Rare Tuareg Marabout's Pouch Sacred Qu'ranic Talisman Script-AFRICA An extremely rare Tuareg marabout’s sacred pouch from the region of Timbuktu. Timbuktu was an important cross-road for sub-Saharan trade of salt. Gold and spices, ivory and slaves. Also a renowned center of Islamic teaching in the 14th century, numerous Koranic schools flourished there, as did four important universities. Timbuktu became an amalgam of cultures. It was settled by the Arabs, the Tuareg as well as the Songhay, and to this day retains a rich blend of cultural backgrounds. It appears that the script is an Arabic translation of the Tuareg alphabet. Known as Tifinagh; all characters and designs are hand-incised. The container made of brass is covered with leather on its back. A metal rope design of copper and nickel highlights the front cover or flap, a ... morehinge allows fro opening and closing of the cover. The cover is secured by inserting a metal pin though the loop. Beautiful and old fine metal necklace possibly Ethiopian or Tuareg - No Reserve!
I don't know too much about this necklace except that it was second-hand gift to my mother whose partner was from Zanzibar and who spent a fair bit of time in Saharan Africa and lecturered in Physics at the University of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. He would have been given or bought this item before the 1960's when he left Africa to live in Europe and the Soviet Union. It may have even belonged to his mother.
