This is an original. Vintage, beaded& hand-crafted diviners belt, created in Nigeria-Western Africa(Yoruba People Tribe) The piece is 53" tall ... moreby 7" in width. The clever design and imagery on the belt features four men and women-dancing and one on a sort of swing. The diviners belt is also known as the King's Belt with each beaded color signifying a different god. The fact that this piece is almost entirely beaded suggests it is of the most important quality! The religious practices and ceremonies of Shango became the basis of Santeria when mixed with Western European religious influences, especially Catholicism, and transplanted to the New World. If anyone has any additional information about tribe/country on this, I'd love to hear what you know. Informational notes on this was very limited. This item is from a small private collection of primarily African tribal collectibles/art(also includes a few North West/Canadian/Eskimo/Asian pieces/US Art Work-paintings and lithographs) Most of the African material was collected in the 1970s and represents varies tribes from the Cameroon. Zimbabwe, Ghana, Burkino Faso and others.

This is a beautiful piece of adire in the"Olokun" pattern that has been made into a boubou or dress(similar to a Hawaiian muumuu) The meaning of"olokun" in this case is"Life is Sweet. for Olokun is the goddess of the sea-money comes from over the sea" money is sweet" and so"life is sweet" The cloth in this pattern is divided differently from any other adire. It always consists of two rows of five large squares with long rectangles at each end, and at the bottom, twelve smaller squares. The cloth almost always has some variation of"OK" on it-which can be seen in several locations on this piece. Tops" and"mats" are also found in almost every version of the"Olokun" design; and"plantains" matches" and"wire" are also common. This boubou was ... moremade for my wife and is colorfast-which is why the indigo color is not as dark as adire often is. We lived in Lagos from 1972 through 1975. And she bought a lot of adire during that time, usually in the huge market in Ibadan. She wore it a few times, but not very often. There are a few small areas of discoloration along places where it was folded in storage. After all, it is very old and has been in storage for about thirty years. The dress measures about 56 inches by 44 inches, which is, of course, doubled in terms of the fabric. Essentially, the dressmaker has folded a large piece of the adire double and sewn it together along the side and across the top, with a small opening for the head to go through. So it is pretty much the original double cut of adire. The individual design squares and rectangles are exceedingly varied and show many different patterns used in Yoruba adire making. This is a rare example of the old adire. Which is seldom made any more. Most of the old skills and artisans are gone now, replaced by cheap and colorful printed fabrics from The Netherlands, as so often seen among African Americans who try to emulate the old ways in their attire. Additional information: For ages. Brass and gold African beads have been made using the “lost wax method.” First a model of the object is made from beeswax, then dipped repeatedly in a solution of fine ash or charcoal powder mixed with water. This forms a mold, or “crucible,” which is allowed to dry and harden. In the case of beads with fine strings in their design, a syringe is used to produce the long, thin wax pieces which are then wrapped around charcoal to leave a hole during the heating process. As the molds harden, channels are left in them to enable the wax to drain out during the heating process which takes place in a kiln. As the wax melts and is “lost”, molten brass or gold is poured into the mold to form the bead or ornament. When the metal has cooled, the molds are broken open and cleared away and the new art object is thoroughly cleaned and shined before it is presented to the world. In some cases the final product is gilded for an especially rich finish. 72148* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! Africa Dire

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS ITEM IS VERY OLD. The arts of the Yoruba are as numerous as their deities. And many objects are placed on shrines to honor the gods and the ancestors. Beautiful sculpture abounds in wood and brass and the occasional terracotta. Varied masking traditions have resulted in a great diversity of mask forms. Additional important arts include pottery, weaving, beadworking and metalsmithing. The Yoruba claim that they have 401 deities; in truth. There are more than these. The complexity of their cosmology has led Western scholars to compare them to the Ancient Greeks and their impressive pantheon. Yoruba deities are known as orisha, and the high ... moregod is Olorun. No organized priesthoods or shrines exist in honor of Olorun, but his spirit is invoked to ask for blessings and to confer thanks. The Yoruba believe that when they die they enter the realm of the ancestors where they still have influence on earth. Annual homage is paid to the grave sites of ones' forbears, and lineage heads are responsible for honoring all deceased members of the lineage through a yearly sacrifice. Maskers(egungun) appear at funerals and are believed to embody the spirit of the deceased person. Other important orishas include Eshu, the trickster; Shango, the god of thunder; and Ogun, the god of iron and modern technology. The Yoruba people reside mainly in Nigeria but are spread across to Benin. Lush forest and Savannah areas surround them. Their origins can be researched back to the end of the first millennium. Once the figure is carved, the artist activates it by soaking it in a special solution and rubbing it with specific oils. The mother treats the ere ibeji as if it were alive. Feeding, dressing, and bathing the image. Its face is washed with soap or sugarcane fiber, then rubbed with a cloth and indigo or laundry bluing. After a period of time, the facial features may be rubbed away. Recommended Reading: See ISN'T S/HE A DOLL-PLAY AND RITUAL IN AFRICAN SCULPTURE" by Cameron. Collectabe / Old Opon Ifa Divination Board, Yoruba /Nigeria/ Babalawo / Santeria
The Yoruba of Nigeria create beautiful works of art which are often based on an ancient traditional Yoruba religion. Called Ifa. Ifa is a system of divination based on the number sixteen and its multiples. Ifa is presided over by Orunmila(sometimes called Ifa) the orisa of wisdom, knowledge, and divination. Orunmila transmits and interprets the wishes of the single God Olodumare(also known as Olorun) through the teachings of Ifa. Ifa priests, called babalawo or"father of the secrets, cast 16 sacred palm nuts(ikin) from hand to hand 8 times. Then based on how many palm nuts remain in one hand, after each cast, the babalawo marks patterns in sacred powder(iye-irosun) spread over a divination tray(opon Ifa) Based on the configuration of the marks the babalawo recites one or many of the 256 memorized ancient Ifa oracles, created by Olodumare, ... moredesigned to give guidance and direction. When a client recognizes an oracle verse as significant, it is pieced together with other verses to form a guiding message. This sculpture depicts a kneeling woman holding a divination bowl. The kneeling pose in Yoruba art communicates respect and is often referred to as Olumeye, One-Who-Knows-Honor. Bowls such as this were used to hold the 16 sacred palm nuts used in Ifa divination. Kola nuts, also held in offering bowls such as this, were given as a sign of peace and welcome to visiting guests. Kola nuts are bitter, caffeine-containing seeds valued throughout West Africa for their thirst quenching and stimulant properties. Carved on the face of the bowl is the image of orisa Esu(also known as Elegba) the divine messenger and trickster who is also the guardian of markets, paths, and crossroads. Esu makes it possible to communicate between the human world and the realm of divine forces. If honored, Esu will communicate your wishes; and if angered, he sends garbled messages and wreaks havoc. Board comes with metal stand, can be easily removed. Because of the hair line crack running along the bottom of the board this board it

Shango / Chango Altar / Shrine Figure, Yoruba, Nigeria / Santeria
Shango known as a powerful warrior and the fourth legendary king of the Oyo kingdom. Shango was renowned for his fiery temper, which was often compared to the thunderous roar and flashing lightning of a storm. The many myths surrounding Shango emphasize his impulsive use of power and his ability to destroy. One myth mentions that Shango’s chiefs ended his tyrannical rule by dethroning him and expelling him from the capital. After Shango hangs himself, his friends learn charm-making and acquire the power to attract lightning to take vengeance on the houses of their(and the former king’s) enemies. A second story recounts how Shango, fascinated with magical powers, inadvertently kills several of his wives and children with a thunderstorm he conjured up. His sorrow leads him to abdicate the throne and hang himself; his enemies scorn his name. ... moreWhen thunderstorms destroy much of the capital, Shango’s followers say it is the former king himself punishing the slanderers. Measures 9" in height by 3" at width. Secured on a red oak wood base
