Marvelous works in cast in copper alloys are known in central and southern Nigeria from as early as the 7th century found at the extraordinary archaeological site at Igbo Ukwu and reaching to Ife in the 12 th century through the kingdom of Benin in the 15 th followed by a number other important bronze casting centers that bring us to the present. It is difficult to locate its origin with certainty and can belong even to a contemporary Igbo group but most likely due to size and complexity and detailing of surface design should be considered an historical object dating back hundreds of years. This is simply a superb example of the lost wax casting technique and it must be recognized that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who today continue a tradition nearly 1500 years old and have not lost

This auction is for an Oshe Shango dance wand and Ibeji pair with protective beads. Shango measures 18" by 41/2' Ibejis measures 9" by 3" The Shango is secured on a beautiful wooden base. Shango known as a powerful warrior and the fourth legendary king of the Oyo kingdom. Shango was renowned for his fiery temper, which was often compared to the thunderous roar and flashing lightning of a storm. One myth mentions that Shango’s chiefs ended his tyrannical rule by dethroning him and expelling him from the capital. After Shango hangs himself, his friends learn charm-making and acquire the power to attract lightning to take vengeance on the houses of their(and the former king’s) enemies. A second story recounts how Shango, fascinated ... morewith magical powers, inadvertently kills several of his wives and children with a thunderstorm he conjured up. His sorrow leads him to abdicate the throne and hang himself; his enemies scorn his name. Lot 118, Authentic Egba Abeokuta Ibeji Male & Female Pair, Yoruba / Santeria
Here is a fine example of an exceptionally carved Esie Igbomina Ere Ibeji Male and Female pair. Measuring approximately 10" by 4" Carved mid to late 1960's. Similar pair can be found in the Encyclopedia of Ibejis by Fausto Polo, page 130. When the carving of the Ere Ibeji is completed. The artist is given a feast and payments determined by the Orishas. Once the figure is brought to the family dwelling, it is placed on a shrine dedicated to Elegba with the hope that the Orisha or soul, which was split in two parts when the twins were born, will now again reside in the figure that represents the dead twin. The sculpted figure is treated and cared for as if it were alive. It is rubbed in sacramental oil, washed, fed, clothed, sung to and prayed to. It is kept standing during the day, and is laid down at night. Often it will be ... moredressed in the same clothing as the living twin, or be decorated in a beaded vest or shown with raised sandals, indicating possible royal connections. The responsibility of caring for the ibeji is borne by the mother and female family members of subsequent generations. The sculpture is expected to avert evil from the household, strengthen the manifestations of family love, stare down death, illuminate the pathway through the valley of immortality, and bring good fortune to all who treat it with respect and offer it tokens of affection. Conversely, bad fortune and curses may be engendered if the ibeji is ignored. Bid with confidence. No reserves! P lease see my other auctions for great deals. BACKGROUND The Yoruba people are concentrated in large urban centers. They live in southwestern Nigeria and south of Benin. Yoruba art varies remarkably according to area and the individual carver. The Ibeji statuette is a minor art form. The incidence of twin births is extraordinarily high among the Yoruba people. But so is infant mortality. If it happens, a carver must be called to make a small image, Ere Ibeji, of the dead twin of the same sex. Thus the Ibeji are Yoruba memorials to twins who have died. Twins are believed to be the children of Shango, the god of thunder and lightning. They are also thought to possess supernatural powers and share the same soul. The mother treats the image as though it were a living child, feeding it by smearing egg on its lips, washing its face, and making clothes to it. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them

Exquiste Yoruba Gelede Mask, Nigeria / Santeria
Throughout Yorubaland. Human figures are represented in a fundamentally naturalistic way, except for bulging eyes; flat, protruding, and usually parallel lips; and stylized ears. Within the basic canon of Yoruba sculpture, many local styles can be distinguished, down to the hand of the individual artist. Today, Nigeria is structured by a number of cults. The Gelede cult pays homage to the power of elderly women. During Gelede festivities. Helmet masks carved in the form of a human face are worn. On top of the head there is either an elaborate coiffure or a carved representation of a human activity. The masks of the Epa cult. Which is connected with both the ancestors and agriculture, vary enormously according to the town in which they appear. The mask proper, roughly globular, has highly stylized features that vary little; but the superstructure, ... morewhich may be four feet or more in height, is often of very great complexity. Generally, they are worn during funerals or rites of passage ceremonies and characteristically they are composed of many elements– usually a human-face helmet mask topped by an elaborate standing figure. When not worn, these masks are kept in shrines where they are honored with libations and prayers. Beautifully carved mask. Materials: wood. Measurements: 11" in height by 8" width by 12" at depth

However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; theywere awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, and their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. By the 19th century the cult of the Ere Ibeji was firmly established and continues to this day. The death of one or both twins is regarded as a great calamity for the family, one which requires immediate appeasement of the soul of the deceased child. Rare old Bena Lulua Mask with headdress. The Lulua(luluwa) people are in fact a collection of small groups whose home bordered by the larger Luba state and the related and. With whom they share a very similar culture, history, and language. Lulua masks, artifacts and figures are hard to get nowadays as their people's art vanishes with time. From my collection here is a rare, used in the village and striking old mask from the Lulua. The raffia and wicker hood from the headdress still intact. In my educated guess I estimate this mask to be 40 to 50 years old. An unrestrained and overwhelming looking mask! It measures 17 inches from north to south, not including the headdress. Stand not included. Thanks for looking!

The Yoruba peoples of Nigeria have what is probably the longest extant artistic tradition in Africa. The nation state is comprised of numerous subsections that were joined historically by the rise and collapse of the Ife(12th to 15th centuries) and Benin(13th to 19th centuries) polities. Each of the sub-kingdoms– including Oyo. Ijebu and smaller units towards the west– had their heyday, and are loosely united through language and culture, although they still retain a measure of independence in terms of their ... moreartistic traditions. The Yoruba are sedentary. Agriculturist and hierarchical, and are ruled by hereditary kings known as Obas. Access to the supernatural world is supervised by a very complex arrangement of priests and spiritual intermediaries, who straddle the cosmological border between the tangible realm of the living(aye) and the invisible realm of the spirits and the hereafter(orun) The creator of the world is Olodumare– the source of all ase(life force) and his spiritual minions include all manner of spirits, gods and ancestors who can be appealed to or appeased through human intermediaries. Most Yoruban artistic heritage is designed to thwart evil spirits, and to placate or honour those that bring good fortune to the populace. Without contextual information. Lot 66, Superb Shango / Chango Altar / Shrine Figure, Yoruba, Nigeria / Santeria
Shango known as a powerful warrior and the fourth legendary king of the Oyo kingdom. Shango was renowned for his fiery temper, which was often compared to the thunderous roar and flashing lightning of a storm. The many myths surrounding Shango emphasize his impulsive use of power and his ability to destroy. One myth mentions that Shango’s chiefs ended his tyrannical rule by dethroning him and expelling him from the capital. After Shango hangs himself, his friends learn charm-making and acquire the power to attract lightning to take vengeance on the houses of their(and the former king’s) enemies. A second story recounts how Shango, fascinated with magical powers, inadvertently kills several of his wives and children with a thunderstorm he conjured up. His sorrow leads him to abdicate the throne and hang himself; his enemies scorn his name. ... moreWhen thunderstorms destroy much of the capital, Shango’s followers say it is the former king himself punishing the slanderers. Damage/Repair, some oxidation. Broken crown decoration, damage with large crack in the back of head, crack at the edge of crown, cracks and holes in neck, holes ... morein places, Additional Information: This casting head of King Oni is a fine example of one of the most famous metalworking traditions in world history. The present head is a 20th Century copy modeled after the great Yoruba center at Ife dating originally approximately 1100-1450 A.D. The famous archaeological site at Ife in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and bronze heads cast in bronze including the original of this late replica that was also cast in Nigeria. Ife is considered to be the center and origin of the Yoruba people. This bronze cast head is of an Oni. The ruler at Ife, who still hold sway over the Yoruba at Ife today. That this is a replica cannot be doubted, but what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this vessel continue a tradition nearly 1000 years old and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. The scarification is thought to be an indicator of royals at Ife and the large device protruding from the top of the crown was thought to be made of magical plants. see close similar examples in: Nigeria Art.
