This is an original. Vintage, beaded& hand-crafted diviners belt, created in Nigeria-Western Africa(Yoruba People Tribe) The piece is 53" tall ... moreby 7" in width. The clever design and imagery on the belt features four men and women-dancing and one on a sort of swing. The diviners belt is also known as the King's Belt with each beaded color signifying a different god. The fact that this piece is almost entirely beaded suggests it is of the most important quality! The religious practices and ceremonies of Shango became the basis of Santeria when mixed with Western European religious influences, especially Catholicism, and transplanted to the New World. If anyone has any additional information about tribe/country on this, I'd love to hear what you know. Informational notes on this was very limited. This item is from a small private collection of primarily African tribal collectibles/art(also includes a few North West/Canadian/Eskimo/Asian pieces/US Art Work-paintings and lithographs) Most of the African material was collected in the 1970s and represents varies tribes from the Cameroon. Zimbabwe, Ghana, Burkino Faso and others.

Animal tail, hair, beads, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 15 inches long, Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, loose strands with beads missing, Additional Information: This flywhisk with handle nicely decorated with beads is from the Yoruba people ... moreof Nigeria. Beaded flywhisks such as this are known as Irukere Ileke(a beaded fly whisk) Such objects were used as emblems of power by the king or chief. During ceremonies the king will hold such a flywhisk he would be waving majestically. Hans Witte(2004:231) reported that" Kings sometimes hold the whisks in front of their mouths to protect their subjects against the power of their words. In a sense. Both flywhisks and scepters replace words when a king uses them to wave or gesticulate" The meaning of the design on this flywhisk is unknown. Offering a beautifully beaded handmade beaded sash from Nigeria. Has images created with beads of what appear to be two hippos and also a snake as well as what appear to be three bead work faces. There are cowrie shells sewn along the edges all around. Very nice condition. The sash has a label on back stating"Made in Nigeria" I've seen these described on various websites and listings as"diviner's sashes" and attributed to the Yoruba tribe. I purchased this a few years ago at a private sale of miscellaneous items. I don't have any information on when it was actually made but based on the color of the cloth. It looks like it has some age and I would guess it is not very recent. There seems to be a lot of information and photos available on the internet if you are interested in obtaining more info on the sashes. ... moreThe Sash is approximately 42inches long x 4.5 inches wide. There is a beaded loop on the end which would make it for easy wall display. The bead work on the sash is amazing and I am sure represents hours of work by the artist who created it. This could be a nice addition to someone's African. Tribal, native art collection. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Thanks!

ORIGINAL EARLY AFRICA YORUBA BEADED ART SCULPTURE, VARIOUS COLORS
I'm offering a beaded sculpture from the Yoruba from the Nigeria region of Africa. This is an early. Sturdy, and very impressive beaded Yoruba piece. It's firm and heavy fro it's size because of the extensive and tight beadwork throughout! It's held up very well for it's age. This is a used item. It has some missing beads and has a few broken bead strands. This is not unusual on early beaded pieces. It's beautiful and all original.in every respect! This is a traditional Yoruba beaded form made to protect the village King from evil. Sickness and harm. I've had this in my collection for 16+ years. It's a very fine example of Yoruba beadwork. It's worth mentioning that my digital camera makes some colors appear brighter than they are. This is the case with the blue and orange beads in the band that surround ... morethe base. In my opinion this color shift detracts from the quality of this piece. This is much better in person. This Yoruba beaded sculpture measures 18"tall/ 10"wide. It's a very nice piece. My fixed shipping includes insurance. For international buyers the listed shipping price is to Ebay's International Shipping Center. An additional charge will arrive from Ebay for their international shipping service. 16.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Feog4d71f%2B%3E16%3E-14b4ccc6f4f-0x113-

Lot 88, Ibeji Male & Female w/Beaded Jackets. Yoruba /Santeria / Ifa
Here is a fine example of Ere Ibeji Male Twin with protective beads. Yoruba Nigeria, measuring 10" by 4" When the carving of the Ere Ibeji is completed. The artist is given a feast and payment as determined by the Orishas. Once the figure is brought to the family dwelling, it is placed on a shrine dedicated to Elegba with the hope that the Orisha or soul, which was split in two parts when the twins were born, will now again reside in the figure that represents the dead twin. The sculpted figure is treated and cared for as if it were alive. It is rubbed in sacramental oil, washed, fed, clothed, sung to and prayed to. It is kept standing during the day, and is laid down at night. Often it will be dressed in the same clothing as the living twin, or be decorated in a beaded vest or shown with raised sandals, indicating possible royal ... moreconnections. The responsibility of caring for the ibeji is borne by the mother and female family members of subsequent generations. The sculpture is expected to avert evil from the household, strengthen the manifestations of family love, stare down death, illuminate the pathway through the valley of immortality, and bring good fortune to all who treat it with respect and offer it tokens of affection. Conversely, bad fortune and curses may be engendered if the ibeji is ignored. PLEASE NOTE: PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 4 DAYS OF PURCHASE. BECAUSE OF RECENT PROBLEMS WITH PAYMENTS NOT RECEIVED. Yoruba Ibeji Twin Figures, Nigeria, African art, Yorba headpiece Yorouba beaded
The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa. And are renowned for their copious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Among the Yoruba people, a number of greater and lesser gods are worshipped, some in devoted cults, and many of these groups produce beautiful artwork in honor of their deity. Shango, Eshu, and others are among the more prominently featured deities in Yourba art. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, with the noted exception of the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing ... moregroup among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history of human sacrifice. The Yoruba culture is subdivided into a number of cults, each identified by particular thing it holds sacred. These figures adhere to the sculptural tradition of the Ibeji cult, with Ibeji meaning'twins' as the Yoruba hold twins to be sacred, and remarkably, the Yoruba as a people have one of the highest incidences of twin births in the world. It is believed that twins are a single soul harbored within two bodies, and whatever ill befalls one twin, befalls the spirit of both. In the event that one twin dies, a frequent occurrence due to the high infant mortality rate in much of Africa, the soul(or half of the soul) residing within the other twin will be considered out of balance, causing life difficulties, etc. The parents of this surviving twin would have a figure commissioned by a local diviner, which would then be treated as would the surviving twin, and would be believed to become a vessel for the other half of the soul. In this way, the soul could remain balanced for the surviving individual. In the event that both twins were to di

Wood, cotton cloth, cowrie shells, unknown materials, Approximate Age, second half 20th Century, Dimensions, 16 inches H. x 12 inches W. x 7 inches deep, Overall Condition, good, Damage/Repair, General wear and dust on cotton cloth, Additional Information: An intersting piece depicting female kneeling figure carrying a calabash in her hands. This figure is surrouded by two stading figures holding knives on shoulders. These two figures seem to play the role of guardians. The figure comes from the Yoruba where such figures are considered a classically traditional representation of a religious devotee found on many shrines among the Yoruba of central ... moreand southern Nigeria. This is an interesting object to add to a collection. Placed in a shrine such a figure could be a devotee of either Eshu or Shango. Both major deities in the Yoruba pantheon. Offerings would be made to her leading to the bowl held by the figure. The mother and child could have had a more public role appearing during festivals and religious ceremonies as Lawal(1996) reports similar figures being carried in a large bowl by a priestess who dances in a trance to celebrate the river goddess Yemoja who has the power to bestow children upon her devotees. Among the Yoruba, beadwork is the province of the Ife diviner, something akin to a priest. Beadwork pieces like this were more likely used by a diviner. Among the Yoruba of Nigeria sculpture in service to ritual and religion is integral to life whether used during divination or masks worn or figural sculptures that are found in shrines or carried during ceremonies. There is a large corpus of Yoruba sculpture known and identified as to symbol and meaning identified to the various orishas or deities. Yoruba traditional religion has a structured pantheon of the deities known as Orisha numbering between 400 and 700

The Yoruba of Nigeria and of the Benin Republic are known for having an extraordinarily high rate of multiple births. In earlier times. New-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; they were awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, and their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. By the 19th century the cult of the Ere Ibeji was firmly established and continues to this day. The death of one or both twins is regarded as a great calamity for the family, one which requires immediate appeasement of the soul of the deceased child. Igbomina Ibeji Male & Female with beaded Jackets . Yoruba / Nigeria / Santeria
The Yoruba of Nigeria and Benin- who have one of the world's highest rates of twin births- commission these figures upon a twin's death. Because twins are seen as a blessing(although centuries ago. Twins were considered malevolent monstrosities) the death of a twin is a calamity to family well being, requiring elaborate appeasement of the deceased child's soul. With the help of priests and diviners, the grieving parents select the appropriate woodcarver to make an image that both represents the lost child and serves as a material point of contact between the dead child's soul and the survivors. It dwells on a family shrine to the Yoruban god Elegba, but it is fed, washed, dressed(when possible, in clothes matching those of the surviving twin) and anointed as if it were alive. Responsibility for tending the Ibeji falls to the ... moremother, other female relatives, and the surviving twin if there is one. Proper care of the Ibeji will avert evil and strengthen the family, as the Ibeji has assumed the status of a minor deity. These Ibejis are from Igbomina region of Nigeria, measures 11" by 4" and come with the beaded jackets. Carved mid to late 1980's.
