Yoruba Brass Bells and White Beads African
Title, Yoruba Brass Bells and White Beads African, Type of Object, brass bells(unknown metal content) and plastic beads. Cotton strand, People, Yoruba, Made In, Nigeria, Approximate Age, Mid to late 20th century, Overall Condition, Fair to good.  Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, some dented bells; several shades of metal bells, Strand Length, 24 inches(including string/raffia) Additional information: For ages. Brass and gold African beads ... morehave been made using the “lost wax method.” First a model of the object is made from beeswax, then dipped repeatedly in a solution of fine ash or charcoal powder mixed with water. This forms a mold, or “crucible,” which is allowed to dry and harden. In the case of beads with fine strings in their design, a syringe is used to produce the long, thin wax pieces which are then wrapped around charcoal to leave a hole during the heating process. As the molds harden, channels are left in them to enable the wax to drain out during the heating process which takes place in a kiln. As the wax melts and is “lost”, molten brass or gold is poured into the mold to form the bead or ornament. When the metal has cooled, the molds are broken open and cleared away and the new art object is thoroughly cleaned and shined before it is presented to the world. In some cases the final product is gilded for an especially rich finish. For more information. Please see our comprehensive guide to African-made beads, African Beads: Jewels of a Continent. From the splendid facial expression, to the detailed rendering of its formal crown. One can only imagine the true splendor of the old court of Ife. The present head is a 20th Century copy modeled after the great Yoruba center at Ife dating originally approximately 1100-1450 A.D. The famous archaeological site at Ife in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and bronze heads cast in bronze including the original of this late replica that was also cast in Nigeria. Ife is considered to be the center and origin of the Yoruba people. This bronze cast head is of an Oni. The ruler at Ife, who still hold sway over the Yoruba at Ife today. That this is a replica cannot be doubted, but what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this vessel continue a tradition nearly 1000 years old and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. The scarification is thought to be an indicator of royals at Ife and the large device protruding from the top of the crown was thought to be made of magical plants. see close similar examples in: Nigeria Art. Item Number: 2441 Yoruba Ere Ibeji Figure Tribe: Yoruba Country: Nigeria Material: Wood. Pigment. Size: 12" 30.5 cm) Tall. Condition: Good condition. Ibeji is a Yoruba term meaning twins. There is a common belief in Yoruba religion that both twins share one soul. So if one twin dies at a young age, the balance of the soul is thrown off or disturbed. The death rate of children is very high in Africa, and on account of this, a ritual is carried out to put the twins' soul back into balance. The Ifá priest chooses a well-established carver to create a small figure that symbolizes the dead child. The carver is free to create a figure of the twin in his own image of what he felt about the twin. If both twins die. Then two figures are made. The soul is then spiritually transported into the figures. These figures are called ere ibeji. ... moreIbi means born, eji means two, and ere means sacred image. The figure remains as respected and as powerful as the person it represents. The children's parents must treat the statue as if it were real. So it is bathed, fed, and clothed just as it would be in life. The figure is particularly special to the mother, who keeps the figure close to her bed. She rubs the figure with red wood powder to maintain the look of slickness, and she caresses the figure in a loving manner. YORUBA OSHE SANGO WAND #2449 - Nigeria - For African Art Gallery
Item Number: 2449 Yoruba Oshe Sango Staff Tribe: Yoruba Country: Nigeria Material: Wood. Pigment. Size: 17" 43.2 cm) Tall Condition: Good. Considering age. The Yoruba Shango staff forms. Sculpted in relief, are used in special festivals and processions, followers of Shango, the Yoruba god of thunder, carry dance wands, called ake& oshe shango, depicting a female devotee with Shango's symbol. The single or double-headed axe. The ax, both single- and double-headed, is the constant companion of this warrior orisa. The single-headed ax, known as Ake Sango, is more rare than the double-headed ax, or Oshe Sango, that he is normally seen carrying. Shango is thought to control the great powers of nature as one of the orisha. Or gods. Shango. Who controls thunder, is associated with the expansion of the Oyo empire in western Yorubaland. ... moreThe historical personage Shango was a descendant of Oranmiyan and the tyrannical fourth king of Oyo. Oral traditions maintain that he was despot, coerced into surrendering his crown and committing suicide. His supporters denied his death and declared that he had become a god, merged with the forces of thunder and lightning, which they call down on their enemies. The Shango legend illustrates a significant aspect of Yoruba orisha: they are not idealized. Shango was a sacred king but he can still be presented as a remorseless despot whose need for control overstepped the boundries suitable to political authority. In his attempt to control mystical and magical powers. He was unable to master them, and was eventually controlled by them. Once a mortal, Shango did not die, but he commands great powers of nature as an orisha. In dreadful storms he hurls flashes of lightning upon those who do not respect him. These thunderbolts take the form of ancient stone axes that are exposed on the surface of the earth after heavy rains. Customer Service: 561-745-1905

SPECTACULAR ANTIQUE YORUBA (NIGERIA) ADIRE MADE INTO A WRAP-AROUND SKIRT
Here is a real prize. This beautiful wrap-around skirt is made of a spectacular and rare piece of antique and genuine Nigerian adire cloth. The skirt was made by Aladire of Lagos(Nigeria) A famed designer of traditional materials. The adire is of an unfamiliar design; it consists of four patterned squares, one is named“wire” another is the one called“eggs” a third is similar to the“sahada” pattern, and the fourth, which is the most interesting, is one I have never seen before. The last one resembles a series of flowers or leaves and is a very striking pattern. The cloth is the adire eleko type, manufactured by hand-painting the design on the basic cotton cloth using chicken feathers and a cassava-flour paste-this provides the starch-resist as the cloth enters the indigo dying vats. The skirt is fully lined. A necessity with real adire, as ... morethe indigo dye is not color fast. The waist is about 41 inches, with ties at each end. There is also an opening in the waistband, like a large button hole, where the tie is threaded through to hold things together. From waistband to bottom hem is about 42 inches, and the bottom of the skirt is about 85 inches long. In the 1920s and 30s adire was a major local craft in the towns of Abeokuta and Ibadan. Attracting buyers from all over West Africa. The more complex and beautiful starch resist designs continued to be produced until the early 1970s. Handmade adire is seldom made any more, having been replaced by cheap, brightly colored printed cloth, mostly from the Netherlands; and old adire like this is very rare today, found mostly in museums and the collections of private connoiseurs. Adire was originally made for everyday wear and was discarded when it wore out, so old adire is not common. This adire was collected in about 1973, when we lived in Lagos; it was made for my late wife, but has never been used. A stylish woman with a taste for the exotic and rare would make a fashion statement with this skirt-or a collector of rare and exotic fabrics would be able to appr

Also known as Elegba. Eshu is the deity of the crossroads, one who confuses us or directs us to avoid dangers. He is the Yoruba deity who carries messages and offerings to the gods and is best known as the trickster god of their pantheon. Elegba(Eshu) is known through a number of symbolic motifs-however the long hunter’s braid reflects the power and potency that Yoruba ascribe to long hair. 87431* All content.
