The skulls are in the possession of the eldest living male in each lineage, and all members of an extended family r

Sotheby’s 2007) It has everything going for it in a truly authentic piece; forward flexing stance w/hands on thigh(missing right arm) protruding chin and chest, large intimidating head w/spiritual eyes. These images were created to provide protection, and instill fear in the enemy when carried into battle. The image on the far right is a close-up taken from an original field sketch"A Canoe of the Sandwich Islands. The Rowers Masked" by John Webber(1778) from Captain Cook's 3rd and final voyage when he discovered the Sandwich Islands(now the Hawaiian Islands) note one native bearing a god image. It is believed that Aumakua worship is an ancient practice that prevailed in all levels of Hawaiian society. Carved images. ... moreHowever, could only have been in the possession of families of considerable rank, wealth, and power. Most of these images were destroyed in the 1820’s when the ruling elite converted to Christianity and declared“Kapu” taboo, or prohibition) on the worship of idols. Some, however, were hidden away and lost over time. This fine specimen is believed to have been discovered in the late 50's/early 60’s alongside a newly constructed road on the island of Kauai. The figure is approximately 12” tall, 5” wide, 9.8lbs, carved in lava, and may have originally adorn teeth and other ornamentation. Nice muscular definition carved in the chest and back. Truly a fascinating example of tribal art sculpture and pre-contact Hawaiian history and culture. In 2007 Sotheby’s gave it a“Preliminary Auction Estimate” of $30,000-$40,000 US. A copy of that estimate will be provided to the winning bidder. Expedited shipping, insured, and comes in a pressurized protective caring case. Lime Spatula Fergusson Is Massim Oceanic Tribal Art
Fergusson Island. Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea A fine Massim lime spatula. The flat rectangular handle highly decorated in classic incised curvilinear motif. Framed by two bands of triangular motif on the top and bottom; while there are cut out holes on the top of the handle for shell and seed attachments. The interlocking scrolls on this spatula bear a striking similarity to those on a carving of a pig, found in Harry Berans book‘Massim Tribal Art– Papua New Guinea’ see fig 129 on pg 44. Woolongong City Gallery, 1980. We wonder then, whether this is a classic style of motif which can be attributed to Fergusson Island of the D’entrecasteaux group where we collected this piece. African tribal currency jewelry ethnographic art collectible, Fulani W. Africa %
The glass beads in this Fulani necklace were most likely made in Bohemia and traded to the Fulani in the 1800's or early 1900's. The Fulani were one of the dominating cultures of all of West Africa but colonization put an end to their empire. Resulting in the scattered nature of the Fulani today. They value colorful beaded jewelry and body ornamentation above most African people. Since they are nomadic, the Fulani produce a very limited range of art objects and purchase or trade for materials for subsequent use. This necklace measures 18" in length. There are 5 different colors of beads in this necklace including the red ones.

Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are
Dogon Wooden Granary Door Old Lock #Alobalo Tribal Art Mali
Item specfification Type of object, Door lock, Ethnic group, Dogon, Material, Wood. Pigment, metal, Dimensions, 11/11 inches(29/29cm) Approximate age, Over 100 years, Additional information, A finely wrought Dogon door lock of anthropomorphic form. Well etched designs. Glossy surfaces, a standing figure in the unmistakeable image of a totemistic figure, hand-wrought iron components. This locked was specially used on the house of virgin girls. Used to protect houses and granaries. Dogon doorlocks range from the abstract and symbolic to representations of ancestors. Gravity-fed metal pins drop into holes in the sliding bolt, some of which also have a metal cover for additional strength and resistence to wear. Locks such as these were afixed with large iron staples through holes to house doors, which were usually plainer than the famous carved ... moregranary doors. Placing an image of an ancestor on the doorlock offered additional protection by making the door sacrosanct. We ship Worldwide from Burkina Faso. International standard shipping by Sonapost. Please. Bobo Four Horns Divinity Antelope Mask #Alobalo African Tribal Art Burkina Faso
Item specfification Type of object, Mask, Ethnic group, Bobo, Material, Wood. Pigment, Heigth, 20 inches(51 cm) Approximate age, Over 100 years, Additional information, Very old authentic ceremonial mask. It was used for decades for cultual ceremonies fo the Do divinity. This antelope mask has 4 horns. The Bobo instituted a series of purification rituals in order to reconcile themselves with nature. Since it is proper to make amends for the errors of humankind. Masks have the essential function of erasing evil and reinstating the God-given balance between sun, earth, and rain. At the end of the dry season and before the work of cultivation begins, purification ceremonies take place, using masks of leaves, of fiber and wood, which may represent Dwo or protective spirits: warthog, male buffalo with flat horns, rooster with its crest standing ... moreperpendicular to its face, toucan, fish, antelope, serpent, and hawk. All of them incarnate the forces of fertility, fecundity, and growth. The masks symbolize animals or spirits and are worn during ceremonies associated with new crops. Initiations and funerals. Among the Bobo, the sacredness of the mask derives from the fact that the divinity is considered to be present in the mask and, through it to be acting. The wearer is depersonalized to the advantage of the mask that he animates. To be a“mask” man had to erase himself, that is to say, cease to be himself, shed his individuality. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 yea

Both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the masks are representative ... moreof spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be an intermediary, who acts between the village and the forest in initiation camps, wherein adolescent boys are segregated from the general population, or may act to work against brush fires during the dry season. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes. A common form of mask among the Dan people. The"passport" mask, as it is referred to by western cultures, was often carried by those traveling away from their village, and they were said to offer protection during such times. The masks could also be used to bear as a witness during an initiation ceremony. Often carried on the small of the back, these masks rarely exceeded ten inches in length. This passport mask is a very common form, featuring the typical bulged forehead, narrowed eyes, pursed lips, and dark patina. Its exterior displays very few tooling marks, and the interior is, as is usually the case, more roughly rendered. It s
