Title, Ibeji Twin Figure Carving Yoruba Custom Stand African Type of Object, Carving.Doll, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Yoruba, Materials, Wood. ... morePigment, Approximate Age, seond half 20th century, Dimensions, Height: 11.5 inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, wear in places, Additional Information: Ibeji Twin Figure Carving Yoruba custom Stand African Among the Yoruba. Who have the highest rate of twins in the world, the arrival of twins is seen as both a blessing and an omen, because of the high mortality rate. If a twin dies, an image dedicated to Ibeji, the deity of twins, is carved to serve as the earthly abode for the spirit of the deceased. See AFRICAN DOLLS FOR PLAY AND MAGIC, by E. Dagan and ISN'T S/HE A DOLL-PLAY AND RITUAL IN AFRICAN SCULPTURE by E. Cameron. Among the Yoruba, twins have special powers, much like the orisha. and are to be treated with respect throughout their lives. If a twin dies, the mother seeks a diviner's advice about which carver should make the ere ibeji to stand in for the dead child. Once the figure is carved, the artist activates it by soaking it in a special solution and rubbing it with specific oils. The mother treats the ere ibeji as if it were alive, feeding, dressing, and bathing the image. Its face is washed with soap or sugarcane fiber, then rubbed with a cloth, indigo or laundry bluing. After a period of time, the facial features may be rubbed away. 009678* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! Africa Direct. Worn tunic, dust, Additional Information: An interesting Yoruba Ibeji twin figure with its well woven beaded tunic. Vest, or gown! The figure shows evidence of intensive use and good age. The Yoruba of Nigeria and of the Benin Republic are known for having an extraordinarily high rate of multiple births. The rate of twin births is one of the highest in the world. 45 of every 1,000 births(in the United States it is 28.9 of every 1000) There is also a high mortality rate; half of the twins ... moredie shortly after birth. In earlier times. New-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; theywere awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, and their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. By the 19th century the cult of the Ere Ibeji was firmly established and continues to this day. The death of one or both twins is regarded as a great calamity for the family, one which requires immediate appeasement of the soul of the deceased child. Though the cause of the high rate of twin births among Yoruba women has not been established. The cultural grieving process is well documented and may be observed in the carving of a figure known as Ere Ibeji, which both represents the lost child and serves as a ritual point of contact with the soul of the deceased. The carving of the Ere Ibeji is commissioned under the guidance of an Ifa diviner, a Babalowo, whom the parents consult in selecting the particular artist who will

The sheath itself is a wonderful piece of art with all the beadwork on it. This exquisite sword kept in a sheath covered with beads in an amazing decorative work is a fine example of one of the most famous metalworking traditions in world history. The motifs on this sheath and the sword handle are stunning. From the well-known lozenge and splendid interlaced motifs, to the schematic human, monkeys and lizard motifs, motif of of a warrior, man ridding an ox, etc. One can only imagine the true splendor of the old Benin and even the today court of Yoruba. Though this is a"modern" reproduction, that is less than 100 years old, its beauty as an expression of the intricate, original style cannot be underestimated. Today the Yoruba are the group that is most heavily-involved in their

Vintage African Yoruba Figure of a Woman 24" Beaded Sculpture
This is a wonderful old figure of a person. Most likely a woman, carrying a bag on her head. She is posed in a kneeling posture with her legs behind her amidst shells. There a gourd hanging around the neck, maybe a medicine gourd- it's possible that this is a medicine man, although I'm not sure. The figure is fully beaded and the beads look quite old. I am not an expert and this was acquired at an estate sale, however, I believe that it is of Yoruba origin. The Yoruba are a people located in West Africa, primarily in Nigeria. I've seen similar ones that are dated to the mid-20th century, however, the beads and material on this one look older to me, however, not being an expert, I cannot say for sure. I've taken a lot of close-up photos of the beads and you'll notice that they look older and there is some soiling that is ... morebuilt up over the beads and the material looks quite old. The piece measures 24" in height and weighs 4 1/2 lbs. It is in very good condition with the exception of the aforementioned dust/dirt build-up. The legs do not support the weight of the body and it has to be propped up against a wall or other support in order to stand erect. There is a lot of intricate beadwork on this piece. Apparently. Beadwork was sacred to the Yoruba and the colors used have great significance. This is a very interesting piece of African art.

A Rare Find ~ An Authentic African Yoruba Diviners Bag Provenance: Bought in the mid-1980's at Indigo in Minneapolis. MN. Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE Ifa Divination Divination is a method of solving problems and foretelling the future. It has existed for thousands of years throughout the world in different forms. Ifa divination is a traditional way to solve problems among the Yoruba. Divination helps to explain why certain misfortunes are happening to someone. For example. If a farmer’s crops are not growing or if someone in the family is ill they would seek the help of a diviner. Ifa diviners are called babalawo(fathers of ancient wisdom) The function of the Ifa diviner is to determine the reasons that are causing a person’s misfortune. He does this by performing a ritual with the person which reveals the source of the ... moreproblem. The Divination Ceremony Divination depends on interpreting marks made on the divination tray. Divining powder is used to make these marks. Sixteen palm nuts from the African palm tree are the most important of all the objects used in divination. Palm nuts are a symbol of Ifa. The God of Divination. The diviner tries to pick up all sixteen palm nuts in his right hand. If one nut remains in his left hand he makes a double mark in wood dust on his tray; if two remain. He makes a single mark. The diviner recites a verse based on the marks made. These verses act as the advice to help solve the person’s problem. As diviners travel often in the pursuit of their profession. They frequently carry a portable set of Ifa paraphernalia in bags. The divining chain is kept and carried in a shoulder bag. It is made of locally woven cloth, or sometimes of leather, and it may be decorated with cowry shells or beads. Beaded bags are often smaller. A diviner is one of the very few non-royal persons permitted to use solidly beaded materials; these are usually reserved for the Yoruba kings. Who had beaded cushions, slippers, and gowns, and who alone may wear beaded caps and crowns. Written b

EARLY YORUBA SCULPTURE BEADWORK / YORUBA BEADED CROWN / AFRICA / NIGERIA
I'm offering an early Yoruba beaded sculpture. This was made to guard a Yoruba King from harm and evil spirits. It's placed by the entrance of the King's dwelling and sits close by when presiding over ceremonies and gatherings. This figural sculpture is covered with tightly woven beads. It's solid and very heavy for it's size. It's 18" tall and 10" wide. It has wear. Staining and shows age throughout. There is some minor expected bead loss. The tiny gourds to the left and right front are real. The central figure being carried is the King well guarded and protected. This is from the 1950's. Possibly 60's, but it could be earlier with some later bead additions. This is a beautiful Yoruba beaded piece. My camera causes a slight color brightness shift; this piece looks much better in person. I do not ... moreship outside the lower 48 states. I've inserted a fixed shipping charge. If shipping is less a refund will be provided.
