Carved from the side of large old ocean going canoes, of which there are none these days, with the Islanders preferring to travel by dinghy. This example is truly ancient and has seen generations of use, as you can tell by the incredibly smooth edges where one would have gripped and the soft rounded surface of the steps. It stands successfully on its own, and in a safe room should require no additional support. These wands are intended as an object to be carried by worshippers loyal to the god Shango. Especially during celebrations that champion him, and are considered one of the most important pieces of art in the Shango cult. In the canon of Yoruba mythology, Shango, or Sango, was once a mortal king, and an ancestor of the Yoruba people. He was considered to be an extremely powerful, and often violent ruler, capable of producing thunder and lightening. This power, however, eventually resulted in his death, which came through the accidental destruction of his own palace with lightning. His followers believed that after his death. He became a ... moredeity. Wands or staffs such as these typically depict a follower of Shango. The colors red and white, sacred to Shango, often embellish the carving and are procured from natural pigments. This piece features the common kneeling female worshipper theme. Beautifully pigmented on a short, stout handle. This figure bears the traditional headdress of the Shango cult, a double-bit axe, which is large and prominent on this piece. The woman is depicted in full garb, with a cloth representatively carved over her shoulders, and resting in her hands. The wand also utilizes kaolin(white) and red pigments. Scarifications are clearly represented on the face in the carving. A fair amount of pigment, though faded, still remains on the piece, and its condition is quite good, and its patina is quite heavily encrusted.
