Miniature, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Yoruba, Materials, Wood. ... morePigment, beads, aluminum, Approximate Age, Mid 20th century, Dimensions, 11 inches H. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Worn patina, Additional Information: The helmet and skirt suggest that this is a colonial era piece. Among the Yoruba. Who have the highest rate of twins in the world, the arrival of twins is seen as both a blessing and an omen because of the high mortality rate. If a twin dies, an image dedicated to Ibeji, the deity of twins, is carved to serve as the earthly abode for the spirit of the deceased. AFRICAN DOLLS FOR PLAY AND MAGIC, by Dagan. Among the Yoruba, twins have special powers, much like the orisha. and are to be treated with respect throughout their lives. If a twin dies, the mother seeks a diviner's advice about which carver should make the ere ibeji to stand in for the dead child. Once the figure is carved, the artist activates it by soaking it in a special solution and rubbing it with specific oils. The mother treats the ere ibeji as if it were alive, feeding, dressing, and bathing the image. Its face is washed with soap or sugarcane fiber, then rubbed with a cloth and indigo or laundry bluing. After a period of time, the facial features may be rubbed away. Yoruba Olumeye offering bowl African Tribal Creations Yorba fowl pot Nigeria art
An African Tribal Creations gallery Yoruba Olumeye'Fowl Pot' Hospitality Bowl For a great many in the African art collecting community. This culture need no introduction. The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa, and are renowned for their copious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their ... morehistory of human sacrifice. Born exclusively from the desire to be hospitable. And fulfilling a purely secular and utilitarian function, the Olumeye bowl is a common artform that would be found in many a Yoruba home, used to store kola nuts for the enjoyment of visitors. The word'Olumeye' can be roughly translated to mean'one who knows honor/respect' and is commonly associated with the depiction of these figures in the kneeling position. The top half of the'chicken' is removable to reveal the reservoir wherein the kola nuts would be stored, and the bird itself is said to represent honor, prosperity, and hospitality, as it could be offered in sacrifice. This bowl is moderately large in stature, dense and heavy, and is beautifully pigmented across most of its surface. Though some of its color has faded with age, it is largely intact, and is one of the finer Olumeye examples we've come across. The figure and bowl are very elegantly carved, with plenty of fine detail, and the top fits nicely onto the bowl, a sign of good original craftsmanship. Upon the woman figure's back a small child has been carved; this maternity element is also common to these

Lot 2, Exquiste Igbo Mmwo Spirit Maiden Mask /Yoruba / Nigeria
The Igbo use thousands of masks. Which incarnate unspecified spirits of the dead, forming a vast community of souls. The outstanding characteristic of the many Igbo masks is that they are painted chalk white, the color of the spirit. Masked dancers wore extremely elaborate costumes(sometimes ornamented with mirrors) and often their feet and hands were covered. With their masks, the Igbo oppose beauty to bestiality, the feminine to the masculine, black to white. The masks, of wood or fabric, are employed in a variety of dramas: social satires, sacred rituals(for ancestors and invocation of the gods) initiation, second burials, and public festivals, which now include Christmas and Independence Day. Some masks appear at only one festival, but the majority appear at many or all. Best known are those of the Northern Ibo mmo society. Which represent ... morethe spirits of deceased maidens and their mothers with masks symbolizing beauty. Among the Southern Ibo, the ekpe society. Introduced from the Cross River area. Uses contrasting masks to represent the maiden spirit and the elephant spirit, the latter representing ugliness and aggression and the former representing beauty and peacefulness. A similar contrast is found in their okorosia masks. Which correspond to the mmo of the Northern Ibo. The Eastern Ibo are best known for masquerades associated with the harvest festival. In which the forms of the masks are determined by tradition, though the content of the play varies from year to year. Stock characters include Mbeke. The European; Mkpi. The he-goat; and Mba. Which appear in pairs, one representing a boy dressed as a girl mimicking the behavior of a girl, the other representing the girl being satirized. Measurements: 17" at length by 8" at width by 13" at depth.

Yoruba Necklace Metal Coil Gilded Brass Beads African
Title, Yoruba Necklace Metal Coil Gilded Brass Beads African, Materials, Brass(unknown metal content) Made In, West Africa and Europe, Traded In, Africa, Approximate Age, Early 20th Century or later Overall Condition, Good. Damage/Repair, Bent and dented. Some beads darkened with age and oxidation. People, Yoruba, Necklace Length, 24 inches(includes string/raffia) Additional information: For ages. Brass and gold African beads have been made using the “lost wax method.” First a model of the object is made from beeswax, then dipped repeatedly in a solution of fine ash or charcoal powder mixed with water. This forms a mold, or “crucible,” which is allowed to dry and harden. In the case of beads with fine strings in their design, a syringe is used to produce the long, thin wax pieces which are then wrapped around charcoal ... moreto leave a hole during the heating process. As the molds harden, channels are left in them to enable the wax to drain out during the heating process which takes place in a kiln. As the wax melts and is “lost”, molten brass or gold is poured into the mold to form the bead or ornament. When the metal has cooled, the molds are broken open and cleared away and the new art object is thoroughly cleaned and shined before it is presented to the world. In some cases the final product is gilded for an especially rich finish. 72504* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! Africa Direct. Wow! Yoruba? Rare? 1930s? Nigerian Thorn wood Carving Woman/Baby Combing Woman
Up for bid is what I believe is a thornwood carving of the Yoruba in Nigeria. Africa. These carvings are thought by some to be originally created for a tourist market. The craft started in the 1930s and may continue up to the present. I researched the internet for information and any info I have is based on the research. I hope there is an ebayer who knows more than I do. More recent carvings from the 70s are not as nicely detailed as this one and even more recent carvings are somewhat crude. That why I'm speculating this piece to be older. These pieces are carved from the ata or thornwood. This piece measures about 2 1/2" in height, and the base 3 1/2" I believe the printed information indicates the carving is by S. O. Alle. The word Ibadan and the number 16 is on the bottom. Ibadan is a city in Nigeria. Please study the pics ... morecarefully and email any question you may have. This a very delicate piece I will take great care in packaging. God Bless! On Apr-29-13 at 20:44:05 PDT. Seller added the following information: You may wish to see the other thorn carving up for bid. By the same carver. Shipping will be combined.

Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, barring the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. The Yoruba is also an African ethnic group with a history of human sacrifice. The pantheon of Yoruba figures is replete with anthropomorphic sculptures.
