The Yoruba. With a high rate of multiple births, feel that twins are very special and powerful. If a twin dies, a figure dedicated to Ibeji, the deity ... moreof twins, is carved to be the earthly abode of the spirit of that twin. The figure is nurtured by the mother and/or the surviving twin. Different hair styles, scarification, figure, shape and style of carving indicate the origin of a figure. Often dressed and fed they are highly revered. The taller of the two measures 10.5" by 5" wide. It has a crack on the left side of the face and a small crack on the base. The other also has a small crack on the base. Items of this age almost always show signs of the many years of use and handling. These twins are adorned with glass beads, cowrie shells and iron wrist rings or bracelets. The cracks are shown in the attached photos.

OLD YORUBA SHANGO DANCE WAND NIGERIA #2396 ~ For African Art Gallery
YORUBA SHANGO DANCE WAND#2396 Tribe: Yoruba. Country: Nigeria. Material: Wood. Pigment. Size: 20" 50.8 cm) Tall. Item: 2396. Condition: Good. The Yoruba Shango staff forms. Sculpted in relief, are used in special festivals and processions, followers of Shango, the Yoruba god of thunder, carry dance wands, called oshe shango, depicting a female devotee with Shango's symbol, the double-headed axe. Shango is thought to control the great powers of nature as one of the orisha, or gods. Shango. Who controls thunder, is associated with the expansion of the Oyo empire in western Yorubaland. The historical personage Shango was a descendant of Oranmiyan and the tyrannical fourth king of Oyo. Oral traditions maintain that he was despot, coerced into surrendering his crown and committing suicide. His supporters denied his death and declared ... morethat he had become a god, merged with the forces of thunder and lightning, which they call down on their enemies. The Shango legend illustrates a significant aspect of Yoruba orisha: they are not idealized. Shango was a sacred king but he can still be presented as a remorseless despot whose need for control overstepped the boundries suitable to political authority. In his attempt to control mystical and magical powers. He was unable to master them, and was eventually controlled by them. Once a mortal, Shango did not die, but he commands great powers of nature as an orisha. In dreadful storms he hurls flashes of lightning upon those who do not respect him. These thunderbolts take the form of ancient stone axes that are exposed on the surface of the earth after heavy rains. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Superb Yoruba Edan Bronze Metal Ogboni Oshugbo Male & Female Ceremonial Figures
For sale are two bronze metal figures of a man and a woman. I bought them several years ago from the estate of a man who worked in Nigeria and the surrounding regions in the 1960s for USAID(US Agency for Internaitonal Development) He owned a lot of non-tourist items. Many from the Yoruba people. Take a look at the photos so you can make your own determination as to their age and purpose. I’ll give you my opinion based on my research. But I’ll defer to you if you have more expertise. And I'm starting these at $9.99, so you can set the value. The two figures are made of bronze or similar metal(the spike is magnetic. But the figures are not) They have a rich green patina and signs of age. The male figure looks like he was embedded in the ground at some point for a period of time. All but an inch or so of his spike has rusted away and there’s ... moredirt and grass in the creases of his base. The female has a full spike(the point is dull. But still there) It’s about 5.25 inches long(13.3 cm) Both figures show tribal scarification on their faces(cheeks and forehead) Each is nude and is holding what looks like a Dance Wand perhaps(it’s a narrow item with a human face) Also, each has what looks like a rope or other braided item crisscrossing front and back and then going around the waist. And each has a necklace with what looks like a pouch or amulet at the end. The female is 8 inches tall(without counting the spike) or 20.3 cm. The male is closer to 7.5 inches(19 cm) Although they lack the chains(and I see no evidence that there ever were chained together) they remind me of edan oshugbo. A pair of bronze images male/female mounted on iron spikes, linked by an iron chain. This is from a UVA site about the Yoruba and Oshugbo- The Oshugbo society(also known as Ogboni) functioned as a town council. A civic court, and for electing new kings and dethroning a bad or unpopular one. It imposed curfews and executed serious offenders. The society still exists in Yoruba today, but not to the same extent. Its authority
Antique/Vintage Yoruba Shango Dance Wand, Staff, Yorouba, Nigeria, African
This is a antique/vintage African Yoruba Shango dance wand staff. From Yorouba. Nigeria. It is 21 1/4" long. One of the features which makes me believe the piece is original, are the two worn wood attachment pins in the bottom of the staff, see photo. The piece has several issues, starting at the top, the headdress has been cracked and poorly repaired. The head was attached to the body and the area around the neck were filled in with some type of filler, which is mostly missing. The right arm was broken and poorly repaired. There are small areas of very old paint pigments. Even through the piece has the condition issues, there is nothing that would suggest the piece is not old and original. There is a number inked on the back of the stem, 199" Overall, it is an interesting and attractive piece, She is offering up refreshments. PayPal ... moreonly.

Among the Yoruba lifting breasts ... moreis a gesture of greeting, offering, acceptance(see William Fagg, John Holcombe 3rd, YORUBA SCULPTURE OF WEST AFRICA, p.84) Such figures were places on shrines to honor the ancestors. The figure holding her prominent breasts might be associated with the deity guarantor for fertility or fecundity. This figure could be considered a traditional representation of a typical religious devotee found on many shrines among the Yoruba of central and southern Nigeria. Placed in a shrine she could be a devotee of either Eshu or Shango, major deities in the Yoruba pantheon. The Yoruba are the largest culture in Nigeria and one of the largest in all of Africa. The scope of their political influence is immense both nationally and in the parts of Nigeria that they occupy. They can be traced back hundreds of years-perhaps even a thousand. Though heavily exploited during the Slave Trade periods. They have steadfastly held onto an enormous and multiple layers set of beliefs and rituals that can still be found today. Almost all of these practices involved some sort of statuary or mask, so the amount of their artistic output is enormous. Recommended Reading: R. F. Thompson: Black Gods and Kings: Y

Lot 69, Ere Ibeji Female with Protective Beads, Yoruba / Santeria / Oshun
Here is a fine example of Ere Ibeji Male& Female Twins Yoruba. Nigeria, measuring 9" by 3" Adorned with yellow beads(Oshun) and metal wire(Oggun) for protection When the carving of the Ere Ibeji is completed. The artist is given a feast and payment as determined by the Orishas. Once the figure is brought to the family dwelling, it is placed on a shrine dedicated to Elegba with the hope that the Orisha or soul, which was split in two parts when the twins were born, will now again reside in the figure that represents the dead twin. The sculpted figure is treated and cared for as if it were alive. It is rubbed in sacramental oil, washed, fed, clothed, sung to and prayed to. It is kept standing during the day, and is laid down at night. Often it will be dressed in the same clothing as the living twin, or be decorated in a beaded ... morevest or shown with raised sandals, indicating possible royal connections. The responsibility of caring for the ibeji is borne by the mother and female family members of subsequent generations. The sculpture is expected to avert evil from the household, strengthen the manifestations of family love, stare down death, illuminate the pathway through the valley of immortality, and bring good fortune to all who treat it with respect and offer it tokens of affection. Conversely, bad fortune and curses may be engendered if the ibeji is ignored. PLEASE NOTE: PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 4 DAYS OF PURCHASE. BECAUSE OF RECENT PROBLEMS WITH PAYMENTS NOT RECEIVED.
