Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE Senufo Kpelie Tribal Mask African Côte d'Ivoire Poro Cowrie Shells& Raffia Normal 0 false false ... morefalse EN-US JA X-NONE Up for bid is an amazing and wonderfully crafted Senufo kpelie mask. Traditionally danced by men. While playing the character of a woman, the Senufo kpelie mask is a well known art form among the Senufo tribe, characterized by its various perimeter projections, and humanoid features. Their various projections and strange appearance are said to represent the inherent imperfection in humans and humanity. Although this ethnic group spans across a number of African countries, I believe this piece is from the Côte d'Ivoire(aka Ivory Coast) The mask measures approximately 13” long(sans raffia) x 6 1/4" wide. One of the projections has a minor chip on it and another has a minor crack. Having said this though, the mask is in great condition with a large amount of pigmentation still present. A mane of raffia fiber surrounds the mask, and its perimeter is decorated with cowrie shells, widely recognized in West African cultures as a sign of prosperity. I will start the bidding off at $35.00. Please see the shipping calculator for shipping and handling costs to your location. 14 day return policy if not satisfied(buyer pays for shipping) PayPal buyers only please. Antique Namji Doll Namchi Female Fertility Beaded Cameroon African Art Description: V intage Namji/Namchi beaded African doll that has been mounted on ... morean acrylic base for display. Small beads on body appear to have been strung and then cemented to body appearing very old and primitive. One of the more interesting dolls I have see in a while. Namchi(Namji) dolls. Among the Namchi people of Cameroon, unadorned dolls made by blacksmiths are played with by young children. When beads, cowrie shells, bells, coins, and other ornaments are added, however, the doll becomes a surrogate baby for a woman who is having difficulty getting pregnant. The woman treats the figure like a baby, feeding it and carrying it on her back. The Namchi/Namchi group lives in the north west of Cameroon and is famous for its geometrical carved and highly decorated dolls. The girls learn their motherly duties by playing with them. Usually they always carry the dolls around with them. Feeding them and telling them stories from the old ones before going to bed. Condition: Good condition considering previous owner has written on bottom 100+ years. Also marked on tape on base is namji doll, cameroon. There is some breakage at top of head where beads attach but otherwise in quite fine condition. Approx. Measurements: 9" including base. Made in: Cameroon. According to previous owner. Color: Dark brown with yellow and red beads. Be sure to check out my other vintage items on sale: Click on pictures to SUPERSIZE- Please note in bidding. The Makonde of Tanzania and Mozambique are one of the most prolific art producing peoples in eastern Africa. One of the most prominent of these arts are the life size helmet masks called Lipico which are worn on the top of the head partially covering the face and slightly tipped upward so that the dancer can see. Masks play a prominent role in Makonde life serving to mark the end of the initiation and circumcision cycle for boys as they move into manhood. The Lipico masks show a wide range of Makonde life and society as they depict initiates. Villagers, coastal Arabs and colonial officials. Makonde will embellish their masks with human hair and beards, insert pegs for teeth, will whiten the eyes and in a quest for realism often show human deformities. In some cases There will be elaborate scarification on the face. Such scarification was done as a part of initiation ceremonies, and also when a ranking member of society assumed a more important political status or social level. Makonde masks were worn on top of the head. Sometimes they have a lip plug. Which Makonde men used to wear. The wood is njala wood. The Kwadja of the northern sector of the Nkambe Division of West Cameroon are a blacksmith group of cardinal importance. They produce a wide array of iron products and in the past were responsible for the manufacture of these iron plates shared like stretched hides. Which were used through the western grasslands of Cameroon as a medium of exchange. Such Kwadja plates, were commonly found in the 1930s and 1940s among all Kaka peoples of the Upper Donga Valley and were also utilized by the Mambila, who resided on the plateau just north of the Donga River. The Mambila. Anxious to obtain this valuable currency, willingly traded salt, beads, and imported tobacco(the last coming from Nigeria via the Hausa routes originating along the Benue River) Despite the increasing popularity and availability of British currency in the Nkambe district in the 1950s, the Kwadja plates were still utilized and highly prized.
