An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa. And are renowned for their ... morecopious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history of human sacrifice. The Yoruba culture is subdivided into a number of cults. Each identified by particular thing it holds sacred. This mask originates from the Gelede cult, which focuses its attention on the power of elderly women. During Gelede festivities helmet masks such as these are worn on or over the head with a raffia costume, and danced in reverence and celebration. On the'cheeks' of the face are large identifying scarification marks. It still has most of its original pigment, including white(kaolin) green, etc. Color of the pigment is faded in some areas, but still represented strongly for the most part, and the piece stands well on its own without support. Wear and age marks are in evidence as is common, including minor age cracking, rub marks, etc. but the piece does not appear to have undergone any serious breaks or repairs. This is a beautiful, prominent, eye catching standalone piece, and a highly coveted artform from the Yoruba culture! This piece measures in at 10.5" x 10.5" x 11" With a weight of three and a half pounds. MEDIUM: Wood. Pigment NOTHING we sell at African Tribal Creations is made in China. Few African artisans achieved as highly as the people of the now extinct Benin kingdom. The Benin people were denizens of Nigeria, and they brought the art of bronze(actually mostly brass) casting to a height that has likely not yet been exceeded on the continent of Africa. Upon the arrival of European missionaries and invaders, the discovery of Benin art led them to the belief that this art was stolen from the Jews or Egyptians, and could not have been produced by these people who were at that point considered subhuman. Extraordinary masks and figures had been produced using the simple lost-wax casting method, in addition to the now famous life-sized brass leopard figures, exclusively associated with the oba. Fine Antique Pair of Yoruba Ibeji Statuettes Oyo style - Nigeria
This is a fine pair of Ibeji statuettes from the Yoruba tribe in Southern Nigeria. Ibeji statuettes were carved upon the passing of a twin– so as to honor the spirit of the passed– and kept by the surviving twin. Until their own death, at which time the statuette was considered to lose its power. Ibeji statuettes exist in great variations of styles– which are traceable in part to the region of origin but also to the family lineage and its cult. The pair here is made of a female and a male. Both show beautiful characteristics. The elevated hairdo is made of four lobes(with interesting triangular motives in between) Which is typical of the Oyo region in Northern Yoruba land. The face is calm. Expressive and smiling with diamond shape eyes and low, pointy ears. Scarifications are comprised of a mix of vertical and horizontal lines. The body ... moreis well proportioned. With round shoulders and large arms. There is also a nice intricate triangular scarification work on the belly(the recurring use of triangular motive is noticeable on this pair) The legs are short. And compact– and actually pretty large, with protruding bottoms. Both statuettes show an extraordinary very dark. Shiny patina– which makes for very old pieces, I believe probably late 19 th/early 20 th c. Dimensions are 11x3.

ANTIQUE YORUBA LEATHER AND COWRIE CEREMONIAL BELT
THIS IS A CEREMONIAL BELT WORN BY YOUNG YORUBA GIRLS FOR DANCE CEREMONIALS. I DO NOT KNOW THE SIGNIFICANCE. BUT I HAVE SEEN THEM PERFORMING WEARING THESE BELTS DURING ELABORATE CELEBRATIONS, SUCH AS THE BOAT DISPLAYS ON THE LAGOS LAGOON. UNLIKE MANY AFRICAN BELTS, THIS IS MADE OF LEATHER. THE COWRIES USED FOR DECORATION ARE COMMON TO MUCH OF AFRICAN ART AND CULTURE, BECAUSE THE SHAPE OF THE SHELL IS BELIEVED TO RESEMBLE THE FEMALE VULVA. THIS BELT IS HIGHLY UNUSUAL IN HAVING SO MANY COWRIES. I TRIED TO COUNT THEM BUT LOST TRACK SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 300 AND 400 SHELLS! THE BELT IS ABOUT 23 INCHES LONG, WITH THREE-INCH LEATHER THONG TIES AT EACH END AND ABOUT FIVE INCHES WIDE, INCLUDING THE FRINGE OF COWRIES ON LEATHER THONGS. The responsibility of caring for the ibeji is borne by the mother and female family members of subsequent generations. The sculpture is expected to avert evil from the household, strengthen the manifestations of family love, stare down death, illuminate the pathway through the valley of immortality, and bring good fortune to all who treat it with respect and offer it tokens of affection. Lot 778, Gelede /Yoruba / Nigeria / Santeria / Yemaya / Ifa
Gelede. The masquerade performances of ancestral spirits, provides an outlet in which men play a major role. This celebration is associated with a deified founding foremother, either earth or water along with a forefather. The Gelede honors and serves spiritually powerful women-elders, ancestors, and deities. A woman's status derives largely from her reputation in trading, her craftsmanship, and her wealth, rather than her husband's importance. Since the principal occupation of Yoruba women is trading, many Gelede masks depict marketwomen. These women are economically independent of their husbands and have the potential to earn even more money than the husband. Borrowing occurs, but with expectation that it will be paid back. Ideals such as patience and control and reverence are personified as women. The same women that are made tribute ... moreto. The mothers, who are united with all women by'the flow of blood, embody the concept of balance, a female quality that man must understand-indeed emulate- in order to survive" An elderly woman, her long years implying a secret knowledge and power may be regarded as a"witch" These elderly women and priestesses tend to be shown much affection. It is because of this special power that they have greater access to Yoruba deities. Any elderly woman, her longevity suggesting a mystical power and a secretive knowledge, is put into the same category as all those who hold important titles in cults for the gods and ancestors. Old age implies spiritual prowess taken from the end of menstruation. Thus menopause plays a role in the community that, unlike in the Western civilization, is very revered. Yoruba Necklace Metal Coil Gilded Brass Beads African SALE Was $39
Title, Yoruba Necklace Metal Coil Gilded Brass Beads African, Materials, Brass(unknown metal content) Made In, West Africa and Europe, Traded In, Africa, Approximate Age, Early 20th Century or later Overall Condition, Good. Damage/Repair, Bent and dented. Some beads darkened with age and oxidation. People, Yoruba, Necklace Length, 24 inches(includes string/raffia) Additional information: For ages. Brass and gold African beads have been made using the “lost wax method.” First a model of the object is made from beeswax, then dipped repeatedly in a solution of fine ash or charcoal powder mixed with water. This forms a mold, or “crucible,” which is allowed to dry and harden. In the case of beads with fine strings in their design, a syringe is used to produce the long, thin wax pieces which are then wrapped around charcoal ... moreto leave a hole during the heating process. As the molds harden, channels are left in them to enable the wax to drain out during the heating process which takes place in a kiln. As the wax melts and is “lost”, molten brass or gold is poured into the mold to form the bead or ornament. When the metal has cooled, the molds are broken open and cleared away and the new art object is thoroughly cleaned and shined before it is presented to the world. In some cases the final product is gilded for an especially rich finish. 72504* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! Africa Direct. Yoruba Fan Oshigo Region
This beautiful piece stands 24 inches tall by 12 inches wide and is made primarily of copper. It is in beautiful condition with excellent detail. Purchased in 1991 from Barrister's Gallery in New Orleans. LA. Some of the copper has minimal oxidation and the coins attached to the fan depict Queen Victoria and date from the 19th century. Quote from the documentation: The extraordinary fan is Yoruba from the Oshogbo region of Nigeria. It belonged to a priestess of the arisa/goddess Osun(or Oshun) that priestess.when holding the fan served as a communicator between the phenomenal world and the spiritual world. Osun is the divinity of the river of the same name that crosses the region of Oshogbo in Nigeria. Her title of Yalodde(Mother of Nations) is the highest honor that may be conferred upon a woman. She controls all that makes life worth ... moreliving. Such as love and marriage, children, money, and pleasures. Incindently, her number is five and her color is yellow-you might keep that in mind in future rituals. I do not know the item's age. It comes with metal stand.
