Tribal Yoruba divination statue for maternity ceremonies ethnographic art
This powerful Yoruba divination statue and container was used for ceremonies relating to maternity. This piece appears to be fairly new and is a beautiful color of soft black. Divination cups and bowls are found all over Yoruba land often decorated with faces or animals. The bowl is dedicated to Ife. The contents are most frequently saw dust. Cowrie shells, and palm nuts with which the diviner evokes spirits to assist in the ceremony and it's success. Sixteen palm nuts are also used for this purpose. Measurements are 18" tall by 10+" wide. Wonderful interesting carving patterns. A very lovely piece!
African tribal beadwork YORUBA IFA divination, ethnographic art, Nigeria rare
A syncopated pattern of colored beads make up the design of this neck piece. The carved borders of some divination trays represent this type of necklace. The beaded necklace forms the encircling border for divination. thus the center of the crowned head of the tray is where the diviner's head(when seen from above) would be when wearing the necklace. His spiritual head is at the point of the intersection of realms. Prepared to transmit messages from beyond to those in this world. This piece is in excellent condition and is approximately 50 years old. The bags on each end are home spun fabric with beads. The length is 29" and the width of the bags is 5" at the widest point. A powerful true collectors treasure.

Lot 65, Old Shango / Chango Altar / Shrine Figure, Yoruba, Nigeria / Santeria
Shango known as a powerful warrior and the fourth legendary king of the Oyo kingdom. Shango was renowned for his fiery temper, which was often compared to the thunderous roar and flashing lightning of a storm. The many myths surrounding Shango emphasize his impulsive use of power and his ability to destroy. One myth mentions that Shango’s chiefs ended his tyrannical rule by dethroning him and expelling him from the capital. After Shango hangs himself, his friends learn charm-making and acquire the power to attract lightning to take vengeance on the houses of their(and the former king’s) enemies. A second story recounts how Shango, fascinated with magical powers, inadvertently kills several of his wives and children with a thunderstorm he conjured up. His sorrow leads him to abdicate the throne and hang himself; his enemies scorn his name. ... moreWhen thunderstorms destroy much of the capital, Shango’s followers say it is the former king himself punishing the slanderers.
Lot 116, Ibeji Male & Female Pair with Multi Color Beads, Yoruba / Santeria
Here is a fine example of an exceptionally carved Ere Ibeji Male& Female pair from Nigeria. Measuring approximately 10" by 4" Carved mid to late 1990's. Adorned with muti color beads, brass rings and covered with blue indigo powder(protective powder) When the carving of the Ere Ibeji is completed. The artist is given a feast and payment as determined by the Orishas. Once the figure is brought to the family dwelling, it is placed on a shrine dedicated to Elegba with the hope that the Orisha or soul, which was split in two parts when the twins were born, will now again reside in the figure that represents the dead twin. The sculpted figure is treated and cared for as if it were alive. It is rubbed in sacramental oil, washed, fed, clothed, sung to and prayed to. It is kept standing during the day, and is laid down at night. ... moreOften it will be dressed in the same clothing as the living twin, or be decorated in a beaded vest or shown with raised sandals, indicating possible royal connections. The responsibility of caring for the ibeji is borne by the mother and female family members of subsequent generations. The sculpture is expected to avert evil from the household, strengthen the manifestations of family love, stare down death, illuminate the pathway through the valley of immortality, and bring good fortune to all who treat it with respect and offer it tokens of affection. Conversely, bad fortune and curses may be engendered if the ibeji is ignored. Bid with confidence. No reserves! P lease see my other auctions for great deals.

Both major deities in the Yoruba pantheon. Offerings would be made to her leading to the bowl held by the figure. The mother and child could have had a more public role appearing during festivals and religious ceremonies as Lawal(1996) reports similar figures being carried in a large bowl by a priestess who dances in a trance to celebrate the river goddess Yemoja who has the power to bestow children upon her devotees. Yoruba Olumeye offering bowl, African Tribal Creations maternity pot Nigeria art
An African Tribal Creations gallery Yoruba Olumeye Hospitality Offering Bowl For a great many in the African art collecting community. This culture need no introduction. The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa, and are renowned for their copious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history ... moreof human sacrifice. Born exclusively from the desire to be hospitable. And fulfilling a secular and utilitarian function, the Olumeye bowl is a common artform that would be found in many a Yoruba home, used to store kola nuts for the enjoyment of visitors. The word'Olumeye' can be roughly translated to mean'one who knows honor/respect' and is commonly associated with the depiction of these figures in the kneeling position. Appearing in many forms, this particular piece takes on the form of a maternity theme, with a woman in the olumeye(kneeling) position with her infant child held in her hands before her. On the lid of the bowl is another standing figure depicted in the act of sacrificing a bird. This bowl is moderately large in stature, dense and heavy, and is beautifully pigmented across most of its surface. Though some of its color has faded with age, it is largely intact, and is a truly exceptional example of the artform. The figure and bowl are very elegantly carved, with plenty of fine detail, and the top fits nicely onto the bowl, a sign of good original craftsmanship. Upon the woman figure's back a small child has been carved, being carried in a clot

The cowrie shells attached along the edges were a form of currency in the past and would also be used during Ifa divination and the color white is ritually significant among the Yoruba. The Yoruba of Nigeria and of the Benin Republic are known for having an extraordinarily high rate of multiple births. In earlier times. New-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; they were awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, and their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. By the 19th century the cult of the Ere Ibeji was firmly established and continues to this day. The death of one or both twins is regarded as a great calamity for the family, one which requires immediate appeasement of the soul of the deceased child. Though the cause of the high rate of twin births among Yoruba women has not been established. The cultural grieving process is well documented and may be observed in the carving of a figure known as Ere

Yoruba carvings shown nursing or carrying children represent much more that just fertility according to Henry Drewal. These Yoruba maternity figures represent the long weaning period(approximately two years) A time of sexual abstinence and suppressed menstruation. which is seen as a state of purity or ritual cleanliness. Further, according to Drewal, pregnant and nursing women achieve a state related to that of elder women, who are past menopause and therefore free of the pollution of menses. Thus mother and child images denote a state of natural purity; for during the long nursing period. when the child is carried on the back, a woman's menstruation is suppressed and she practices sexual ... moreabstinence. The figures communicate sexual abstinence, inner cleanliness, ritual purity, female forces and spirituality. Some Yoruba figures are shown kneeling. Which represents a position of respect, devotion and sometimes even submission to the gods. Most women portrayed in Yoruba sculpture represent royal wives or worshipers, not gods. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! The few to be found west of Sudan. From the lands of the Sahara and Sahel down to the fringes of the tropical forests, belong to the king, the chief warrior and to notable persons. Due to the dense humidity of the tropical rainforest and the deadly tsetse fly, only restricted numbers of horses survive. And yet rider and mount sculptures are common among the Dogon, Djenne, Bamana, Senufo and the Yoruba people. The Akan-Asante people of Ghana and the Kotoko of Chad produced a good deal of small casting brass and bronze sculptures. Some of the artists could barely even have caught a glimpse of a horse. Proverbs help understand the symbolism of these details: According to Moyo O.2004) The ... moreeyes are the security lamps of the head, as stated in the Yoruba proverb, Ojú lálà kan fi I só ori-the crab watches its head with its eyes. The eyes are also the drivers-Ojú latókùn ara, bójú bà fó, ókúnkún lò kú, meaning, the eyes are the body conductors, and if the eyes are blind, everything turns darkness" The right to wear crowns is limited to approximately fifty Yoruba kings. Theoretically. Only direct descendants of one of the sixteen children of the god ORISHA, first king of the Yoruba people, can wear them. African tribal bronze sculpture ethnographic art Yoruba Ife Nigeria authentic
According to the YORUBA peoples myth of the origin of IFE it was the place where the Gods descended from the skies to populate the world. According to tradition when the first OBA(Benin King) died his head was sent to IFE for burial with IFE sending back a bronze head for the ancestors altar. Impressed by this creation Benin royalty beseech-ed the IFE king to send an artist who could teach the art of bronze work to Benin craftsmen. This began the tradition of Benin bronze work. This head measures 11" high by 7" deep and 5.5" wide. The exact age is unknown but thought to be early 20th century. This statue is of Obalufon a very early ruler. An Oni the ruler at Ife. He was said to have introduced bronze casting to Ife. Dots on his face(holes) were thought to be where animal skins were tied on to represent a beard. REAL OLD YORUBA PEOPLE GELEDE PAINTED HEADDRESS - AMAZING DETAILS FROM NIGERIA
You are bidding on a Rare and Old YORUBA PEOPLE Painted Gelede wood Headdress. Decorated with a cowrie shell necklace and animal hair, from Nigeria. The arts of the Yoruba are as numerous as their deities. And many objects are placed on shrines to honor the gods and the ancestors. Beautiful sculpture abounds in wood and brass and the occasional terracotta. Varied masking traditions have resulted in a great diversity of mask forms. Additional important arts include pottery, weaving, beadworking and metalsmithing. The Yoruba claim that they have 401 deities; in truth. There are more than these. The complexity of their cosmology has led Western scholars to compare them to the Ancient Greeks and their impressive pantheon. Yoruba deities are known as orisha, and the high god is Olorun. No organized priesthoods or shrines exist in honor of Olorun, ... morebut his spirit is invoked to ask for blessings and to confer thanks. The Yoruba believe that when they die they enter the realm of the ancestors where they still have influence on earth. Annual homage is paid to the grave sites of ones' forbears, and lineage heads are responsible for honoring all deceased members of the lineage through a yearly sacrifice. Maskers(egungun) appear at funerals and are believed to embody the spirit of the deceased person. Other important orishas include Eshu, the trickster; Shango, the god of thunder; and Ogun, the god of iron and modern technology. The Yoruba people reside mainly in Nigeria but are spread across to Benin. Lush forest and Savannah areas surround them. Their origins can be researched back to the end of the first millennium. Yoruba communal functioning is structured around their religious concepts and their related ritualistic societies. Yoruba spiritual devotion is so complete and powerful. That all of their important artworks are dedicated to religious ceremony in one way or another. There are three main Yoruba societies or"egbe" one being the Gelede society. This sect is devoted to Yemoja, the mother of all orisha(

Nigeria: Large Tribal used Old Yoruba Gelede headmask.
Nigeria: Large Tribal used Old Yoruba Gelede headmask. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. Height: 44 cm. The Yoruba people. Numbering over 12 million, are the largest nation in Africa with an art-producing tradition. Most of them live in southwest Nigeria, with considerable communities further west in the Republic of Benin and in Togo. They are divided into approximately twenty separate subgroups, which were traditionally autonomous kingdoms. Excavation at Ife of life-sized bronze and terracotta heads and full-length figures of royalty and their attendants have startled the world, surpassing in their portrait-like naturalism everything previously known from Africa. The cultural and artistic roots of the Ife masters of the Classical Period(ca. 1050—1500) lie in the more ancient cultural center of Nok to the northeast, though the precise ... morenature of this link remains obscure.

Rare Antique One of a Kind Yoruba Pair of Ibeji Twin Figures With Cowried Jacket
Title Yoruba Pair of Ibeji Twin Figures With old Jacket sNigeria African Type of Object Carving Country of Origin Nigeria People Yoruba Materials Wood. raffia fibers, cowrie shells, cotton cloth, pigment Approximate Age first half 20th century Dimensions figures: A Yoruba pair of twin figurs wearing a jacket made out of cotton cloth decorated with cowrie shells. The Yoruba of Nigeria and of the Benin Republic are known for having an extraordinarily high rate of multiple births. In earlier times, new-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; they were awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, ... moreand their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. By the 19th century the cult of the Ere Ibeji was firmly established and continues to this day. The death of one or both twins is regarded as a great calamity for the family, one which requires immediate appeasement of the soul of the deceased child. Though the cause of the high rate of twin births among Yoruba women has not been established, the cultural grieving process is well documented and may be observed in the carving of a figure known as Ere Ibeji, which both represents the lost child and serves as a ritual point of contact with the soul of the deceased. The carving of the Ere Ibeji is commissioned under the guidance of an Ifa diviner, a Babalowo, whom the parents consult in selecting the particular artist who will do the work. The sculpture itself represents a deceased infant, but is carved with features and attributes of an adult. The sculptural features of genitalia, pubic hair, wide hips, developed breasts, gender specific facial scarification and mature coiffures exude an erotic sexuality, uncommon for infants. As Dr. Moyo Okediji notes, the completed ibeji figure is carved as an adult, rather
Yoruba African Basket exquisitely beaded and patterned , Old and Previously Used
This African basket was made by a member of the Yoruba Tribe. It is old but in very good condition. It has some uniform darkening consistent with wear from use. The variations in color in the photos are due to the use or non use of the flash on the camera. This piece stands approximately 10.5 inches tall and 8 inches in diameter. The colored glass beads are used in the three designs. The basket is lined with cowry shells on both the lip and base. A few are missing. The Yoruba people live in Southwest Nigeria and Benin. They have developed a variety of different artistic forms including pottery. Weaving, beadwork, metalwork, and mask making. Most artwork is made to honor the gods and ancestors and since there are more then 401 known gods to the Yoruba there is much sculpture and artwork made. Because of the vastness in the number of gods, ... morethe Yoruba have been compared to the ancient Greeks in the amount of gods and in the similarities between the structures of the gods. The Yoruba have started to become quite popular among Africans all over the world who claim the Yoruba as their family roots and follow the religion and culture of the Yoruba. Many claim that they are part of the Diaspora of the Yoruba as slaves. I have many additional indigenous and other items listed for sale on Ebay. Please take a look! The Bennett-Luther Collection Africa Direct, Denver, Colorado, 2004, fig. 45, p. 57 Additional Information: This interestingly carved and brightly colored Egunguin head crest is an intriguing variation of the Egungun genre. The prominent central crest has four figures facing inwards with their arms upraised and hands touching the crest in a gesture of acknowledgement and praise. The figures are brightly painted matching the red cloth cover for the dancer's face. The shape of the crest mirrors the hair style of the devotees or priests of Yoruba Orishas. The deities Eshu and Shango. The long use of this mask can be seen in the indigo coloring matter collected on the surface filling in details of the coiffure and imparting a dark blue timber to the crest. The red cloth covering the face was part of a large costume of different colored cloths completely covering the dancer's body and thereby emphasizing the mystery and awe so integral to to the appearance of Egungun and the spirits of the ancestors" Daniel Mato, PhD.
