from the monkey. Size. Style and cloth indicate this is probably a 1950s mola, though it could be early 1960s or late 1940s. Note the use of early printed cloth inserts. Early. Damaged Noh(Frog Design) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This wonderful. Damaged mola depicts a classic"Rastafarian Frog" one of the earliest designs known. Eleanor York Bell, who collected the earliest molas known, collected on with this design in 1908- a piece which is now lost(the Smithsonian has a photo of it, but her relatives got the mola) The ragged cutting and sewing, the early archaic design and the use of very light balanced plainweave cloth for the base layer all point to an early date. It could be anwhere from the 1930s to the 1950s. Note the frog-within-a-frog design. Early Sulup(Eagle) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This very rare mola appears to be quite early- I would say 1940s or early 1950s. The overall design is very unusual and the use of long free-standing applique strips is very. Very rare. I believe it may be a"galu" or"kalu" spirit place) mola. It depicts a large eagle, spread-winged above two other eagles- with the three birds forming a diamond-shaped space between them. The entire base layer is made of a very early printed fabric(probably 1930s or 1940s) A rare thing indeed. Selling this RARE Collection of Antique and Vintage MOLAS from Kuna tribe. Panama. Some acquired from Kit Kapp collection, some from Bob Huber collection, some purchased in Panama in 1980s. Most Molas I am selling are from the early 1900s to 1970. They have never been exhibited or previously sold, all from my private collection, which I gathered in about 35 years. This one is from the mid 1900s. Nice design wih figures, only one framed, glued to the backing. Frame dimentions are 17" x 21" with no glass. Private purchase Mola. A Kuna word, has several meanings: fabric or cloth, shirt or upper garment for men or women, brightly decorated women´s blouses, or colorful layers of fabric, cut and hand-sewn into designs for fronts and backs of Kuna women´s blouses. Kuna women from the San Blas Archipelago produce most of the work, ... morethough some molas are also made by Kuna women from inland Panama and western Colombia. FINE ANTIQUE CLASSIC WOOL AYMARA COCOA BAG - BEAUTIFUL COLORS
We are not experts. But we think this is an antique cocoa bag produced by the Aymara Indians of Peru or Bolivia. It is certainly a lovely wool textile. The size is 20 inches wide and 18 1/2 inches high. The total length of the strap is 13 inches. The strap may be a more recent replacement. The bag opens and closes with a tie-string that goes around the top. The front is interesting: there is a central seam but has two openings, one about mid-way and the other at the top. Lovely woven designs and just the most gorgeous colors.

Shibipo Drinking Vessel, mid 20th cent.
2.5" X 6.5" thin-walled shallow bowl. Painted decoration The Shibipo are an indigenous people of the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest. Living along the Ucayali River. They still retain many of their old traditions ~ especially their form of shamanism. Living in scattered villages in the jungle forest extending from Ecuador to Brazil. The Shibipo are known for their rich and complex cosmology which translates graphically into the maze-like patterns reproduced on textiles and pottery(usually made by women) This bowl was used indigenously, not something made-to-be-sold to tourists. There is clear evidence of residue from some liquid left at the bottom of the bowl ~ it may have been used to ritually consume ayahuasca. Hand formed red terracotta earthenware(redware) A pedestal bowl with a half-dome arcade covered in perching birds–they look like doves and there’s at least 78 of them! The arch is centered with a bull’s head(and even this has a bird on it) and flanked by guards. There's a twisted rope loop at the top for hanging. On the base are three more doves. Description This antique circa 16th-19th century Mexico clay pottery Conquistador torso figurine. Is hand formed in pale red earthenware(terracotta) clay pottery. It is wearing a typical Conquistador type skirt and armoured upper body. The pronounced chest plate form has been damaged, the arms and head have been broken off and the legs are missing leaving the hollows in the bottom where they were fitted originally. It has hand incised and pressed circle detail to the skirt and it has a collectors pencil mark to the base'MEXICO' CONDITION Apart from the missing head. Both arms and both legs, damage to the chest, it also has a chip and some nibbles to one side of the skirt at the bottom. Vintage 1960s Kuna Mola: Two-Headed Chicken
1960s Mola With Two-Headed Chicken. One of the very first molas I collected. Purchased from a leading textile dealer in the Boston area. It depicts a two-headed chicken with superbly embroidered heads and cool, folky appliqued title across the top. Probably mid-1960s.
