Gorgeous Tuareg Khal Khal. An anklet that can also be worn as an arm band. Beautiful and intricate designs decorate the Khal Khal. Made of silver alloy ... moreand weighing in at 7 oz. This is an impressive, rare piece. Collected in Ouarzazate. These anklets are worn by Moorish women during the dance of Guedra. The Guedra is a ritual dance of love. Performed by women for benefit of men. It is a ballet of hands and feet: sometimes the dancer stands, but more often she squats, covered in a black weil which revels only the complex movements of her hennaed hands and feet. The henna designs focus attention on the hands and feet and are of protective significance. I included an example photo of a woman wearing a similar Khal Khal; but please note it is not the one you are buying. Please look at all the pics and ask questions before committing to buy. Thanks! Goods that once were brought north to the edge of the Sahara are now taken to the coast by train and then shipped to Europe and beyond. Antiquated Tibetan Tiger Tooth AND Silver Tuareg Cross Pendant
This Silver Tuareg Cross Pendant and most of the beads came from Northern Africa. Some of these beads were made in the late 1700's to early 1800's. This elegant Bedouin Tribal pendant was handcrafted using coin-based alloy metal. The pendant along with the selection of tigers tooth, small venetian pony beads, matched with interlocking Bohemian beads, symbolizing the vertebrae of a snake, and old Mali, clay spindle whorl beads, along with Yemen silver spacer beads and the 2mm turquoise beads match the vibrancy of the Ancient African pendant perfectly. The Tuareg encourages self-discovery and the opening of natural gifts, along with the tigers tooth it boasts the traits of the mighty tiger, and will bless the beholder with a sense of courage, confidence, might and perseverance. Giving you the strength to overcome any obstacle in your ... morepath, jumping over them with ease and recovering quickly. This combination of beads encourages us to develop and share our natural gifts and talents with those who are wise enough to appreciate their beauty. Because the beads represent a mythical meaning as opposed to a religious one, they can be worn by anyone to encourage a good aura and better karma. Stylized Tribal Agadez Tuareg African Cross Silver Alloy Large Pendant Necklace
About the Pendant: The Tuareg cross pendants are heavily stylized"crosses" made of an unique silver metal alloy native to Northern Africa. While called crosses the pendants are more representational compasses marking the four corners of the world. The unique shape of the pieces serve as emblems of individual villages that mark the ancestral homeland of particular families(The Agadez in the title being but one of dozens of villages that has become a common term for all the motifs) While the crosses are worn by both men and women they have traditionally been presented to boys on their 15th birthday with the proclamation“ my son. I give you the four corners of the earth, because no man knows where he will die. Thus symbolically indicating the transition from child to adult and marking the boys as free men of society. It could by worn by either sex or restrung and used as a wonderful focal piece for your own necklace design. Pendant Motifs: The general design and shape of the pendants has existed for hundreds of years and is thought to be a fusion of early Christian design and native animistic tribal patterns. Many maintain the cross hatching and engravings to be purely decorative. Tuareg camel caravans played the primary role in trans-Saharan trade until the mid-20th century when European trains and trucks took over. Goods that once were brought north to the edge of the Sahara are now taken to the coast by train and then shipped to Europe and beyond. Tuareg history begins in northern Africa where their presence was recorded by Herodotus. Many groups have slowly moved southward over the last 2.000 years in response to pressures from the north and the promise of a more prosperous land in the south. Today, many Tuareg live in sedentary communities in the cities bordering the Sahara that once were the great centers of trade for western Africa. Crosses are silver in color but I have not removed them to see what type of silver they are. Each cross has an approximate height of 2” The 11.75 x 16” frame is unmarked and appears to be wrapped in leather with a tribal design around the edges. I am informed that these crosses are very old and were once displayed in a private museum of a world traveler. The Tuareg people are divided into 21 tribes(kel) and each tribe has a relevant territory and its own cross. Nowhere else that I can find online will you locate an antique collection of ALL 21 ANTIQUE TRIBE CROSSES in one display. This is truly rare. The Tuareg are a group of mostly nomadic people who live in northern Africa. They divide themselves into five strictly defined social classes. Nobles own land and camels. And rule the confederations or political alliances. Vassals farm and graze their herds on land managed by nobles. And, although slavery was abolished in the Sahara in the 1940s, many descendants of slaves still work with their former owners. The Tuareg have two other specialized groups. Scholars and religious leaders offer guidance. Finally. Old Hand Carved Spoons / Snuff & Handmade Baskets (African Tuareg Tribe)
You are bidding on a collection of"hand hewn spoons and serving tools" a hand made"snuff" and basket. These items were hand carved by a Tribe in Africa known as the Tuareq or"Blue Men of the Desert" of the Sahara. The snuff was hand made in Niger out of some animal horn(not identified) Items were made from native woods indigenous to the North Africa Desert(Sahara) and the basket was made by an 80 year old woman from the Ivory Coast who had never traveled away from her village. All these treasures were collected by Tasha P(protecting her last name) who at the age of 69 in 1996 walked across the Sahara Desert the trek taking her 8 months to complete her journey sometimes in 120' + temperature. Most of these items are very old(not sure of exact time frame) and were given to Tasha as gifts for her journeys and ... moreshe received them from tribal family members when she would stay in their village. The Tuareg are a tribal people of the Sahara numbering about 300.000 they speak a Berber language, Tamarshak, and have their own alphabet. In ancient times the Turaeg controlled the trans-Sahara caravans routes, taxing goods and raiding neighboring tribes. The Tuareg wear"dark blue" robes, turbans and veils(thus the name Blue Men of the Desert) some live in handwoven goatskin tents and herd goats and camels. Great addition to any collection. I purchased these items from Tasha many years ago as she was aging and needed money for medical reasons.

Tuareg is a term used to identify numerous diverse groups of people who share a common language and a common history. Tuareg ... morecamel caravans played the primary role in trans-Saharan trade until the mid-20th century when European trains and trucks took over. Although most Tuareg now practice some degree of Islam, they are not considered Arabic. TYPE OF ART: Much Tuareg art is in the form of jewelry. The pendant is decorated with the typical Tuareg engraving work and signed on the back in"tifinagh"This unique hand carved Tuareg pendant appears to be handmade by a Tuareg artisan. It could take them hours to make one single piece of art such as this one. It is made with passion and love to the culture. The artisans are only using pure products. What is Tuareg Jewelry: Famous for their jewelry, the Tuareg create beautiful abstract forms using silver alloys, ... morestones, brass and copper. Their"crosses" worn as pendants were originally worn by men and passed from father to son. The Native people of North Africa are called Imazighen(Amazigh for singular) where we can find different dialects such as Kabyle, Tuareg, Chawi, Shelhi, Amazigh, Rifi, Mouzabit, etc. The Tuaregs refers then to the Amazigh/Berber people of the Sahara desert Algeria, they are specialized in a lot of handcrafted artifacts such as leather products, Berber Rugs, and Silver Tuareg Jewelry with natural stones for hundreds of years. They excel in it all in keeping its traditional aspect, they are never mass produced and they are never identical as they have always been handmade one by one.

Overall Condition, good. Damage/Repair, General wear, Additional information: This metal piece comes from the Tuareg. Its form as well as the combination of three metals is beautifully rendered. Please email with any questions and please view my other listings for more great deals! The Tuareg People: The Tuareg(also known as"the people of the veil" the blue people" due to their distinctive blue robes that often stain the skin blue, and known among themselves as Imuhagh or"the free people" are a semi nomadic people living ... morealong the Sahel region of Northern Africa, mostly in Mali and Niger though they maintain sizable populations in southern Libya and Algeria. They are one of the oldest documented tribes of Northern Africa cited as being the Garamantes that Herodotus referred to in his"Histories" written in the 5th century B.C. For centuries the Tuareg controlled the North African caravan routes across the Sahara from the Horn of Africa to Timbuktu and Morocco trading in everything from salt and other spices to gold and precious gem stones. More recently the Tuareg have become semi nomadic developing a somewhat pastoral lifestyle grazing cattle and goats along the shifting grasslands of the Sahel, all while maintaining their unique cultural heritage despite years of colonial and corrupt local governments that have all sought to assimilate them.
