MAJOMBE, MAYOMBE, MAYUMBA, MAYUMBE, YUMBE) Both Congo Republics and Angola Due to the thick forests surrounding Yombe territory the land must be cleared through slash and burn techniques before crops can be planted. The land is usually cleared by men. Leaving the task of farming to the women. Plantains, manioc, maize, beans, peanuts, and yams are among the primary crops grown. These are primarily used for local consumption, but surplus is also sold in regional markets to obtain cash. Goats, pigs, chickens, and dogs are also raised. Fishing on the Congo(Zaire) river and its surrounding tributaries provides an important source of dietary protein. Men are also responsible for hunting, weaving, carving, smithing, and smelting. Women create clay pots for domestic use. The forested region of the Lower Zaire River is important in the artistic history of black Africa. Because it boasts the greatest concentration of maternity figures and stone statuary. The focal point is the vast Yombe area where numerous individual styles may be found. The Kongo kingdom influenced the Yombe who, at one point of their history, were an integral part of this kingdom. The 350,000 Yombe people are artistically prolific. They produced some of the finest sculpture in all Africa. Their statues contained the same themes as the Kongo's: maternity figures, seated kings, objects of prestige, and nail and mirror fetishes. The Yombe female phemba statues are used in divinatory practices or associated with fertility rites. Phemba figures represent women in seated. Cross-legged, or kneeling poses with pointed or round coiffures, necklaces of glass or coral beads, a cord tied around the breasts, jewelry, and filed teeth. Women are an important Yombe symbol since they are considered to be not only a nur

27in.YOMBE NAIL FETISH CARVED WOOD FIGURE (NKISI) ZAIRE 19TH CENTURY
African art African art African art African art YOMBE NAIL FETISH POWER FIGURE Zaire, mid to late, 19th century He has a beautiful deep patina. The wood is rich with age. I love the red kaolin paint decorated in triangles across the top of his head(ear to ear) and running down his forehead and slightly on his nose and highlights his eye lids and lips. I feel comfortable giving this an of age of 1860s-1880s. I'm not an expert and I rely on information obtained when I buy a piece. The notes say. 19th century. And they, were in Africa, collecting and mediateing different tribes, in 1935. That sounded about right. Its a large size too, over 27inches tall. And about 10 inches in diameter too. Its appearance is stunning and well maintained. in my opinion) The Nkisi figures serve to seal agreements, to restore health to the spirit and body. ... moreBut I should also mention. They were also used to destroy an enemy or even what we know as a sorcerer. Through the power of magic. The Yombie nail power fetish has a deep rich patina that only comes with years and years of life and has many pounded nails in his upper torso. His chest areas, and around his waist. His bottom is covered by a fabric material, and then additionally with fine animal pelts around his front. Also, horse hair flows down along his front as with braided hemp with cowrie shells weaved into the hemp flowing down as well. Its simply awesome. It also has a horn with fetish materials, seeds, shell, and maybe something else deep in the horn. It has a mirror embedded in its mid-section. Sometimes written messages or healing herbs are hiding inside behind the mirror. This Yombe carved statue is over 100 plus years old. And is a fine and also rare piece. Although. Many newer reproduction facsimiles are everywhere. This one is not a reproduction. Condition questions should be answered with listing photos and the zoom feature. Otherwise this. I notice a crack extending from the top of his hairline down the left side of his cheek. Most if not all authentic ear

The toothy open mouth create a mysterious visual atmosphere and does establish an ‘otherworldly’ quality. This is an interesting figure and attention to details are consistent with the classic of sculpture from the Yombe. The surface shows much handling and extensive use. The image of the kneeling woman is a common theme found among a number of people of the greater region of the Democratic Republic of Congo identified to the Yombe people. B Background Y Yombe history indicates a southward migration of the Mbenza clan from present day Gabon sometime before the 15th century. Oral and written accounts connect them with the historical Mayomba Kingdom. Which flourished in the 16th century. During the 16th and 17th centuries migrations of Manyanga and then Bwende peoples arrived in the area. Both groups eventually assimilated into Yombe communities. The Kongo and Solongo expansions at the end of the 17th century forced the Yombe to withdraw from the banks of the ... moreCongo(Zaire) River. Although European contact was limited until the end of the 19th century, depictions of Portuguese people in Yombe art reflect 16th century Portuguese styles, indicating a moderate degree of European influence in this region at quite an early date Primary Yombe social divisions are based on membership in one of nine clans. All clans trace their heritage to Mbaangala who had nine daughters whose names are the same as the clan that each founded. Yombe peoples more readily affiliate with fellow clan members. And each clan has its own set of social and moral rules. Historically the Yombe recognized a supreme chief, but today there are instead localized land chiefs who act as supreme judges and maintain a great deal of religious power. Descent is traced matrilinealy and each clan has a supreme leader(mfumu makanda) who is elected by his fellow clan members based on his wealth and oratory skills. Ngoma Bunzi is the Yombe supreme deity. He resides in Yulu. A place which is off-limits to people. He is never contacted directly. LARGE (26") Kongo Bakongo Yombe (Nkisi) Nail Fetish Power Figure - no reserve
Spectacular figure with nails. Horns, magical bundles and baskets- everything you could want. Large and heavy(15lbs. 7kg) I have over 250 African items and this gets the most comments. Large and impressive. The Kongo may number about three million people. Present in three countries– the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Angola and the Congo Republic– the Kongo occupy the region at the mouth of the Congo River. Numerous subgroups go to form the vast Kongo cultural complex, among which are the Vili, the Woyo and the Yombe. These tribes produce a diversity of artistic styles, with Kongo art being one of the best known. The Kongo demonstrate the extreme complexity of their traditions on major occasions. Such as the investiture of a chief or at funerals. The Kongo pantheon was small: one all-powerful god who gave healing powers to the king, to ... morethe nganga. And to the heads of cults. Besides their textiles of great renown, the Kongo had a funerary art of decorated steles and funerary statues in stone, very often depicting the chief seated cross-legged in a posture of reflection. Some of these statues were placed on tombs to aid the spirits of the dead to join the world of the deceased. Wood sculptures represent royal wives, hunters, musicians, and healers. Their postures vary: sometimes they kneel in a position of respect, the head bent slightly backwards; women might be depicted seated with the child they hold by the neck or whom they are nursing. The cheeks are round, the face, carefully rendered, is realistic. The patina is smooth, the bust scarified. Elaborate geometrical patterns occur on the pedestal or the body, where they may be mingled with fine scarification marks. The figures were used to ward off danger to mothers during delivery and to protect the health of the child. The commemorative statues known as phemba were designed for women who had lost a child and wanted another. These carvings. Generally sophisticated and very graceful, were thought to favor such a happy event. Nail and mirror fetishes ar

Old Congo Fertility Fetish (Yombe Phemba Figure)
Condition: Good overall. Tribal repair, some damage. Size: Approx 16" high. Yombe Phemba Figure( Congo) Beautiful maturnity figures such as this are also part of the nkisi group and represent pleas to the ancestral spirits for help in conceiving a child. These figures. Called phemba. Were especially relavant to women who had lost a child or whose pregnancy had ended in a miscarriage. Although there is a degree of stylization. They are touchingly realistic. This is a lovely example. The square base is a common feature. As are many of the personal details, such as a rope tied around the breasts, the jewellery and the headdress, a sign of high status. The teeth are shown filed, a procedure designed to enhance the erotic beauty of women. This is a genuine phemba figure probably around 35- 50 years old. It has been regularly rubbed with palm- ... moreoil and has a characteristic of oxidized oil. There is damage to the base and cracks in the body have been filled with tree resin. Used for tribal repairs. This is a lovely old object with a quality of quiet pleading that is very touching. A very fine Kongo phemba figure.

FINE YOMBE FEMALE MATERNITY FIGURE KONGO CONGO
96 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE This lovely YOMBE FEMALE FIGURE was collected a maternal aunt while working in Africa as a teacher in the 1970’s. It is a maternity figure showing a kneeling woman with a toothy partially open mouth with a backswept ponytail coiffure. The carving has a lovely overall shiny dark-brown to black patina and shows considerable wear to the tips of its breasts. There is an old hole on the underside of the base which does not affect the stability of the carving– it is a very solid carving. This piece probably dates from the mid to the 3 rd quarter of the 20 th century. Its beautiful patina and superb modeling in the iconic Yombe tradition of maternity figures(kneeling. Hands on lap and with a serene upturned face) truly make it worth collecting. Nganga Diphomba, who danced with during the Khimba initiation. At funerals, and for social control. Their function was to fight against sorcerers, criminals, and all kind of misfortune. Colors play an important role in reinforcing the fine drama of the mask. This use of colors reflects the complex symbolism of color used by the various neighboring Kongo peoples such as red for bravery. Male potency or black for darkness and white to illustrate illumination and knowledge or femininity, fertility and social harmony. White also makes reference to female ancestral spirits known as simbi. The white pigment on the offered mask provides a great visual appeal and a powerful presence to the mask. Stunning Yombe Ritual 'Cup' Figure
This is an interesting and unusual ceremonial figure. There is a cup or'mortar' on the figures stomach which can be used when it is lying on its back. Sometimes these were used to drink from. Either medicines or ceremonial palm wine. But were sometimes used to prepare and hold medicinal herbs etc. When not in use ritually, they would stand on the family altar as power figures. This one has a good and used patina. There are some old age related splits which appear stable. See pics. But are not easily seen in photos) There is some minor erosion on top of the head, easily seen in pic. Yombe Power Figure Carved Wood Nkisi Metal Blades Congo African
This old and imposing Yombe Congo Power Figure is 16 inches tall. He is carved out of wood and covered with some kind of sacrificial libations. The metal blades that were hammered into his surface are rusty. He is missing several blades but his magical ingredients in his stomach window and the burlap bags around his neck appear to be completely intact. While he does stand on his own. He is more stable if he leans against something. He must be handled with extreme care because of the rusty metal blades. I do not know the exact age of this figure but he is defintitely not new and does not look like a tourist piece. His primitive carving and dour expression are extremely effective. Please see all of the pictures. USPS shipping to U.S. states is $14.00 and includes careful packing and a tracking number.

AUTHENTIC AFRICAN ART OLD TRIBAL YOMBE STATUE from 1988 Zaire/Congo
The statue was given to me by one of the Belgian health workers who worked in the central part of Zaire. Where Kuba tribe predominates. She didn't know how old the statue was but thought it was authentic. I have seen statues, similar in form, but of a female and child, that originated from Yombe tribe in north western Zaire, close to my place of work. Another suggestion is that it could be Yombe funerary figure. The statue is approx. 25 ½" tall and 10" wide(measured at the base) It weighs slightly over 11 lbs(without any packing materials) During the time I worked and lived in Liberia I started collecting African art. Both traditional and contemporary, I continued enlarging my collection when, few years later, I returned to work in Africa, in Zaire(now Democratic Republic of Congo) I collected these items for their decorative ... morevalue and can not vouch that they were actually used in rituals, that did not interest me. All such items, which I am selling now on Ebay, were either purchased by me or received as gifts from my coworkers or missionaries I worked with while in Africa.

Their statues contained the same themes as the Kongo's: maternity figures, seated ... morekings, objects of prestige, and nail and mirror fetishes. The Yombe female phemba statues are used in divinatory practices or associated with fertility rites. Phemba figures represent women in seated, cross-legged, or kneeling poses with pointed or round coiffures, necklaces of glass or coral beads, a cord tied around the breasts, jewelry, and filed teeth. Women are an important Yombe symbol since they are considered to be not only a nurturing force, but also seers and guardians of the spirit. The maternity figures are carved of wood in a realistic style, rare in Africa.

AFRICAN TRIBAL ART YOMBE KNEELING FEMALE FIGURE NKISI from Zaire D.R. Congo 1986
I acquired this figure in 1986(a gift from a missionary) in Zaire- currently renamed to the Democratic Republic of Congo. He told me that the figure came from Yombe people and was used by them to treat infertility. When I received the figure it still had some vanes on one or two quills inserted into the braids of the belt but they were so brittle that they did not survive the transport. Now there are only few pieces of quills left. That type of figure. Is sometimes referred to as"nkisi" or"power figure" The figure itself, once it is carved, does not have any healing power but the native healers bestow on them special powers by applying to them various substances and objects. It is those objects/medicines which confer onto the figure such special properties as may be needed, like healing or divining, or even resolving disputes. ... moreThe figure was carved from a light colored wood which bears uneven patina. Probably due to age and substances that were applied to it, the braid around the neck and another one around the waist appear to be made mainly of grass fibers with some very fine down woven in. All the orifices are well hollowed out, probably to make room for the"medicines" to be applied. Some scarification marks have been carved on the face. The figure ends just below the knees. It is about 9" long and weighs approx. 7 oz. Please feel free to ask questions.

Numerous subgroups go to form the vast Kongo cultural complex, among which are the Vili, the Woyo and the Yombe. These tribes produce a diversity of artistic styles, with Kongo art being one of the best known. The Kongo demonstrate the extreme complexity of their traditions on major occasions, such as the investiture of a chief or at funerals. The Kongo pantheon was small: one all-powerful god who gave healing powers to the king, to the Nganga, and to the heads of cults. Besides their textiles of great renown, the Kongo had a funerary art of decorated steles and funerary statues in stone, very often depicting the chief seated cross-legged in a posture of reflection. Some of these statues were placed on tombs to aid the spirits of the dead to join the world of the deceased. They produced wood sculptures representing royal wives, hunters, musicians, and healers. Their postures vary: sometimes they kneel in a position of respect, the head bent slightly backwards; women might be depicted seated with the child they hold by the neck or w
