Well known for their intricately carved doors, they settled the region of their inhabitance after fleeing persecution of their indigenous religious beliefs from the invading Muslims population to the north. Because of their resulting isolation, they have preserved many of their traditional art production methods, and are masters of producing artistic functional objects. Their art is highly versatile, and exhibits themes from their lifestyle, surroundings, and their cultural mythology. They produce a wide variety of masks and figures in addition to their famous doors, and their art has become quite popular amongst collectors. This beautiful stool is finely adorned and detailed. The figures present on them are believed to have spiritual power, and are intended to protect the contents of the room and its owner. This stool features a great number of Nommo figures, protective figures representative of the earliest ancestors in Dogon mythology. They are said to have been bisexual water gods, created by the ultimate god Amma, and sent to Earth in an ark, where they then founded the Dogon family lineages and introduced various activities, such as smithing, farming, etc. The stool is in good condition, displaying the normal age and wear-related rub marks, scratches, etc. It's upper surface is decorated with a finely hand hammered sheet of metal. It also bears a faded and worn greenish pigment on much of its surface. A very nice and uncommon piece ready to be added to your collection! Dimensions are 16.5" tall x 8" in diameter. Carved Wooden Tribal Art Figure South Africa Rhodesia
Tribal Wood Carving from Rhodesia As a family item I know this to be from either Rhodesia or South Africa. Most likely is Rhodesia. It does not appear to be a tourist item- it could be early 1960s or, and more likely, 1930s or earlier. The stabbing spear and shield are detachable and whilst the appearance could date this item much earlier I could not say so with any certainty. It is certainly a lovely example of the region's tribal art and not easy to value- the notional price is open to all offers. He stands just under 11" tall.

An African Tribal Creations gallery Yoruba Olumeye'Fowl Pot' Hospitality Bowl For a great many in the African art collecting community. This culture need no introduction. The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa, and are renowned for their copious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their ... morehistory of human sacrifice. Born exclusively from the desire to be hospitable. And fulfilling a purely secular and utilitarian function, the Olumeye bowl is a common artform that would be found in many a Yoruba home, used to store kola nuts for the enjoyment of visitors. The word'Olumeye' can be roughly translated to mean'one who knows honor/respect' and is commonly associated with the depiction of these figures in the kneeling position. The top half of the'chicken' is removable to reveal the reservoir wherein the kola nuts would be stored, and the bird itself is said to represent honor, prosperity, and hospitality, as it could be offered in sacrifice. This bowl is moderately large in stature, dense and heavy, and is beautifully pigmented across most of its surface. Though some of its color has faded with age, it is largely intact, and is one of the finer Olumeye examples we've come across. The figure and bowl are very elegantly carved, with plenty of fine detail, and the top fits nicely onto the bowl, a sign of good original craftsmanship. Selling a great vintage estate ring find. Wonderful period piece. Early not sure on age arts and crafts style, this is signed on the inside, GEA NEE, this is roughly a size 7, weighs 8 grams, great turquoise stone, the stone does have some crevasse but no loose pieces gives it lots of character very decorated. This appears to be a tribal style and made of sterling although it is not marked. We recently acquired a collection of sterling rings with many of them being tribal pieces. Original African Tribal Art Statue Fertility Goddess Congo Pende nice patination
Wooden statue of a Fertility Goddess which I inherited from a cousin who told me that in his opinion it was made in the early part of the 20th century. However it could be older but I am not an expert in this field. He also told me that it came from a missionary who spent most of his life in Africa. The statue looks original to me. There are traces of white polychromy. at the head. The cuff links and between the legs, whereas red has been used on the chest. There are a few splits of the wood especially at the head, a sign of age which you would not find on a modern copy. There is a hollow in the wood in both legs. A piece of the left foot is missing and there is some damage at the other side of the right leg. The wood looks exotic but I am not sure which wood was used.
