Old Used Tuareg Decorated Leather Bata Container Niger An old and used Tuareg Conical Bata Container made of leather. This type of container has its origins in Agadez. And is by Tuareg women to store small personal possessions such as cream, jewelry, or as is the case with this one, incense. Female artisans who work leather are know as Tinadan; for the elaboration of these containers they soak the hide till it obtains a gelatinous consistency. The moist leather is them placed over a clay mold. Once dry the women roll strips of leather and attach them to the dry leather, these will create a “reserve� area that will not absorb the red dye obtained from the millet stalks. Antique Sub Saharan Tuareg Double Edged Dagger Short Sword With Leather Sheath
You are bidding on an old Tuareg dagger/short sword. These are sometimes attributed to the tribal peoples of the Sudan& are also known as a Telek sword daggers. This double edged knife is about 19 1/2" long with some simple decorations to the tip of the blade. The leather sheath is also simply tooled with tribal decorations& a leather frill at the tip. The condition is fair. There is rust& pitting to the blade(we haven't cleaned it in any way) the leather straps on the hilt& sheath are broken. Traditional mats like this are made by the Tuareg people of Mali. Hand woven out of river reed and adorned with leather dyed with natural pigments in colors of deep red and soft black and brown. The patterns possess particular symbolism. Among the Tuareg the men collect the skins and do the tanning and dying. Women carry out all of the fine cutting and elaborate detailing of the pieces; this applies to all objects regardless of size or purpose. These mats are generally slightly irregular in shape.
