The figures(bateba) are recognized as living beings, which are placed on the shrines of thila and are able to communicate with one another and to fight off witches. It is believed by the Lobi that at one time they lived in a metaphorical Garden of Eden at one with the god and wanting for nothing. However. Not wanting them to be completely lost, the god sent forth thila to take care of the people. The thila are contacted through a diviner who delivers their messages, demands, and prohibitions to the people. The Lobi are able freely to distinguish between the bush spirits and the thila based on a series of factors, which at first seem quite confusing to the outsider. Sculptors. Vintage African Tribal Art Figural Stool
Here we have a real piece of quality vintage African art. A tribal art stool with a typically styled native figure in a exaggerated pose holding up the seat. In my opinion this piece dates from between 1900-1940. Now I am by no means an expert in African arts but I can see from the style and natural patina on this piece that it does has plenty of authentic age. All in very good condition. This amazing piece of ART or jewelery once had it's home with the Baule People of Cote d' Ivorie where it was made. An extraordinary bracelet or anklet made from bronze using the old lost wax casting of copper and tin alloy is thought to be from the 19th century conservatively. The condition is exceptional. No damage or repair shows it was clearly a favored old piece remaining unchanged from the t ime of it's acquisition in the 1940's. Pieces such as this served as currency but also as a show of wealth. The minute intricate detail of this piece is most remarkable! Three scorpions adorn it as well as the head of some marvelous character which extends out from the piece itself. It's nose or mouth as well as what appear to be ears hold bars of metal that imply more wealth! After being cast in the lost wax technique designs were worked onto the surface with a steel chisel. The main function of these bracelets was decoration however they retained value by the nature of the material they were made of as copper alloy could be recast into other forms.
