The figure depicts a kneeling female carrying a child in her the back and a bowl in her hands She is wearing a carved necklace and an elaborate hairstyle. This is a classic figure used as a shrine piece by the Yoruba. The object has a substantial age and shows much handling. It would hold a prominent place in a collection. This strongly carved female figure with a child and bowls could be considered a classically traditional representation of a religious devotee found on many shrines among the Yoruba of central and southern Nigeria. Brass and gold African beads ... morehave been made using the âlost wax method.â First a model of the object is made from beeswax, then dipped repeatedly in a solution of fine ash or charcoal powder mixed with water. This forms a mold, or âcrucible,â which is allowed to dry and harden. In the case of beads with fine strings in their design, a syringe is used to produce the long, thin wax pieces which are then wrapped around charcoal to leave a hole during the heating process. As the molds harden, channels are left in them to enable the wax to drain out during the heating process which takes place in a kiln. As the wax melts and is âlostâ, molten brass or gold is poured into the mold to form the bead or ornament. When the metal has cooled, the molds are broken open and cleared away and the new art object is thoroughly cleaned and shined before it is presented to the world. From the splendid facial expression, to the detailed rendering of its formal crown. One can only imagine the true splendor of the old court of Ife. The present head is a 20th Century copy modeled after the great Yoruba center at Ife dating originally approximately 1100-1450 A.D. The famous archaeological site at Ife in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and bronze heads cast in bronze including the original of this late replica that was also cast in Nigeria. Ife is considered to be the center and origin of the Yoruba people. This bronze cast head is of an Oni. The ruler at Ife, who still hold sway over the Yoruba at Ife today. That this is a replica cannot be doubted, but what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this vessel continue a tradition nearly 1000 years old and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. SPECTACULAR ANTIQUE YORUBA (NIGERIA) ADIRE MADE INTO A WRAP-AROUND SKIRT
Here is a real prize. This beautiful wrap-around skirt is made of a spectacular and rare piece of antique and genuine Nigerian adire cloth. The skirt was made by Aladire of Lagos(Nigeria) A famed designer of traditional materials. The adire is of an unfamiliar design; it consists of four patterned squares, one is named“wire” another is the one called“eggs” a third is similar to the“sahada” pattern, and the fourth, which is the most interesting, is one I have never seen before. The last one resembles a series of flowers or leaves and is a very striking pattern. The cloth is the adire eleko type, manufactured by hand-painting the design on the basic cotton cloth using chicken feathers and a cassava-flour paste-this provides the starch-resist as the cloth enters the indigo dying vats. The skirt is fully lined. A necessity with real adire, as ... morethe indigo dye is not color fast. The waist is about 41 inches, with ties at each end. There is also an opening in the waistband, like a large button hole, where the tie is threaded through to hold things together. From waistband to bottom hem is about 42 inches, and the bottom of the skirt is about 85 inches long. In the 1920s and 30s adire was a major local craft in the towns of Abeokuta and Ibadan.
