Impressive African Yaka Ceremonial Mask from DR Congo. These masks were generally used by an important chieftain for initiation or circumcision rites. ... moreThe masks were typically zoomorphic in nature and were used only once. This is a rather good one with visible color. Cloth hat and raffia surround. The post in the back was used to hold the mask to the face as the chieftain danced around the initiate. Good condition. A slight tear in the top of the discus on the top of the hat but about one of the best I have seen. I will consider any reasonable offer.

The chimpanzee mask offered here is made of lightweight, light-coloured wood and dyed black. BACKGROUND The Yaka people live along the Wamba River. They migrated from Angola during the 16th century and settled under the control of the Kongo Kingdom. In the 18th century their lands were annexed by the Angola-based Lunda people. But by the 19th century the Yaka had regained their independence. Yaka society is tightly structure and headed by a chief of Lunda origin, the Kiamfu, who delegates responsibilities to ministers and lineage chiefs, Unkwagata. Young men are expected to pass through various initiation stages, including circumcision. The tribe lives principally from hunting, although subsidiary farming is undertaken by the women. Prestige objects such as zoomorphic and anthropomorphic neckrests, cups, adzes, combs and terracotta pipes were carved specifically for the chiefs and were kept by them. Slit drums ending in a carved human head were used by diviners. Many figures of various sizes were cherished for their magical abilities. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwar

Impressive African Yaka Mask - DR Congo- Ceremonial Mask
Impressive African Yaka Ceremonial Mask from DR Congo. These masks were generally used by an important chieftain for initiation or circumcision rites. The masks were typically zoomorphic in nature and were used only once.
YAKA 'M'BWOOLO' YANUS FETISH PROTECTION FIGURE #2003 ~ For African Art Gallery
YAKA M'BWOOLO/ POWER JANUS FIGURE#2003 Tribe: Yaka. Country: DRC. Material: Wood. Rope, Cloth, Fetish material. Size: 11.5" 29.2 cm) tall. Condition: Excellent. Item# 2003 Provenance: Ex. James E Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) This fetish figure(as called in older literature) or powere figure. Is attributed to the Yaka people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is figure that would generally be used by diviners in the healing and protection rituals they held. They were however used by individuals, families and entire villages too in the fight against evil, to destroy or weaken and evil spirits that were present, to help prevent and even cure sickness, to solidify contracts or agrrements between tribes people, and to repel bad deeds. The Yaka are and other African tribes are bound to a strange relationship with power figures. ... moreAs they can be an ally or an enemy. The negatives are, they can be used to invoke illness, to harm or to take revenge by those who have been wronged. They are normally used in this fashion against'witches' or'sorcerers' On a positive note, they are generally used as a form of protection from misfortune, to heal and to bring success. How these figures differ from ancestral figures is that they derive their power from ritual use and the addition of'power or fetish materials' The application and'charging' of the fetish material to the figure is carried out by a specialist, usually the diviner who will then initiate the figure for its intended use. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Yombe (Nkisi) Nail Fetish Power Figure. Yoruba Songye Yaka Baule Dan Bakongo
Superb Mayombe Nkisi"Nail Fetish" Striking authentic fetish featuring enlarged head with encrusted sacrificial material. As characteristic of the Mayombe fetishes this has an array of nails and blades throughout the body as well as a horn. Wicker cord and varied sacrificial material. The cavity that one day packed the magical ingredients(bilongo) is open after decades of erosion and handling but the glass eyes still intact. As to the age of this figure-in my educated estimate- its should have at least 75 years in civilization plus 20 or 30 more when it was active and commissioned in its village. Certainly the price doesn't reflect the real value of this piece. It measures approximately 27 inches tall. I acquired this Power figure in 1989 at a sort of antique shop at Brussels. Belgium. It was exhibited in a couple of African ... moreart exhibitions in community colleges in Southern California. Buyer has 7 days to inspect the piece and may return it if not satisfied. Old Bena Lulua Mask with Headdress. Songye Yoruba Luba Baule Dan Lega Yaka
Rare old Bena Lulua Mask with headdress. The Lulua(luluwa) people are in fact a collection of small groups whose home bordered by the larger Luba state and the related and. With whom they share a very similar culture, history, and language. Lulua masks, artifacts and figures are hard to get nowadays as their people's art vanishes with time. From my collection here is a rare, used in the village and striking old mask from the Lulua. The raffia and wicker hood from the headdress still intact. In my educated guess I estimate this mask to be 40 to 50 years old. An unrestrained and overwhelming looking mask! It measures 17 inches from north to south, not including the headdress. Stand not included. Thanks for looking!

Pigment, Approximate Age, Mid 20th century, Dimensions, 26 inches H. Overall Condition, Fair to Good, Damage/Repair, cracks in head. Neck and body, holes and wood damaged in neck and body, chips and wear in places, Additional Information: A wonderful Yaka figure standing with pride and grace! This sculpture is characterized by short legs and large body and head. This disproportional figure shows the diversity of styles of Yaka figures. Exceptionably the illustrated example has rounded forms while many of the Yaka figures are known for their geometric and angular forms. The short legs supporting the large trunk creates a certain disequilibrium that adds to the sculpture uniqueness ... moreand charm. The figure illustrated here have served as a memorial or ancestor figures. The present day Yaka number approximately 300.000 and live along the Kwango River in the SW Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their neighbors are the Pende. They have a highly developed artistic sense-and they instill beauty and drama in even mundane objects. They are best known for the upturned noses found on initiation masks and diviner's fetishes, but their art can be abstract and vague as well. They sometimes create statues of considerable proportions. Though these normally are used by diviners and fall in the"fetish" category, they also carve large ancestor figures like the one offered here. The lack of fetish cavities and added substances on this figure indicates its usage in ancestor cult. This figure would be a good addition to any collection. Recommended Reading: Bourgeois. SUPERB YAKA FETISH FIGURE #2387 - For African Art Gallery
YAKA M'BWOLO/ MAGIC CHARGE FIGURE#2387 Tribe: Yaka. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. Material: Wood. Cloth, Fetish Material. Size: 9.375" 23.8 cm) tall Item: 2386 Condition: Good. This fetish figure(as called in older literature) or powere figure. As they can be an ally or an enemy. The negatives ... moreare, they can be used to invoke illness, to harm or to take revenge by those who have been wronged. They are normally used in this fashion against'witches' or'sorcerers' On a positive note, they are generally used as a form of protection from misfortune, to heal and to bring success. How these figures differ from ancestral figures is that they derive their power from ritual use and the addition of'power or fetish materials' The application and'charging' of the fetish material to the figure is carried out by a specialist. Usually the diviner who will then initiate the figure for its intended use. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Customer Service: 561-745-1905 Powered by The free listing tool. AFRICAN YAKA BITEKI MBWOOLO NKISI FETISH FIGURE CONGO DRC EX OKEKE COLLECTION
Yaka Biteki Mbwoolo Nkisi Fetish Power Figure- Democratic Republic of Congo Early-Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Metal, bone, hide, vegetal fibers, seed pods, feathers, pigment, patina Height 35.5cm(14in) Ex-Okeke Collection. North York, Ontario; collected in Kinshasa Exhibited at our local university museum from Jan-Feb. 2010, Cat No. 50-56) Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. On the southwestern edge of Zaire and stretching along the Kwango River and adjacent river valleys live more than 220.000 Yaka, who, unlike their neighbors the Suku, Teke, and Nkanu, are conspicuous in their use of traditional charms. Among these traditional retentions in a typical Yaka village are Mbwoolo-Tchio shelters, miniature huts that protect the most numerous and diversified type of ... moreYaka sculpture. Yet Mbwoolo-Tchio sculpture is virtually unknown to the art literature and has scarcely been distinguished in exhibitions of Central African art. In Yaka terminology, Mbwoolo-Tchio images aiebiteki, figures used to support or contain special concoctions. Without these applied preparations, which permeate the surface or, more rarely, are inserted into a small ventral cavity, they are without meaning to the Yaka and merely await employment by a ritual specialist. But when charged with these ingredients, they become n'kisi, medicines-poisons" that"make-ill" kukwatn) through an invisible influence, or"make-well" kubuka) by removing this influence. Owned by specific lineages rather than individuals, the Mbwoolo pass from one generation to another through the"seizure" and subsequent cure of a man or woman who by this ordeal is entitled to become its ritual officer, the nganga. Originally, Mbwoolo enters a lineage through the theft of some object placed under the n'kisi's protection and becomes a hereditary"sickness" destined to reappear in future members. Its curative capacity can be induced only by the one who

The Kwango River area(southwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo) is the home of some 300.000 highly artistic Yaka people. Yaka or yakala means“males, the strong ones, thus Bayaka, the strong people. The Yaka society is organized into strong lineage group headed by elders and lineage headmen. The chief of the lineage had the power of life and death over lineage members. He was in charge of the cult of the ancestors and judiciary authority, and it was compulsory that he have large number of descendants. Chiefs, including dependent village ... morechiefs, regional overlords, and paramount chiefs, are believed to have extra-human abilities, ruling the underworld or spiritual realm as well as the ordinary world. A chief participates in the affairs of witches so that he can tap their power for the good of the community. On the periphery of the hierarchy, the“master of the earth” plays an important role during the rites that accompany the hunt– the primary activity of the men. The Yaka hunters perform a specific ritual under the direction of the“master of the earth” to guarantee that they procure game. The Yaka have an initiation, the n-khanda. A special hut is built in the forest to give shelter to the postulants during their retreat; the event ends in circumcision, an occasion for great masked festivities including dances and songs.

They sometimes create statues of considerable proportions. Though these normally are used by diviners and healers and are used in various ways and for multiple purposes. There are many wonderful Yaka artworks pictured in scholarly texts and their masks and figures grace the finest museums and private collections.
