This plate would also be used for such hospitable display foods, such as fruits, kola nuts, or for serving house guests. BACKGROUND The Yoruba people live mainly in the southwest of Nigeria and the south of Benin. Moreover Yoruba traditions live on as far afield as Brazil. Cuba, Haiti and the Americas in the descendants of Yoruba slaves. The term"Yoruba" is said to derive from"Yarbanci, a nickname given by the Hausa or the Fulani to the inhabitants of the Oyo Kingdom. This name was in turn introduced by missionaries from the middle of the nineteenth century, who were the first to study the Yoruba language. Prior to that, the Yoruba-speaking peoples referred to itself by the names of their different sub-groups. Earlier the Yoruba organized themselves into a large number of city-states, traditionally administered by kings(oba) who held political as well as religious power Among the various autonomous city-states, the leading place was primarily occupied by Ileff and Old Oyo. Among the Ekiti Yoruba, the Epa festival celebrates life and abundance and the unity of the village and honor the familes and lineages who own and sponsor the mask and bask in a kind of reflected glory. They celebrate the life of honored elders and reinforce the corporate structure of the community. Epa m
Exquisite African Art - Beautiful Yoruba Carved Palace Board Tribal Carving
Exquisite African Art- Beautiful Yoruba Carved Palace Board Yoruba Palace Board Tribe: Yoruba Origin: Nigeria Materials: Wood Dimensions: 111cm Tall x 53cm Wide A beautiful Yoruba Palace Board. An amazing carving from” Olowe” of Ise(the most famous of all Yoruba carvers) apprentice” Olowabi“ Olowabi was an apprentice under Olowe for over ten years, and learned very well from his master as you can see from this beautiful work of art. Olowabi carved this Yoruba palace board for a palace in Ife, the workmanship is second to none. Olowe of Ise was known to work exclusively for Royalty. Art historians have identified Olowe’s signature style in a corpus of nearly fifty works. His exceptional talent as a master sculptor was well known within. And beyond, the region in which he worked. He was honored by his contemporaries in the poetry of highly ... morepersonal oral praise songs known as oriki. The oriki is a celebration and form of tribute that both immortalizes artists and reflects the contemporary recognition they receive. In his oriki, Olowe is described as“One who carves the hard wood of the iroko tree as though it were as soft as a calabash. The extensive poem also lists some of the numerous places his work can be found: If you visit the Ogoga’s palace/ And the one at Owo/ The same thing at Ukiti. His work is there. Mention Olowe’s name at Ogbagi, in Use, too, In Deji’s palace, Olowe also worked at Ogotun/ There was a carved lion. That was taken to England. With his hands he made it. In addition to being an accomplished sculptor. Olowe was also responsible for a workshop that apprenticed many young artists. As a master sculptor, he would supervise and train the members of his workshop until they were skilled enough to receive their own commissions or open their own workshops. Yoruba sculptors traditionally learn their craft in an apprentice system. Analogous to those of medieval and Renaissance Europe. It is not known with whom Olowe trained. This gap in his biography, as well as the scarce

Oya ~ Yoruba Santeria Goddess of Transformation & Storms ~ Barbie doll OOAK AA
Oya ~ Yoruba Deity of Winds. Tempest, Transformation. OOAK BARBIE DOLL. Clothing is non removeable as well as all accessories. She has had a repaint done to her face and her hair has been redone and repainted with an adhesive. About: Oya is the powerful Yorùbá Orisha of the winds and tempests. She is considered either the sister of the Orisha of storms Shango. Or one of His three wives, with and Oba. She can manifest as winds ranging from the gentlest breeze to the raging hurricane or cyclone. She goes forth with Her husband during His thunderstorms. Destroying buildings, ripping up trees, and blowing things down. Oya is known as a fierce warrior and strong protectress of women, who call on Her to settle disputes in their favor. As the Orisha of change. She brings down the dead wood to make room for the new, and She uses Her machete ... moreor sword to clear a path for new growth. She is believed to watch over the newly dead and assist them as they make the transition from life. She is equated with the Vodou Lwa. Who, like Oya, guards graveyards. Oya is the Orisha of the Niger River. And Her violent rainstorms are said to be its source. Like Oshun, She is worshipped not only in Africa but in Brazil, where the Amazon is said to be Her river, and where She is equated with the Virgin Mary as Our Lady of La Candelaria. Oya, who is an Orisha of a very fiery demeanor, also seems to have a far-flung connection with the Celtic or Bridgit. Both in Her Vodou counterpart Maman Brijit, and in Her associated Catholic saint, Our Lady of La Candelaria, whose feast day, February 2nd, is shared with Bride. Oya's attributes are the sword or machete and the flywhisk. And Her animal is the water buffalo, in Whom She sometimes manifests. Her mother is said to be. The Great Sea Mother. Oya Herself is said to be the mother of nine children-Egungun and four sets of twins. Her number is nine. Her color is burgundy or purple, and Her metal is copper. Offerings to Oya include eggplants, coins, red wine, and cloth. This card in a read

Vintage Yoruba Divinity Bag - Nigeria Higly Decorated with Beadwork
I have for sale by auction a very rare Yoruba divinity bag. This is a wonderful piece. It was used to hold various tools of the shaman's trade in southwest Nigeria. This bag is highly decorated on the front with a variety of shells. Beadwork, springs, buttons, etc. all sewn into the material of the bad.I bought it from a highly respected African ethnographic store in San Diego some years ago. It is an amazing piece from the early to mid-twentieth century. The pictures tell the tale of this amazing piece. I am not a dealer, but am moving to Mexico in about 6 weeks full-time in my retirement. I hope to raise pecans and write. My first book- Religion and Revolution in Mexico's North" will be out next week- a shameless plug! I am selling off my pieces poco a poco. I am selling this piece as a true auction, the highest bidder wins ... moreit. I have been on Ebay since 1996 with a perfect record for over 830 transactions. Bid with confidence. I am listing several other things(Mata Ortiz pottery, Ibegi twins and a Fulani fan) today and tomorrow. Please check them out. This is a five day auction, ending Friday noon. We may be in Mexico then and will have to wait a few days to ship the pieces out. Please be patient in that regard. I usually ship within 24 hrs, but these pieces may take a bit longer. I never make money on shipping. If the cost for packing and shipping is less than what I am charging, I will refund the difference via Paypal. We have to go and get fingerprinted for our permanent resident visas! Thanks for looking at my auctions. Best wishes to all. Authentic Yoruba Ifa Divination Bowl with Serpent Motif
Every once in a while ebay provides a collector an opportunity to acquire a marvelous primitive work of art. This age hardened and large. 18x9 in. lidded divination storage bowl will not disappoint its owner. When the priest is not using his divination material he keeps it in this bowl. The bowl has the relief images of the Eshu face and it is circled with a serpent which denotes that it is used in Ifa divination. It is a heavy piece and and the wood is so old it feels like petrified wood. It is a work to behold and without question a very old and used divination tool.
Lot 59, Ibeji Male & Female w/Protective Beads. Yoruba /Santeria / Ifa
Here is a fine example of Ere Ibeji Male Twin with protective beads. Yoruba Nigeria, measuring 8 1/2" by 2 1/2" When the carving of the Ere Ibeji is completed. The artist is given a feast and payment as determined by the Orishas. Once the figure is brought to the family dwelling, it is placed on a shrine dedicated to Elegba with the hope that the Orisha or soul, which was split in two parts when the twins were born, will now again reside in the figure that represents the dead twin. The sculpted figure is treated and cared for as if it were alive. It is rubbed in sacramental oil, washed, fed, clothed, sung to and prayed to. It is kept standing during the day, and is laid down at night. Often it will be dressed in the same clothing as the living twin, or be decorated in a beaded vest or shown with raised sandals, indicating possible ... moreroyal connections. The responsibility of caring for the ibeji is borne by the mother and female family members of subsequent generations. The sculpture is expected to avert evil from the household, strengthen the manifestations of family love, stare down death, illuminate the pathway through the valley of immortality, and bring good fortune to all who treat it with respect and offer it tokens of affection. Conversely, bad fortune and curses may be engendered if the ibeji is ignored. Similar pairs are currently selling on ebay at $400/ $500 as classified as"Old" These Ibejis are made to appear old but are perhaps 2-3 years. Old but not made 20 years ago as many may say, your call? PLEASE NOTE: PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 4 DAYS OF PURCHASE. BECAUSE OF RECENT PROBLEMS WITH PAYMENTS NOT RECEIVED. I SET EBAY TO AUTOMATICALLY OPEN A CASE IF PAYMENT IS NOT RECEIVED WITHIN 4 DAYS. Bid with confidence. No reserves! P lease see my other auctions for great deals.

Top of a Yoruba Shango staff
In ceremonies honoring Shango(Sàngó) The Yoruba god of thunder and lightning, devotees dance with wooden staffs symbolizing double-bladed axes. The fiery-tempered deity was said to throw Neolithic stone blades to earth as thunderbolts during storms. When carved by a master artist. Yoruba Necklace Brass Coiled Beads African
Title, Yoruba Necklace Brass Coiled Beads African, Other Names, coil beads, Made In, West Africa and Europe, Traded In, Africa, Approximate Age, Early 1900s or later, Overall Condition, Fair. Bent and dented. Some beads darkened with age and oxidation. Some of our beads have traveled at least three continents. And have graced numerous owners. Small chips, corrosion, and pitting are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. Bead Size, 4-5 mm diameter. Please see picture with penny for size comparison. Strand Length, 22 inches(includes string/raffia) Additional information: For ages. Brass and gold African beads have been made using the “lost wax method.” First a model of the object is made from beeswax, then dipped repeatedly in a solution of fine ash or charcoal powder mixed with water. This forms ... morea mold, or “crucible,” which is allowed to dry and harden. In the case of beads with fine strings in their design, a syringe is used to produce the long, thin wax pieces which are then wrapped around charcoal to leave a hole during the heating process. As the molds harden, channels are left in them to enable the wax to drain out during the heating process which takes place in a kiln. As the wax melts and is “lost”, molten brass or gold is poured into the mold to form the bead or ornament. When the metal has cooled, the molds are broken open and cleared away and the new art object is thoroughly cleaned and shined before it is presented to the world. In some cases the final product is gilded for an especially rich finish. 64393* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! Africa Direct.
