Overall Condition, Poor, Damage/Repair, bent. Visible traces of glue, loose strands, dust on cloth top ball loose, Yoruba Beaded Crown Blue Adenla Nigeria Africa Additional Information: A superb Yoruba beaded crown entirely in blue beads and decorated with birds and balls! The right to wear crowns is limited to approximately fifty Yoruba kings. Theoretically. Only direct descendents of one of the sixteen children of the god ORISHA, first king of the Yoruba people, can wear them. ORISHA blessed mankind with the use of beads, and their use is restricted to those whose spiritual powers enable them to move across the boundary that separates men from gods, the secular from the sacred. The crown itself is worshiped. It is placed upon the king's head from behind, usually by the senior wife, because he may not look upon the bird which goes on the top, which holds powerful medicines to protect him and his destiny. The veil is to keep viewers from seeing the king's face, masking his individuality, and also focusing attention on the real focus of power, the crown. The birds on the side symbolize the fact that the king rules"only with the support of the mothers. Crowns limited to those who could trace their heritage to Odudua, first king of Yoruba(at Ife) Crowns are called orisha(deity) and is the object of care and veneration by a woman at court. The veil focuses the viewer's attention to the crown and to venerate the king's head. Orisha is the generic name for a deity and not a king. It was either of the orishas Olokun(god of the sea) or Obalufon that gave humans the gift of beads. In the past, the use of prestige beadworks such as this was limited to kings, priests and priestesses and certain diviners. Birds represent women, and signify that the King cannot rule without the support of women. Recommended Reading: See F

In earlier times, new-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; they were awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, and their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. Few African artisans achieved as highly as the people of the now extinct Benin kingdom. The Benin people were denizens of Nigeria, and they brought the art of bronze(actually mostly brass) casting to a height that has likely not yet been exceeded on the continent of Africa. Upon the arrival of European missionaries and invaders, the discovery of Benin art led them to the belief that this art was stolen from the Jews or Egyptians, and could not have been produced by these people who were at that point considered subhuman. Extraordinary masks and figures had been produced using the simple lost-wax casting method, in addition to the now famous life-sized brass leopard figures, exclusively associated with the oba. Pigment, ... moreApproximate Age, mid 20th century, Dimensions, Height 9 inches, Overall Condition, Good  Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. Damage/Repair, old chips on base and nipples. And scrapes in places, Additional Information: The Yoruba of Nigeria and of the Benin Republic are known for having an extraordinarily high rate of multiple births. The rate of twin births is one of the highest in the world. 45 of every 1,000 births(in the United States it is 28.9 of every 1000) There is also a high mortality rate; half of the twins die shortly after birth. In earlier times. New-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; they were awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, and their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. By the 19th century the cult of the Ere Ibeji was firmly established and continues to this day. The death of one or both twins is regarded as a great calamity for the family, one which requires immediate appeasement of the soul of the deceased child. Though the cause of the high rate of twin births among Yoruba women has not been established. The cultural grieving process is well documented and may be observed in the carving of a figure known as Ere Ibeji, which both represents the lost child and serves as a rit

African YORUBA carved mother figure
YORUBA. NIGERIA ESHU CARVED MOTHER FIGURE(Very rare) Weight: 2.6kg Height: 22" Width: 9" The Yoruba are an important ethnic group mainly occupying Southwestern Nigeria. Mainly for genetic reasons. This very large tribe happens to present the highest dizygotic twinning rate in the world(4.4% of all maternities) The high perinatal mortality rate associated with such pregnancies has contributed to the integration of a special twin belief system within the African traditional religion of this tribe. The latter is based on the concept of a supreme deity called Olodumare or Olorun. Assisted by a series of secondary gods( Orisha) while Yoruba religion also involves immortality and reincarnation of the soul based on the animistic cult of ancestors. Twins are therefore given special names and believed to detain special preternatural powers. ... moreIn keeping with their refined artistic tradition. The Yoruba have produced numerous wooden statuettes called Ibejis that represent the souls of deceased newborn twins and are involved in elaborate rituals. Among Yoruba traditional beliefs and lore some twin-related themes are represented which are also found in other parts of the world. Eshu. A trickster, is one of the Yoruba orisha(gods) Eshu is also a contradictory personality responsible for the good and bad changes that occur in life. The Yoruba honor and make sacrifices to Eshu to placate him and they place Eshu imagery on carved doors. And shrines to the god at crossroads, marketplaces, town gates, and compound entrances, places where Eshu can cause unexpected things to happen. The mother figure with long ponytail-like hairstyles or headdresses may represent worshippers of Eshu. According to a fellow ebay member: It is Yoruba from Nigeria and is a maternity shrine piece to the Divine Messenger Esu(Eshu) and right now I wish I could win the lottery because it is magificent: Every single element SCREAMS Yoruba and the queue(pig-tail) with the face is an unmistakable mark of an Eshu figure. Fantastic Beaded Yoruba Figure Group
This is a quite old Yoruba piece. I bought it about 15 years ago from the estate of a man who lived in Africa in the 1940's and early 1950's and purchased many pieces while he was there. This piece was obviously old when he bought it. It would probably have been the top sculpture for a basket. It is quite large at about 20" tall and approximately 12" in diameter. The bead work is in amazing good condition. Considering the age, with no missing beads that I can see and the beadwork is tight. It is fairly dirty, but I was afraid to clean it up and take away from the age that it shows. It has a man on a horse with a person standin on each side. Each of the figures is beaded and then then each have a beaded tunic on top of that. Because of shipping costs. I am selling this USA shipment only.

This is an adire eleko, machine stitching used to resist and make patterns. This textile decorated with interesting cowrie shell motifs drawn by hand. Starch-resist is a technique that consists of applying a dye-resisting agent to a cotton fabric by coating the surface of the cotton cloth with flour paste(cassava or cornflower) and then immersing it in a cold water dye such as indigo as is the case for this textile. Starch is only applied to one side of the cloth. Cassava starch will be applied through the zinc stencils and the stencils placed on top of the cloth would be pressed into the cloth with a metal spatula. To well perform this task the cloth will be nailed flat on a table. A series of stencils may be required to get good patterns. The cloth will then be soaked into the the indigo- dye bath repeatedly to make sure the dyeing process is well-done. The starch is then scraped off the cloth, which is hung out to dry. 73784* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 200
Yoruba Brass Staff Man With Pipe 19th C? Nigeria African
Title, Yoruba Brass Staff Man Smoking a Pipe May be 19th Century Nigeria African, Type of Object, Artifact. Pipe, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Yoruba. Southern region area of Oshogobo, Materials, Brass or Bronze, Approximate Age, Late Nineteenth or Early Twentieth, Dimensions, 18.5 inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, some oxidation on the surface, Among the Yoruba who live in the Ijebu region of the southern Yoruba. A cult known as Oshugbo was open to all adult males and females. In the Oyo region the cult was known as Ogboni and spreading to other areas of the Yoruba the cult gained great power and authority serving political and judicial roles. Onile, an earth deity, the“owner of the earth” earth mother? gave authority and sanctioned senior members of Ogboni to act for her. Membership in Oshugbo/Ogboni and the level of ... moreauthority that one held within the secret society was indicated by ownership of bronze figures set into the earth before each member as they sat as a council of elders to settle disputes or deal with political affairs of the town. Cast brass or bronze figures such as this have been identified to Ogboni activities and their use can be dated in early Yoruba history, however their actual use and symbolic meaning is still not fully understood within this secretive cult. However as a symbolic object it is thought that they serve a similar purpose, as do the cast brass Ogboni figures among the Yoruba, indicating that the owner has the right and social obligation to participate in determining the community’s future and insuring social control. As a‘title staff’ it would indicate one’s rank within the Society and reflect through the complex iconography active within Ogboni, the relationship with Ogun, the Yoruba deity of iron. The fact that the figure is smoking a pipe identifies him as an elite male with associations to Ogun and a devotee of founding ancestors related to an earth cult or the deity Onile. The small loop cast at the top of the head would have had a chain attached t

Look! Nigeria Yoruba 1930s? Rare? Thornwood Carving Canoe Has Maker Mark $9.99
Up for bid is what I believe is a thornwood carving of the Yoruba in Nigeria. Africa. These carvings are thought by some to be originally created for a tourist market. The craft started in the 1930s and may continue up to the present. I researched the internet for information and any info I have is based on the research. I hope there is an ebayer who knows more than I do. More recent carvings from the 70s are not as nicely detailed as this one and even more recent carvings are somewhat crude. That why I'm speculating this piece to be older. These pieces are carved from the ata or thornwood. This piece measures about 5" in height, and the base 9 1/2" As indicated, I did two repairs to glue back together the right arm of the man with the spear. Also I glued the man in the back, his feet at the chins. I tried to take clear shots ... moreof these two breaks. I believe the maker's information indicates the carving is by S. O. Alle. The word Ibadan is on the bottom. Ibadan is a city in Nigeria. Please study the pics carefully and email any question you may have. This a very delicate piece I will take great care in packaging. God Bless!

Fine Antique Pair of Yoruba Ibedji Statuettes Oyo style - Nigeria
This is a fine pair of Ibedji statuettes from the Yoruba tribe in Southern Nigeria. Ibedji statuettes were carved upon the passing of a twin– so as to honor the spirit of the passed– and kept by the surviving twin. Until their own death, at which time the statuette was considered to lose its power. Ibedji statuettes exist in great variations of styles– which are traceable in part to the region of origin but also to the family lineage and its cult. The pair here is made of a female and a male. Both show beautiful characteristics. The elevated hairdo is made of four lobes(with interesting triangular motives in between) Which is typical of the Oyo region in Northern Yoruba land. The face is calm. Expressive and smiling with diamond shape eyes and low, pointy ears. Scarifications are comprised of a mix of vertical and horizontal lines. The body ... moreis well proportioned. With round shoulders and large arms. There is also a nice intricate triangular scarification work on the belly(the recurring use of triangular motive is noticeable on this pair) The legs are short. And compact– and actually pretty large, with protruding bottoms. Both statuettes show an extraordinary very dark. Shiny patina– which makes for very old pieces, I believe probably late 19 th/early 20 th c. Dimensions are 11x3.

ANTIQUE YORUBA DANCE MASK TRIBAL ART
This is a Yoruba headdress or mask for the Egungun ceremony. Yoruba religion is based in ancestor worship and the Egungun ceremony glorifies the ancestor. And communicates with them through the dancer who goes into a trance. The“masks” are worn on top of the head so that the ancestors who are in the heavens above may see them. This mask was purchased at auction in London on Sept. 29, 1988 at Phillips sale of Tribal art, lot 183. While most tribal art on the market is new and made for collectors, we purchased only at the London auctions to acquire genuine examples which were made for, and used by tribal peoples. The mask is about 9” high, carved from a single piece of wood and in condition as shown. It alternates male and female heads, representing a deceased ancestor couple, each twice for emphasis as well as aesthetic balance. HERRAMIENTAS DE OGGUN OGUN GERRERO RELIGION YORUBA IFA SANTERIA
this one of a kind crafted Lucumi art originally hails from Trinidad. Cuba. AFRO CUBAN SANTERIA INSPIRED CONTEMPORARY ARTWORK The arts of the Afro-Cuban Santería and Ifá religious practices gain their significance within the setting of altar assemblages and ritual performances. These sacred arts carry symbolic and functional value. But they are also evaluated and appreciated by participants in ceremonies for their appropriateness and beauty. Santería arts express meanings that refer to the gods; at the same time, the very creation of these sacred arts is considered an act of devotion. Santería is a religion combining traditional West African Yoruba beliefs with aspects of Iberian Catholicism. During the days of slavery in Cuba. Slaves were prohibited from practicing their native religions. In order to maintain their faith, ... morethey secretly superimposed Catholic saints and personages on their own spiritual figures(called Orishas) Thus, it looked like they were praying to a saint or to the Virgin Mary, but they were also invoking one of their Orishas. In time, both belief systems merged. Not only was Santeria instrumental in slave liberation movements, but it also greatly influenced music, literature and other cultural manifestations throughout Latin America. Today, Santeria is practiced wherever its devotees migrate and is still comprised of a complex mythology, a pantheon of hundreds of deities(orishas) and a system of symbols, signs and ceremonies. The exhibition on view in Toronto features more than 20 mixed media works whose content and aesthetic draw on the symbols, mythologies and practices of Santeria. MEDIUM: Metal. Yoruba Eshu Dance Wand, Staff, Yorouba, Nigeria, African Tribal Creations, art
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION! Normal.dotm 0 0 1 131 751 Full Sail 6 1 922 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false This NO RESERVE auction is for a Yoruba Shango Dance Wand. These wands are intended as an object to be carried by worshippers loyal to the god Shango. Especially during celebrations that champion him, and are considered one of the most important pieces of art in the Shango cult. In the canon of Yoruba mythology, Shango, or Sango, was once a mortal king, and an ancestor of the Yoruba people. He was considered to be an extremely powerful, and often violent ruler, capable of producing thunder and lightening. This power, however, eventually resulted in his death, which came through the accidental destruction of his own palace with lightning. His followers believed that after his death. He became a ... moredeity. Wands or staffs such as these typically depict a follower of Shango. The colors red and white, sacred to Shango, often embellish the carving and are procured from natural pigments. Known as a trickster god among the Yoruba pantheon. Eshu is widely worshipped, and both adored and feared by his followers. The god is commonly blamed for deeds of mischief, but also for great rewards and fortune, and terrible misfortune as well. Like the wands of the Shango cult, similar objects are produced by those who closely worship Eshu, and these can be quickly recognized by the characteristic headdress displayed on this piece. This wand is medium sized, featuring a male worshipper, and displays a thick chocolate brown patina, and pigment in many areas, as is common for these pieces. It features the also characteristic facial scarification marks which are part of almost all Yoruba art. The pigment is still relatively strong, with normal wear and exposure related marks in evidence. It does not appear to have undergone any breaks or repairs. This piece should make a nice addition to any collection. Dimensions are 19" tall x 3.5" x 2.5" It weighs just over one pound. MEDIUM: W

RARE OLD YORUBA PEOPLE GELEDE PAINTED HELMET - AMAZING DETAILS - FROM NIGERIA
You are bidding on a Rare and Old YORUBA PEOPLE Painted Gelede wood Helmet. From Nigeria. The arts of the Yoruba are as numerous as their deities. And many objects are placed on shrines to honor the gods and the ancestors. Beautiful sculpture abounds in wood and brass and the occasional terracotta. Varied masking traditions have resulted in a great diversity of mask forms. Additional important arts include pottery, weaving, beadworking and metalsmithing. The Yoruba claim that they have 401 deities; in truth. There are more than these. The complexity of their cosmology has led Western scholars to compare them to the Ancient Greeks and their impressive pantheon. Yoruba deities are known as orisha, and the high god is Olorun. No organized priesthoods or shrines exist in honor of Olorun, but his spirit is invoked to ask for blessings and to confer ... morethanks. The Yoruba believe that when they die they enter the realm of the ancestors where they still have influence on earth. Annual homage is paid to the grave sites of ones' forbears, and lineage heads are responsible for honoring all deceased members of the lineage through a yearly sacrifice. Maskers(egungun) appear at funerals and are believed to embody the spirit of the deceased person. Other important orishas include Eshu, the trickster; Shango, the god of thunder; and Ogun, the god of iron and modern technology. Strand Length, 25 inches.   Additional information: For ages. Brass and gold African beads have been made using the “lost wax method.” First a model of the object is made from beeswax, then dipped repeatedly in a solution of fine ash or charcoal powder mixed with water. This ... moreforms a mold, or “crucible,” which is allowed to dry and harden. In the case of beads with fine strings in their design, a syringe is used to produce the long, thin wax pieces which are then wrapped around charcoal to leave a hole during the heating process. As the molds harden, channels are left in them to enable the wax to drain out during the heating process which takes place in a kiln. As the wax melts and is “lost”, molten brass or gold is poured into the mold to form the bead or ornament. When the metal has cooled, the molds are broken open and cleared away and the new art object is thoroughly cleaned and shined before it is presented to the world. In some cases the final product is gilded for an especially rich finish. 71726* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! Africa Direct. AFRICAN YORUBA GELEDE NIGERIA WEST AFRICA WOOD AUTHENTIC CARVED HEAD DRESS
This is an old wood carving sculpture with birds eating the snakes. Bought in Ghana. West Africa I think about 25 years ago. So other than that I am not sure how old it truly is just liked it very much and brought it home to my collection. It has a lot of character& in great condition for its age. The cracks shown were there when we purchased it all those years ago. Think the dust on it is still from Ghana as this piece has been packed away for years waiting to find the right piece of furniture to showcase it on. I do not have much more info on it other than the notes I took in my diary/log book on purchases made during my travels. We were lucky enough to find this old old man who brought us to his house where he had lots of his fathers art work. He did not want to sell it but did for the money. It is a piece of true African art that ... moreI can part with if I can get my money back& add to my daughters college fund. All hand carved and the wood is substantial. In impeccable condition for its age. This sculpture mask looks great from every side of it and the carving is so simple in form yet overwhelmingly artistic. I have an incredible african art collection. Many items had to be certified to even leave the country in which they were bought. This item does not have paperwork although it did have to go through the proper channels with the antiques registry in order for us to take it out of the country. It measures 18" tall by 14" at widest and the circumference is about 32" It is a unique piece that most would have trouble getting out of the Country but the guide we were with was kind to introduce us to this person. Authentic African art and only my 2nd piece I decided I could part with of my career of collecting pieces over the last 30 years of my trips to Africa. I will take great care in packing it for you and it will be insured. All sales final. A kind person advised me that this is originally from Nigeria even though I bought it in Ghana and it is a Yoruba Gelede head dress for ceremonies.

Supplementary weft float and brocade patterning are common, as is the distinctive openwork made by using weft threads to tie together a group of warps. Lurex ... morefrom Japan, metallic thread, is sometimes used. Men have traditionally done the weaving, but some women weave as well. For great pictures of both the weaving and the textiles, and more information, see Clarke's THE ART OF AFRICAN TEXTILES. We do not recommend laundering textiles. And do not accept returns of textiles which have been laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. 70555* All content. YORUBA BRONZE CURRENCY BRACELET #2030 - For African Art Gallery
YORUBA BRONZE CURRENCY BRACELET#2030 Tribe: Yoruba. Country: Nigeria. Material: Bronze. Size:nbsp6" 15.24 cm) Diameter. Item: 2030 Condition: Heavy oxidation but good condition. Provenance: James E Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) The use of imported copper and brass bracelets or'manillas' as currency goes back at least to 1500. When the Portuguese based at the mouth of the Rio Real exchanged them for various commodities, from yams to cattle and slaves. These Yoruba bracelets were used as currency by the natives, but also melted down by them and recast into other forms, and used as currency. This situation continued until the beginning of the 20th century when the British. By then governing Nigeria, wanted to establish their own currency and forbade the use of any other. Much of the native currency was then buried and dug ... moreup again, only much later. There is some disagreements as to whether this type of object was wrought(that is.
