Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Worn patina, Additional Information: The helmet and skirt suggest that this is a colonial era piece. Among the Yoruba. Who have the highest rate of twins in the world, the arrival of twins is seen as both a blessing and an omen because of the high mortality rate. If a twin dies, an image dedicated to Ibeji, the deity of twins, is carved to serve as the earthly abode for the spirit of the deceased. AFRICAN DOLLS FOR PLAY AND MAGIC, by Dagan. Among the Yoruba, twins have special powers, much like the orisha. and are to be treated with respect throughout their lives. If a twin dies, the mother seeks a diviner's advice about which carver should make the ere ibeji to stand in for the dead child. Once the figure is carved, the artist activates it by soaking it in a special solution and rubbing it with specific oils. The mother treats the ere ibeji as if it were alive, feeding, dressing, and bathing the image. Its face is washed with soap or sugarcane fiber, then rubbed with a cloth and indigo or laundry bluing. After a period of time, the facial features may be rubbed away. Lot 53, Ibeji Male Twin with Exquiste Beaded Jacket. Yoruba /Santeria / Ifa
Here is a fine example of Ere Ibeji Male Twin with beaded jacket. Yoruba Nigeria, measuring 14" by 6" When the carving of the Ere Ibeji is completed. The artist is given a feast and payment as determined by the Orishas. Once the figure is brought to the family dwelling, it is placed on a shrine dedicated to Elegba with the hope that the Orisha or soul, which was split in two parts when the twins were born, will now again reside in the figure that represents the dead twin. The sculpted figure is treated and cared for as if it were alive. It is rubbed in sacramental oil, washed, fed, clothed, sung to and prayed to. It is kept standing during the day, and is laid down at night. Often it will be dressed in the same clothing as the living twin, or be decorated in a beaded vest or shown with raised sandals, indicating possible royal connections. ... moreThe responsibility of caring for the ibeji is borne by the mother and female family members of subsequent generations. The sculpture is expected to avert evil from the household, strengthen the manifestations of family love, stare down death, illuminate the pathway through the valley of immortality, and bring good fortune to all who treat it with respect and offer it tokens of affection. Conversely, bad fortune and curses may be engendered if the ibeji is ignored. PLEASE NOTE: PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 4 DAYS OF PURCHASE. BECAUSE OF RECENT PROBLEMS WITH PAYMENTS NOT RECEIVED. I SET EBAY TO AUTOMATICALLY OPEN A CASE IF PAYMENT IS NOT RECEIVED WITHIN 4 DAYS. Bid with confidence. No reserves! P lease see my other auctions for great deals.

Lot 584, Ibeji Male & Female Twins with Beaded Jackets. Yoruba /Santeria / Ifa
Here is a fine example of Ere Ibeji male and female twins with beaded jackets. Yoruba Nigeria, measuring 11" by 3 1/2" When the carving of the Ere Ibeji is completed. Often it will be dressed in the same clothing as the living twin, or be decorated in a beaded vest or shown with raised sandals, indicating ... morepossible royal connections. The responsibility of caring for the ibeji is borne by the mother and female family members of subsequent generations. Worn tunic, dust, Additional Information: An interesting Yoruba Ibeji twin figure with its well woven beaded tunic. Vest, or gown! The figure shows evidence of intensive use and good age. The Yoruba of Nigeria and of the Benin Republic are known for having an extraordinarily high rate of multiple births. The rate of twin births is one of the highest in the world. 45 of every 1,000 births(in the United States it is 28.9 of every 1000) There is also a high mortality rate; half of the twins ... moredie shortly after birth. In earlier times. New-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; theywere awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, and their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. By the 19th century the cult of the Ere Ibeji was firmly established and continues to this day. The death of one or both twins is regarded as a great calamity for the family, one which requires immediate appeasement of the soul of the deceased child. Though the cause of the high rate of twin births among Yoruba women has not been established. The cultural grieving process is well documented and may be observed in the carving of a figure known as Ere Ibeji, which both represents the lost child and serves as a ritual point of contact with the soul of the deceased. The carving of the Ere Ibeji is commissioned under the guidance of an Ifa diviner, a Babalowo, whom the parents consult in selecting the particular artist who will

Fine Ade Ileke, Kings Beaded Crown. Yoruba, Nigeria / Santeria
The ultimate symbol of Yoruba Kingship is the beaded-embroidered crown Ade Ileke. All crowns have certain features in common. Such as a representation of Okin, the royal bird that surmounts the crown and messenger to Oduduwa creator-god, and messenger between the divine world and earth. On the front. The face of Oduduwa, the creator-god who became the first king of Ife, the ancient capital. Such a coronation crown possesses according to tradition magic powers and is surrounded by much symbolism. A Yoruba ruler will therefore never look inside his crown because otherwise grave disasters will come upon him such as blindness or worse even death. Due to this belief a coronation crown will always be placed on the head of a ruler from behind or sideways to avoid that the Oba will see the inside of his crown. Since also the divine gaze of the Yoruba ... moreking is deadly to his subjects. The face of the king is covered during important ceremonies by a beaded veil, the iboju, which is attached to the rim of the crown. In this manner the true identity of the ruler is hidden and therefore his individual personality eliminated and replaced by the divine power of the dynasty. The beads. Which decorate crowns of Yoruba rulers, are attached by means of a needle(metal) and thread on an unbleached cotton. Because of the use of the needle, crown makers usually work in the palace of the ruler and will always start with an offering to Ogun, the god of Iron. The making of a Yoruba crown is surrounded by many traditional proceedings including the use of the oggun ashe which is the powerful medicine that is placed inside the crown with the aim to protect the head of the king. In the Yoruba culture the head, ori, is a very important part of the body because here is located the vital power, the ase. Due to the fact that the Ade Ileke covers this invisible yet always existing power. It is necessary that all kind of proceedings have to be observed on the moment that this ceremonial headgear is crafted. To the god of the sea, Olokun, these cr

Most Yoruba Crowns do not depict women and children. It shows some age. But is in overall excellent condition. Measures 21" high. Yoruba beaded crowns are probably the most spectacular beaded objects from Africa. The crowns were traditionally made fir Yoruba kings in Nigeria. Yoruba rulers wear crowns on state occasions and during public functions. Most are cone-shaped. With forms or features built up, then embellished over the entire surface with beads of vibrant colors. Beaded Yoruba crowns and other artifacts do not just signify high social status. Beads are sacred to the Yoruba. And only kings and priests(considered powerful enough to span the boundary ... morebetween the secular and the divine) are allowed to wear them. The crown(or ade) is the most important object in royal Yoruba regalia, and the right to wear one is limited to a small number of kings(obas) descended from royal families. The faces on the crowns represent and honor ancestors. One of whom might be Oduduwa, the mythic founder and first king of the Yoruba people. As such, the faces serve as reminders of the royal line of ancestors and the tradition of the monarchy.
