NOTE: We have 75.000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We might also have different editions as well(some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions) If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Myths of the Norsemen From the ... moreEddas and Sagas by H.A. Guerber. With 64 Illustrations. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 396 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications; 1992) ISBN: 0486273482. From his exalted throne. A mighty watchtower, Odin surveys the world; a world of gods, giants, elves, dwarves, and men. Below, the Valkyrs ride forth, their golden hair streaming through the clouds, the pale northern sun glinting on shields and spears. Through the battlefields they swoop, bringing the kiss of death to the warriors bound for Valhalla, hall of the chosen slain. The myths of the Norsemen are darkly romantic. Heroic and tragic. For sheer adventure and high drama, they are without equal. Their sagas are stirring tales that are as powerful now as they were a thousand years ago. But less well known are the stories themselves, stories with all the classic qualities of a long-lost age. Valor, nobility, and a triumphant greatness of spirit. These were the human attributes the medieval Norsemen admired most. What dazzling inspiration for young Viking warriors these tales must have been, vividly told beside blazing fires on dark and frozen nights. Their preservation. From the oral tradition to the prose sagas that have come down to us, owes much to the Norse colonization of Iceland. Here the art of storytelling lived on, vivid, dramatic, and realistic. The stories feature well-defined characters, colorfully portrayed. For deeply imbued with the values of the Norsemen though they were, the intention was entertainment, the emphasis on action and pace. And on these northerly shores, the sweep of Christianity across Europe was delayed long enough to allow learned men, proud of their pagan past, to adapt the art of storytelling to the written word. During the early part of the thirteenth century. The“Eddas” were collected together, masterpieces of Norse mythology that included the tragic death of Balder; the comic ta

Rare Antique Native American Gunstock War Club/ Plains Indian-Sioux/ Knife Blade
Plains Indian Gunstock War Club ~ Native American- 19th Century ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ SIZE: Length- 30.5" Width(at wide end) 5" Thickness- 0.75" Blade Length- 6" DESCRIPTION: Fine old Native American- Great Plains Indian wood and metal gunstock club decorated with brass tacks and with a steel or iron blade. Probably dates from the mid to late 19th century and possibly of Sioux origin. The wood is very hard and looks to be tiger maple or something similar. The brass tacks. Or some of them, may be a later addition, as some of the scratches to the club's wood surface run under some of the tacks. But the tacks look very old and are at least late 19th century. The form of the club is slender and beautifully shaped- becoming thinner on both ends. Very nicely proportioned when viewed from any angle. The blade ... morelooks to be steel or iron. Is slightly domed on one side and concave on the other. It has a small indented area or'shoulder' on one side, near the club and it looks like part of an old bayonet or skinning knife. There may be faint markings on it, but if so, they are very worn(see photos of the blade- side showing shoulder- near the club end) The blade is held into a carved or cut slot in the club, affixed by a metal peg and there appears to be lead(bullet lead) pushed into the slot in the club to hold the knife blade tight. The thicker'gunstock' part of the club has a decorative figure eight shape cut into it. The handle is thinner and ends in a circular shape with a hole cut into it. Used to tie a cord onto. There are tacks on both sides of the club. Around the figure eight cut-out and along the bottom edge of the club, as well as around the edge of the handle(59 tacks, total- none missing) AGE: Circa mid to late 19th century. Or earlier. Tack decoration or replacement tacks possibly added at a later time(late 19th century) CONDITION: Good antique ethnographically used condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Blade has dark aged oxidat
VIETNAM WAR MACV SOG SPECIAL FORCES RECON HUNTING CLUB BERET THEATER PATCH
RARE Hard to find Theater Hand Made Sewn MACV-SOG HUNTING CLUB Special Forces Vietnam War Pocket/ Beret Patch. Military Special Forces Patches History Special forces personnel began serving in the Republic of Vietnam in 1957. During the early days of the Vietnam military build up. President John Fitzgerald Kennedy sent Special Forces Units to South Vietnam in a special advisory capacity. In September 1962, United States Special Forces, Vietnam(Provisional) was formed from members of the First Group, stationed on Okinawa, and the Fifth and Seventh Groups from Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The soldiers, operating in small units, created many patch designs, which were locally manufactured and, in many cases, handmade. The first insignia, of course, was the beret flash, which combined the yellow from the first group, black from the Fifth, and red ... morefrom the Seventh and incorporated them with a bend with bundles that represented the flag of the Republic of Vietnam. This flash, designed by Colonel George Morton, eventually became the insignia of the Fifth Special Forces Group. Popular among the recon teams known as"Mike Force, which is the universal corruption of"Mobile Strike Force, was the use of state names, some of which appear here. As state names were used up, names of snakes(for example, the Adder, Anaconda, and Cobra) became popular. The motto"We Kill For Peace" was almost universally used by these units. The collector will find that many of the MACV-SOG insignia were all originally hand-sewn and can be found later reproduced machine-sewn in copied versions and in many variants. This is due to the fact that many of the insignia were originally Hand-Made"in country" which were unauthorized wear and preferred by Special Forces Soldiers for there unique individuality and flare being all completely hand made. With no two exactly alike. Most Hand-Made patches were unauthorized wear which the Special Forces Soldiers again preferred, issued to Special Forces trained Indigenous Tribesman and n

African War Club. Rungus. Authentic. Human Effigy
We are offering a wonderful vintage African War Club. This is the real deal! While the origin is not known. It appears to be Maasi. This is a fine example of ethnic African craftsmanship. And will be an excellent addition to anyone's collection. A rungu is a wooden throwing club, or baton, bearing special symbolism and significance in certain East African tribal cultures. It is especially associated with Maasai morans(male warriors) who have traditionally used it in warfare and for hunting. This is a hand-carved war club with human effigy; well balanced and ideal for the use for which it was crafted. Rungus are typically about 18-20 inches in length with a long narrow shaft for a handle and heavy knob or ball at the end in the manner of other"ethnic" cudgels such as the Irish shillelagh or South African knobkierie. In Maasai ... moreculture. The rungu is an important emblem of warrior status for young males. A special one is held by the designated speaker at important tribal gatherings. There is an old crack in the handle. Can only speculate as to what caused that, but it is pictured. The war club has great patina and is being offered as is with the crack and surface scratches as pictured.

This club is of traditional shape with splayed top. Knob-end handle, honey-brown patina, and especially noteworthy for it's decorated sinnet handle. The handle is wrapped with striped bands of braided plant fiber, braided plant fiber intertwined with red and green trade wool, and a shiny, very dark brown- black animal hair or hair-like plant fiber. There are no cracks or losses to the exposed wood of the club head or handle. HISTORY: Purchased from an old collection of ethnographic items on the American east coast. I was able to find several other similar antique Western American Indian War Clubs like the one we are listing tonight. They all had a small stone head. Held in place with rawhide, and a long thin shaft. These clubs were all attributed to the Plains Indians especially the Sioux. The stone head on this 18" long club measures approximately 1 ¾” in diameter by 2 ¾” long and you can see it is still tightly held in place by natural rawhide. The handle is original and there are traces of the original paint near the bottom. Sometime in the past an owner waxed this handle, but I guarantee it is authentic. post Civil War steel Button Die CHEZVOUS SKATING CLUB
This steel uniform button die was made& used at the Scovill Manufacturing Company out of Waterbury. Connecticut during the late 1800's/early 1900's to stamp out what I believe was a metal tag that was applied to roller skates and it has the logo"CHEZVOUS CLUB" a French word meaning"make youself at home" club" as best I can determine) The metal die measures 1 5/8" wide x 1 1/2" high and the die is in reverse so I reversed the image in the photos so you can read it. The Scovill Mf'g Co. was the largest supplier of uniform and military buttons in the US and it traces its beginnings back to Abel Porter who started the original company back in 1802. This button die came out of the Scovill plant after they ceased to make uniform buttons in the early 1960's when they sold out their button making ... moreequipment. You see hundreds if not thousands of any particular uniform button but there was quite often only one button die hand made by an engraver to make all the buttons. Hence there quite rare if not unique. Make sure you check out our other great selection of uniform button dies in our ebay store by clicking the EAGLE ANTIQUES logo above then click the"BUTTONS: Maker Metal Dies" category on left hand side. AUTHENTIC LAKOTA SIOUX BURL WAR CLUB!
This was purchased at a Native American Auction in northern Minnesota. I am a Dakota Sioux member. Looks authentic to me. I have seen a few in my life time. This item was up for auction and was listed as property of Mr. Wallace Black Elk. He is the spiritual grandson of the legendary Lakota Holy man Nicholas Black Elk. I have met Mr. Wallace numerous times. The first time I met Mr. Wallace was at the Sun Dance at Pine Ridge. South Dakota in 1971. When I heard about this auction I had to attend& see for myself. This club had been in the Black Elk family for years& was passed down to Mr. Wallace. Mr. Wallace died in 2004. Some of his property was listed for auction. This burl war club was again relisted for auction and needs a permanent home. The club weights 1lb& 11 ounces. It's length is 22 inches long from bottom of handle ... moreto top of club. The circumference is 15 inches round. The handle has been stripped of its bark except for 2 handle grips. This club is made of one piece of some natural occurring deformity in tree. The 2 handle grips are for delivering two different types blows. The grip closest to club was used for close quarter and the other for a full length blow. I just figured that part out while writing this description. Cool! This is a old artifact. My guess is from back in the mid to late 1800's. Was this club is used in combat. As the saying goes if only this club could talk. I work hard to maintain my rating. This item listed is authentic! Please don't miss out on this auction. This burl war club is rare. I have seen others from the eastern tribes but Lakota! Good luck bidding!
