African tribal YORUBA brass currency bracelet, ethnographic art, jewelry, decor
Cerre Perdue(last wax) casting was a later development than to open mold of sand casting. Many of lost wax showed Persian or Coptic influence. By the 19th century bracelets were used to purchase food and palm wine. To compensate diviners, to satisfy court claims, to contract for a wife and to be buried with. The form, weight, and composition of bracelet money clearly mattered to participants in any transaction. The sheer value verifies their wide spread use. A long-long lived monetary function of bracelets was their use for wealth storage and display. The early Benin use of bracelets. Particularly lost wax, extended across Sudan, Cameroon, Mossi, Asante, Ife, Benin, Nupe Niger Benne, and the Bamenda Grasslands, the Dan and Kpelle of Liberia, the Biafadas of Guine-Bbessan, the Senufo, Bambare, Baule, Babo, Libi, Ibo, Tic, and Hausa. The simpler ... morebut more laborious process of drawing wire was used in Central Africa. This technique was refined in particular by the Kamba. Chagga, and Kekuyu of Kenya, the Longo, the Hutu of Barundi, the Bemba, the Nyamwezi, and Yeke, the Lembe, and Tremovaaland the Zulu. Casting was probably the primary method used in west Africa through Sudan. This Hausa bracelet measures 4" wide. One of many fine examples of the art of bracelet making in Africa!
African Tribal Currency Bracelet Ethnographic Art, copper alloy Jewelry Yoruba
This extraordinary Nigerian bracelet made from copper alloy using the old lost wax casting of copper and tin is thought to be from the 20th century conservatively. The condition is exceptional. No damage or repair shows it was clearly a favored old piece remaining unchanged from the time of it's acquisition. Pieces such as this served as currency but also as a show of wealth. The strong yet simple design is classic and admirable. The measurements are 3" across not counting the decorative loops at each end. And the inside measurement is 2"

African tribal nickel silver processional cross Ethiopia ethnocraphic art Z4
This Nickel Silver Coptic Cross comes from Ethiopia and is in perfect condition. It measures 17" high x 7.5" wide. It is EXCEPTIONAL in it's detail. For the Ethiopian church. The cross is not merely a symbol of Christ's suffering and death but, more importantly, a mark of his resurrection. The image of the cross is often portrayed in Ethiopian paintings in place of the Crucifixion, not only signifying respect for the dead Christ but also functioning as an icon that conveys the protective effect of averting evil. The numerous processional crosses held by priests during religious services and ceremonies also powerfully establish a space of holiness and salvation, and act as symbolic markers pointing out the way for the faithful. The exact age is unknown but less than 10 years. The subtle snowflake like design of this cross ... moreis very graceful and elegant.

Milton Fowler Gregg, a winner of the Victoria Cross during the First World War. At the time of their marriage, Milton was serving in Guyana as Canada’s first High Commissioner there. Kongo Nkondi Nkisi Fetish figure, African Tribal Creations, Congo, art, nail DRC
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION Normal.dotm 0 0 1 252 1441 Full Sail 12 2 1769 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false The Kongo people are distributed throughout the Zaire River Basin. From the modern day Republic of the Congo down through northern Angola. Unique to the Kongo's region are these'nkisi, carvings considered extremely powerful by the people, and even by British colonialists who ordered them destroyed when found, fearing that they could be an effective resistance to the colonization of Africa. These"fetishes" are adorned with nails, or blades of metal, and are the only figures in African art embellished in this way. The most feared of these figures. Were these, the Nkondi. Standing in a symbolic pose, and generally carrying an actual small spear(or two) which is generally gone by ... morethe time the figure leaves the continent, they bear a ferocious expression, intended to advertise their ferocious purpose. The Nkondi were used to locate and punish(in many cases this means destroy) wrong-doers, deal breakers, or those who inflict evil upon others through magic. They were also used as physical bonds to agreements made between people. Often if the agreement were to be broken, the slated punishment was death, which was intended to be carried out through magic by the Nkondi. Nkondi often feature a bowl shaped relief in the abdomen that would be filled with various'magic' substances(specific plants, eggs, and other natural materials) by a skilled holy man in order to activate the statue. After activating it, the Nkondi had to be'called to action' This was accomplished in a number of ways; by taunting it, singing to it, drives nails or blades into it, and by other means. In many cases, a mirror, or other covering was used to seal up the relief. These pieces gained real power when used because the people believed in their effectiveness. This petite piece stands in the common spear-throwing stance. The figure is made from a single piece of wood. Metal

BACKGROUND During the 16th century. The Songye migrated from the Shaba area, which is now the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Having waged war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo, who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. Highly stylized masks called the Kifwebe are famous Songye tribal art. These masks have grooved pattern on the face and is a common characteristic. The white paint in the grooves symbolizes peace, light and the purity of the soul. Some mask adorned with brown, tan and blue symbolizes nature as positive force. The facial elements are associated with animals. Some mask appears to have the Black whit

African tribal Ethiopian carved headrest sculpture ethnographic art, decor 002
Ethiopian headrests are often times intricately carved and other times they are very simple yet profound in their shape and elegance. This particular headrest has a very primitive charm. Serving as a pillow that is cool and comfortable in their tropical climate. And protecting their hairstyles by raising the head above the bed. Headrests are items of great personal attachment and were also seen as the seat of dreams. Dreams are seen as prophetic, foretelling important events, providing warnings and communicating messages from the other world. This lovely and well used headrest measures 7" wide and 6.5" tall. Very minor cracks and chips which are to be expected with an item of this age and amount of use. If you smell this headrest you will smell the remains of that wonderful odor of the fire that was burning while the owner was sleeping ... moreor resting near by. What a wonderful aroma evoking images of tribal life! The measurements are 6.5" tall and 5.5" across the top and 4.5" across the bottom. It's a bit asymmetrical which adds to its charm.

Wood Kasongo art is strongly influenced by their neighbors the Luba. Kusu and Hemba. Kasongo people live in dispersed villages in the regions of the Luba, Bangubangu, Hemba, and Songye in the province of Katanga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are of Mongo origin and moved to their new territory in the 18 th century where they became vassals of chiefs Luba(Samba) Bangubangu, and Hemba. In 19 th century they played ... morean important role in the region as mercenaries for the Arabs during their occupation of area. Their system of government shows Kuba influences. Their chiefs come from patrilineal clans and govern with a council of notables and are assisted by ritual specialists. Their religion is a combination of Mongo and Luba believes. Nature spirit cults belong to their Mongo heritage. Whereas, ancestor cults and initiations are more reminiscent of the Luba and Songye practices. FREE SHIPPING U.S. This Kakudji figure can be attributed to the Kasongo people. A neighbor group of Kusu, Luba, Hemba, Zimba, Bangubangu, and Songye peoples. Little is known about their art. Kasongo masks are almost unknown. Large and small Kasongo carved figures were documented, although, they are not seen often. Most of their works were attributed to the Kusu or Luba. This is a rare example from the Kasongo. Kasongo traits include: this half form carved in hard wood; he rounded head extended with a carved beard for the male;the low body wrapped with animal skin; The face with a serene expression featuring details such as: small ears, coffee-beans eyes, a triangular nose, a close mouth. Antique African BENIN Bronze Tribal Art Sculpture NIGERIAN Princess' Head
Antique African BENIN Bronze Tribal Art Sculpture NIGERIAN Princess' Head Ref: BR220213 This is a large and impressive sculpture depicting a Benin Princess standing approximately 14 inches(35.5cm) high and weighing 3.9 kg. It was sculpted by hand and cast in bronze using the lost wax process. The people of Benin(now known as Nigeria) are descended from the Ife tribe and have been making bronzes in exactly the same way for many hundreds of years. I am not an expert; it is therefore quite difficult to date this piece accurately but I believe that it was probably made in the first half of the 20th century. Of course there is a distinct possibility that it could be considerably older. There are a few small holes here and there and a couple of larger ones on the head(see photos) There is also some oxidisation. Mainly on the face. Condition ... moreis otherwise good. P hotographs form a very important part of my description and therefore bidders are advised to study them carefully and to contact me for any additional information they may need.
