John T. Williams(1960-2010) In the 1880s the Williams' were among the first artists to canoe down from Canada and sell their craft to the early Seattle curio shops. We are offering three(3) pieces by John T. Williams. The 1st totem is*John's earliest known work. It is a stained 15" totem that was purchased in 1970 by the owners of"The Silver Belle Art Gallery" in downtown Seattle. Carved by a 10 year old boy(4th grader) It remained in the store owner's possession for 41 years. The Silver Belle closed in 1980(32yrs ago) We purchased this artifact directly from the store owner's Estate in December of 2011. John carved the 2nd totem in 1972(he was 12) This totem also came out of the Silver Belle Estate. John brightly painted this totem and it measures about 15 3/4" tall. The store owner must have recognized ... morethe importance of this young carver because even though the totem was inventoried, and publically displayed in her store, it was NFS(not for sale) Or, a more likely scenario is that(beaming with pride) the 12yr old twinkle-eyed little boy gave his creation to the female store owner as a gift? We found the 3rd totem on the Kitsap Peninsula. It measures 8 1/4" tall and he carved it between the years of 1980& 1990. While he was in his 20s and in his prime. It is finely detailed and was originally priced at $80.00(written in pencil on the bottom) NOTE: A well-respected leading expert on Pacific Northwest totems has contacted us and he believes the smaller totem was actually carved by John's brother. Stacey. It is our understanding that during the 1980s-90s the two brothers worked in tandum, carving and signing each others pieces. In this case Stacey probably carved it and John took it to a shop to sell. The shop owner wanted it signed so John quickly carved his name on the back. At least that's the theory! He also confirmed, after speaking with the Williams family, that the Williams' had a business relationship with The Silver Belle Art Gallery(closed in 1980)

Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo, who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. Antique Tribal Carved Folk Art Scrimshaw Gunpowder Flask with Head Shaped Stopper No Reserve Hello everyone and welcome to my auction. Up for bid is what I believe may have been a gunpowder flask. This is a hand carved piece of ox bone with designs on all sides and top to bottom. The stopper is a piece of wood carved to resemble a man's head. The tall piece on top of the head may represent a tribal hairstyle or headdress. The bottom has a wood plug. To me. The carving looks like a four legged animal with a long tail, perhaps a lizard. There are a couple of condition issues: at the very top part of the bone where the stopper sits there are a couple of very small frits. These are the same color as the rest of the piece so I am confident that they occurred at the time of creation. There is some accumulation of dirt/ residue on the bottom ... morebut it looks like it will clean up easily. I was able to scrape off a little bit without any difficulty using just my fingernail. The little stopper head suffered a break in the wood at some point. I stands about 5 5/8 inches tall and a little over 1 inch across the bottom. I wish that I could tell you what tribe this originated from but I don't know. Although I'm unsure of the exact time of its creation, this item is guaranteed to be old. This is an amazing representation of a Hemba ancestor. The carving is exquisite. The patina remarkable and the condition excellent showing only one spot on the very bottom with a section missing that might have happened in the carving process and is a natural feature of this particular piece of wood. You will notice this spot in the photos. Statues of this style date back to the early 20th century. She is 9.5" tall by 4" wide. This is one of very few objects considered to be from the"Bula" school, after a village in south eastern Zaire near the confluence of the Luvua and Lukuga rivers where several objects of this style have been collected. Tuareg tribal leather and reed mat, home decor, ethnic art, natural colors 01
Traditional mats like this are made by the Tuareg people of Mali. Hand woven out of river reed and adorned with leather dyed with natural pigments in colors of deep red and soft black and brown. The patterns possess particular symbolism. Among the Tuareg the men collect the skins and do the tanning and dying. Women carry out all of the fine cutting and elaborate detailing of the pieces; this applies to all objects regardless of size or purpose. These mats are generally slightly irregular in shape. The small ones are used to lay new born babies on. This mat measures 35" x 18" not counting the fringe.
