Old Fine Tuareg Cross- Agadez- Niger Mid 20th century. Silver. Gr 7.0(0.24 oz) cm. 7.3 x 5,1(2.87” x 2.00” The Tuareg live in one of the most inhospitable ... moreareas of the planet: the central part of the Sahara Desert. Their whole existence. Difficult and precarious, is dominated by an overriding concern to protect and defend themselves from hostile supernatural forces that inhabit the surrounding environment– the” Jinn” evil spirits, from the terrible Ghul to the Ifrit, no less cruel in tending traps to travelers) and gain the protection of beneficial genies. The same typical turban– the litham– that completely covers the face of the Tuareg except the eyes. Has the primary function of protecting the“gates of the soul” mouth and nostrils) from the Jinn. But the main instruments of protection are the amulets and talismans. Every Tuareg, man or woman, old or young child, has an amulet or a talisman: leather( the gri-gri) or silver(the khomissar, the tcherot, the herz) often contain magic formulas, powders of animal and/ or vegetable or verses from the Koran. Very often one stands out among these talismans: the upper part is a ring and the lower part is a lozenge-shaped with small tips: this is the Tuareg Cross. What is the history of the Tuareg Cross? What is its origin? What is its significance? It’s impossible to give definitive and unambiguous answers: we are in Africa. Where everything is always true and possible. According to the“official collection” of the Cooperative of Artisans of Agades, the Tuareg Crosses are 21, each of which indicates a location of origin. The only exception is the Karaga Cross which is inspired by the typical Tuareg bed. There are only 4 certainties: the word” Cross” is a term attributed by Europeans and is totally unrelated to the Tuareg language; the Cross must be strictly in silver or silver alloy. Silver is the metal of Allah. As opposed to gold, which is considered a demonic metal. Mohammed has formally disapproved all metals except silver. Rin

TUAREG LEATHER MAT - MAURITANIA
TUAREG LEATHER MAT- MAURITANIA Tuareg is a term used to identify numerous diverse groups of people who share a common language and a common history. Tuareg camel caravans played the primary role in trans-Saharan trade until the mid-20th century when European trains and trucks took over. Goods that once were brought north to the edge of the Sahara are now taken to the coast by train and then shipped to Europe and beyond. Tuareg history begins in northern Africa where their presence was recorded by Herodotus. Many groups have slowly moved southward over the last 2.000 years in response to pressures from the north and the promise of a more prosperous land in the south. Today, many Tuareg live in sedentary communities in the cities bordering the Sahara that once were the great centers of trade for western Africa. Although most Tuareg now practice ... moresome degree of Islam, they are not considered Arabic. This beautiful. Old mat was produced by the nomadic Tuareg tribes of Mauritania. It was handmade with reed and decorated with leather and exhibits traditional geometric designs. These mats were used as tent dividers. Screens, to decorate the interior of the tent, seating, praying etc. The length of the mat on the longest side is 37" x 19" not including fringe)

A good quality 19th Century African Tuareg Takouba Sword complete with its original leather and brass mounted scabbard. Most of these brass-hilted takoubas tend to date from the end of the 19th Century. A very interesting website concerning the history and development of the takouba can be found here- The Tuareg tribes are a nomadic Berber group found in the Saharan interior of North Africa. Particularly Mali, Niger and Algeria. Interestingly, the name Tuareg means"abandoned by God" which refers to the fact that they were a pre-Islamic people. The sword is of typical form, with incised decoration to the brass hilt and distinctive layered and domed pommel. The blade is of local manufacture and hand forged. The sword comes with a tooled leather and brass scabbard. Condition of the sword is very good for its age- many of these swords ... moreare without their original scabbards because of their inherently fragile construction. Outstanding Cast Bronze African Sword Antique Benin Mali Tuareg
An outstanding and very rare find. Circa 1700-1800 antique cast bronze sword attributed to west Africa. Possibly of Tuareg origins. Outstanding craftsmanship and detail and excellent patina. See a very similar example at the following site: The sword is in excellent condition. With only very minimal patina/oxidation. The scabbard has additional green patina. In a couple of small places the oxidation has gone all the way through some of the ornaments(pay particular attention to the shadow cast by the scabbard) but frankly we think this just adds to the great character of the piece. It is rock solid and the blade fits snugly into the scabbard. The entire piece is an impressive 29 inches long. The sword is 25 inches and the scabbard is 17 inches. The widest point- the ornamentation at the top of the handle- is almost 7.5 inches. Approximately ... more7 lbs. MEGA RARE AFRICAN TRIBAL ANTIQUE TUAREG CAST BRONZE HORSE RIDER FIGURE
AFRICAN TRIBAL ANTIQUE BENIN CAST BRONZE HORSE RIDER FIGURE CIRCA LATE 1800s From the private collection The figure is about 20" x 14" Heavy. This extraordinary well preserved Cast Bronze Horse Rider Figure. The basic method of lost-wax casting has been widely practiced on the African continent for centuries. While it is difficult to establish how the method was developed or introduced to the region. It is clear that West African sculptors were casting brass with this method for several hundred years prior to the arrival of the first Portuguese explorers along the coast in 1484. The technique requires a great deal of skill, involving extensive knowledge of both pottery and metalworking, and a careful attention to changing temperatures to prevent unwanted cracking or other damage to either the clay mold or to the metal sculpture ... moreduring the casting process. Some of the earliest and most accomplished bronze works found in Africa date to the tenth century and are from a site called Igbo-Ukwu. Bronze pieces created by the lost wax method involves creating a model in beeswax. Once completed. Wax rods are attached to it and the entire model is encased in layers of fine clay. The structure is heated and the melted wax runs out through the channels or wax rods, molten metal is poured into the mold, created after wax was lost- the metal cools and hardens, the mold is broken and the piece has been created. Each piece is an original since the mold is broken after each one has been cast. On Apr-02-13 at 14:03:08 PDT.
