The mask was brought to Denmark in December 1945. Yam masks are common but old authentic tightly woven used examples like this one are increasingly rare to find. A great vintage New Guinea tribal ceremonial Yam Mask. This mask was used during their Harvest Festival when they displayed their largest yam and this mask was attached to the yam. The larger the yam- the more status you received. It is finely woven of yam reed and decorated with red& white earth pigments and they also used clay and smoke and dirt to get different colors. The mask measures almost 7 1/4" by almost 7" across. The face reminds me of an owl. This was an estate sale find. Had to do some research on this one. Excellent condition. Rituals associated with yams form the basis of the spiritual life of the Abelam. The Abelam say that their yams were given to the them by Wapikan. A creation being, along with rules for living properly. As long as they followed this path, the yams grew easily. However, they drifted away from Wapikan's ideals and he killed himself in despair. After that, the yams only grew with very hard work. The growing of yams and the year-long rituals associated with them form the main centre of Abelam life. Yams are the most important food. So many different names are used to describe the varieties and stages of growing them, just as the ocean-going Polynesians ... morehave many terms to describe the sea. A mans status is judged by his ability to grow ceremonial long yams. These yams grow up to 9–12ft long. During the five month growing season. A man spends all of his time in the garden tending his best yams. The men observe food and sexual taboos and perform specific rituals to encourage the yams. At the yam harvest festival the best yams are prominently displayed. If a yam tuber grows straight it is considered a male and if it has protrusions it is considered female. Being offered is a nice old antique yam mask from the Abelam region of Papua New Guinea. This mask comes from a collection formed in the 1940's so it is at least that old. The mask is 11 1/2" wide and 12" tall. The mask is formed of wicker like material in a circular pattern held together with braided vine running completely across the mask. Eyes. Ears, a nose and mouth have been formed abstractly on the mask, the eyes inlaid with cowrie shells. There is remnants of dye on the mask. The outer rim of the mask has small feathers inserted. Being offered are a nice pair of old antique Abelam Papua New Guinea yam masks. These masks come from a collection formed in the 1940's so these masks would date pre 1940. The one mask taking on the form of a bird with big eyes. It is very well crafted with red. Yellow and white dye. The other mask is circular with eyes and mouth. At the harvest yam linings, the decorated long yams(dioscorea alata) represent the nggwal spirits who are affiliated with the ancestors of the Abelam. The Abelam are divided into the hill country, or northern Abelam, and the southern plains Abelam, or Wosera. The Abelam area was part of German New Guinea(Kaiser Wilhelmsland) from 1884 to 1914-1920 when Australia was given New Guinea as well as Papua under a United Nations' protectorate. Papua New Guinea gained independence in 1975. The early German administrators recognized and appointed village leaders. They gave them special hats and insignia which are still portrayed in some Abelam carvings; however, there was no significant contact with the outside world until the 1930s when gold was discovered.
