Few African artisans achieved as highly as the people of the now extinct Benin kingdom. The Benin people were denizens of Nigeria, and they brought the art of bronze(actually mostly brass) casting to a height that has likely not yet been exceeded on the continent of Africa. Upon the arrival of European missionaries and invaders, the discovery of Benin art led them to the belief that this art was stolen from the Jews or Egyptians, and could not have been produced by these people who were at that point considered subhuman. Extraordinary masks and figures had been produced using the simple lost-wax casting method, in addition to the now famous life-sized brass leopard figures, exclusively associated with the oba. YORUBA SHANGO DANCE WAND NIGERIA #2345 ~ For African Art Gallery
YORUBA SHANGO DANCE WAND#2345 Tribe: Yoruba. Country: Nigeria. Material: Wood. Size: 14" 35.6 cm) Tall. Item: 2345. Condition: Good. The Y-shaped Shango staff forms. Sculpted in relief, are used in special festivals and processions, followers of Shango, the Yoruba god of thunder, carry dance wands, called oshe shango, depicting a female devotee with Shango's symbol, the double-headed axe. Shango is thought to control the great powers of nature as one of the orisha, or gods. Shango. Who controls thunder, is associated with the expansion of the Oyo empire in western Yorubaland. The historical personage Shango was a descendant of Oranmiyan and the tyrannical fourth king of Oyo. Oral traditions maintain that he was despot, coerced into surrendering his crown and committing suicide. His supporters denied his death and declared that he ... morehad become a god, merged with the forces of thunder and lightning, which they call down on their enemies. The Shango legend illustrates a significant aspect of Yoruba orisha: they are not idealized. Shango was a sacred king but he can still be presented as a remorseless despot whose need for control overstepped the boundries suitable to political authority. In his attempt to control mystical and magical powers. He was unable to master them, and was eventually controlled by them. Once a mortal, Shango did not die, but he commands great powers of nature as an orisha. In dreadful storms he hurls flashes of lightning upon those who do not respect him. These thunderbolts take the form of ancient stone axes that are exposed on the surface of the earth after heavy rains. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Tribal Yoruba divination board, agere and tapper set used ethnographic art
Among the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria divination objects were(are) used to communicate with gods. Spirits and ancestors to understand or influence one's fate. The divination tray is referred to as opon Ifa on which the sacred signs, Odu, were traced. Bowl or agere Ifa contained the sixteen palm nuts to be cast. Beaded bags were carried with tools and supplies inside and tappers called Iroke were tapped to summon and greet the spirits of Orunmila and Eshu. The quality of the pieces enhanced the diviner's status and inspired confidence in their skill. Ifa or divination is practiced to explain misfortunes and help to prevent them. The diviner in consulting a deity, manipulates the sixteen palm nuts, reads the pattern they form and marks the results on the divination board, Opon Ifa, which is sprinkled with a special wood dust. The marks ... moreindicate versus that should be chanted as prayers. It is unusual to find a complete set such as this. All of the pieces are in very good condition showing years of use. The bowl or agere Ifa has been repaired as shown in the last photo. This is an exceptional trio and most worthy of any serious collection. The next to last photo shows a carved out square that holds medicine during ceremonies. The board measures 14" by 7.5" the tapper 14" in length and the bowl or agere 9.5" tall and 7" at the widest point.
Yoruba Ajere Ifa West African Palm Nut Divination Bowl Orisa Orunmila Ifa Sango
This is a striking and very meaningful hand carved traditional Ajere Ifa from Ogun State in Yorubaland. Nigeria, used by the Babalawo priests of Ifa to hold their divination palm nuts. The ikin Ifa, when not in use. Completely hand carved in Yoruba land, it is of solid wood and very heavy. The lid has two heads on either side of the top knob, which pay homage to ones"ori" one's higher self which guides us in life and if made offering to and heeded, will lead us to all the good things of life. Their depiction represents that our ori, our higher self should always be on the look out for us, protecting and guiding us from harm's way. The kneeling male figure. Most probably representing Sango, holds firmly in each hand the guardian serpents of Ifa which form a V shape where the tails meet in back, then arch over each shoulder. ... moreThese snakes are the fierce protectors of the tradition. The figure's clothing is cross hatched and could possibly be a tunic with skirt, such as worn by Sango who is the divinity orisa of justice and himself a fierce protector of those who supplicate him. On his cheeks are the diamond patterned tribal scarification marks typical of the old Yoruba in the older line of Bashorun in Oyo land, Sango's traditional kingdom. The 5 notched carvings around the rim represent"afoxe" ah-foh-shay) The spoken word of"Ase" pronounced ah-shay(divine power) in action, and are a reminder and type of charm to make sure that the priest or supplicant's prayers and commands come to pass when they cast the ikin or pray with them in their hands. This is a very traditional piece and was carved for use by the Babalawo priesthood. This is a used item. As is the opon Ifa, and the best recollection is that it was carved in the mid to late 80's by a woodcarver in Ogun State who I personally met. The wood is not black ebony but has been stained black and oiled to prevent cracking, which so many of these pieces do as the years go by in hot Nigeria. if not cared for properl

Yoruba Ibeji Twin Figures, African Tribal Creations, art Yorba mask Nigeria wood
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa. And are renowned for their copious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history of human sacrifice. The Yoruba culture is subdivided into a number of cults. Each identified by particular thing ... moreit holds sacred. These figures adhere to the sculptural tradition of the Ibeji cult, with Ibeji meaning'twins' as the Yoruba hold twins to be sacred, and remarkably, as a people, have one of the highest incidences of twin births in the world. It is believed that twins are a single soul harbored within two bodies, and whatever ill befalls one twin, befalls the spirit of both. In the event that one twin dies, a frequent occurrence due to the high infant mortality rate in much of Africa, the soul(or half of the soul) residing within the other twin will be considered out of balance, causing life difficulties, etc. The parents of this surviving twin would have a figure commissioned by a local diviner, which would then be treated as would the surviving twin, and would be believed to become a vessel for the other half of the soul. In this way, the soul could remain balanced for the surviving individual. In the event that both twins were to die, a commemorative set of figures would be commissioned. The figures are, stylistically, produced similarly to other figures in Yoruba culture, but the young are generally depicted as adults, in the artist's interpretation of features po
Fine African Art Congo Hemba Tribal Mask Masque dogon yoruba songye senofu lobi
Old and fine wood African Hemba mask. Carved in very hard and heavy wood, good volume) and with a very nice encrusted sacrificial patina. Mid 20th Century. I love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey ... moremask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful. The personification of this being depicts the potential of nature and the need to control its excesses through the dancing of the men’s society Ibombo ya Soho masks. These masks are not very large and upon occasions are worn at dancer’s waists or kept in the house to protect the household from malevolent forces. The Hemba monkey mask reflects the ability of the African artist to characterize the idea of life and death in brooding sculptural form. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. Height: 33 cm. 13 in. Stand not included Read Before Bidding I am not a shop dealer. EARLY 20th CENTURY YORUBA PEOPLE IFE TERRACOTA HEAD - FROM NIGERIA 01
You are bidding on a Rare and Old Early 20th Century YORUBA PEOPLE IFE Terracota Statue of a Figure's Head. With amazing design details. From Nigeria. PLEASE NOTE that when I bought these pieces it was represented that they were"19th Century or earlier" They really look old but I can say that they are at least early 20th Century. The arts of the Yoruba are as numerous as their deities. And many objects are placed on shrines to honor the gods and the ancestors. Beautiful sculpture abounds in wood and brass and the occasional terracotta. Varied masking traditions have resulted in a great diversity of mask forms. Additional important arts include pottery, weaving, beadworking and metalsmithing. The Yoruba claim that they have 401 deities; in truth. There are more than these. The complexity of their cosmology has led Western scholars ... moreto compare them to the Ancient Greeks and their impressive pantheon. Yoruba deities are known as orisha, and the high god is Olorun. No organized priesthoods or shrines exist in honor of Olorun, but his spirit is invoked to ask for blessings and to confer thanks. The Yoruba believe that when they die they enter the realm of the ancestors where they still have influence on earth. Annual homage is paid to the grave sites of ones' forbears, and lineage heads are responsible for honoring all deceased members of the lineage through a yearly sacrifice. Maskers(egungun) appear at funerals and are believed to embody the spirit of the deceased person. Other important orishas include Eshu, the trickster; Shango, the god of thunder; and Ogun, the god of iron and modern technology. The Yoruba people reside mainly in Nigeria but are spread across to Benin. Lush forest and Savannah areas surround them. Their origins can be researched back to the end of the first millennium. Yoruba communal functioning is structured around their religious concepts and their related ritualistic societies. Yoruba spiritual devotion is so complete and powerful. That all of their important artworks are de

YORUBA SHANGO DANCE WAND NIGERIA #2230 ~ For African Art Gallery
YORUBA SHANGO DANCE WAND#2230 Tribe: Yoruba. Country: Nigeria. Material: Wood. Pigment. Size: 15.5" 39.4 cm) Tall. Item: 2230. Condition: Good considering age and use. Some chips and damage, see images. Oral traditions maintain that he was despot, coerced into surrendering his crown and committing ... moresuicide. His supporters denied his death and declared that he had become a god, merged with the forces of thunder and lightning, which they call down on their enemies. Arts of Africa - Yoruba Ibeji Twins - Nigeria (Pair)
When the carving of the Ere Ibeji is completed. The artist is given a feast and payment as determined by the Orishas. Once the figure is brought to the family dwelling, it is placed on a shrine dedicated to Elegba with the hope that the Orisha or soul, which was split in two parts when the twins were born, will now again reside in the figure that represents the dead twin. The sculpted figure is treated and cared for as if it were alive. It is rubbed in sacramental oil, washed, fed, clothed, sung to and prayed to. It is kept standing during the day, and is laid down at night. Often it will be dressed in the same clothing as the living twin, or be decorated in a beaded vest or shown with raised sandals, indicating possible royal connections. The responsibility of caring for the ibeji is borne by the mother and female family members of subsequent ... moregenerations. The sculpture is expected to avert evil from the household, strengthen the manifestations of family love, stare down death, illuminate the pathway through the valley of immortality, and bring good fortune to all who treat it with respect and offer it tokens of affection. Since the seventeenth century, Yoruba-speaking peoples have been organized in a series of kingdoms. Much Yoruba art is made in association with deities known as orisha, each associated with particular iconography. The subject sculpture displays native repairs to the base, back, and sides of face. BEAUTIFUL OLD YORUBA PEOPLE STATUE OF FEMALE FIGURE HOLDING URN- FROM NIGERIA
You are bidding on a Rare and Old YORUBA PEOPLE wood statue of a Kneeling Female Figure Holding an Urn. With amazing carving details, from Nigeria. The complexity of their cosmology has led Western scholars to compare them to the Ancient Greeks and their impressive pantheon. Yoruba deities are known as orisha, and the high god is Olorun. No organized priesthoods or shrines exist in honor of Olorun, ... morebut his spirit is invoked to ask for blessings and to confer thanks. That all of their important artworks are dedicated to religious ceremony in one way or another. There are three main Yoruba societies or"egbe" one being the Gelede society. This sect is devoted to Yemoja, the mother of all orisha(a

Exquiste Yoruba Mask, Nigeria / Santeria
Throughout Yorubaland. Human figures are represented in a fundamentally naturalistic way, except for bulging eyes; flat, protruding, and usually parallel lips; and stylized ears. Within the basic canon of Yoruba sculpture, many local styles can be distinguished, down to the hand of the individual artist. Today, Nigeria is structured by a number of cults. The Gelede cult pays homage to the power of elderly women. During Gelede festivities. Helmet masks carved in the form of a human face are worn. On top of the head there is either an elaborate coiffure or a carved representation of a human activity. The masks of the Epa cult. Which is connected with both the ancestors and agriculture, vary enormously according to the town in which they appear. The mask proper, roughly globular, has highly stylized features that vary little; but the superstructure, ... morewhich may be four feet or more in height, is often of very great complexity. Generally, they are worn during funerals or rites of passage ceremonies and characteristically they are composed of many elements– usually a human-face helmet mask topped by an elaborate standing figure. When not worn, these masks are kept in shrines where they are honored with libations and prayers. Beautifully carved mask. Materials: wood. Measurements: 11" in height by 8" width by 12" at depth
Lot 21, Ere Ibeji Female Twins with Protective Green Beads, Yoruba/Santeria/Ifa
Here is a fine example of Ere Ibeji Female Twins with red protective beadsNigeria. Measuring 9" by 3" When the carving of the Ere Ibeji is completed. Often it will be dressed in the same clothing as the living twin, or be decorated in a beaded vest or shown with raised sandals, indicating possible royal connections. ... moreThe responsibility of caring for the ibeji is borne by the mother and female family members of subsequent generations. The sculpture is expected to avert evil from the household, strengthen the manifestations of family love, stare down death, illuminate the pathway through the valley of immortality, and bring good fortune to all who treat it with respect and offer it tokens of affection. Conversely, bad fortune and curses may be engendered if the ibeji is ignored. PLEASE NOTE: PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 4 DAYS OF PURCHASE. BECAUSE OF RECENT PROBLEMS WITH PAYMENTS NOT RECEIVED. Lot 91, Shango / Chango Altar / Shrine Figure, Yoruba, Nigeria / Santeria
Shango known as a powerful warrior and the fourth legendary king of the Oyo kingdom. Shango was renowned for his fiery temper, which was often compared to the thunderous roar and flashing lightning of a storm. The many myths surrounding Shango emphasize his impulsive use of power and his ability to destroy. One myth mentions that Shango’s chiefs ended his tyrannical rule by dethroning him and expelling him from the capital. After Shango hangs himself, his friends learn charm-making and acquire the power to attract lightning to take vengeance on the houses of their(and the former king’s) enemies. A second story recounts how Shango, fascinated with magical powers, inadvertently kills several of his wives and children with a thunderstorm he conjured up. His sorrow leads him to abdicate the throne and hang himself; his enemies scorn his name. ... moreWhen thunderstorms destroy much of the capital, Shango’s followers say it is the former king himself punishing the slanderers.
