Often called fetishes in the West, these powerful figures have different titles according to their purpose and the owners. For example. Figures known as Matomba prevent and cure illnesses and other figures identified as nkira ntswo, represent ancestors and were used during a ritual to propitiate nature spirits.Figures are not considered complete or powerful until given energy through the application of the magical substances into the stomach cavity, or placed as a ball around the figure.Teke figures are magically switched on by the ngaa, the local ritual specialist after which they will be addressed and given offerings that through time add to the power that the figure contains. The facial scarification of vertical lines known as mabina are used by a number of the smaller subgroups such as the Mfinu or the Yanzi who share similar sculptural styles with the Teke. This magical statue comes to us from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Bateke people(Teke) sometimes called M’Teke and Bakono. These magical statues are usually made by the Fumu and Sisi tribes of the Bateke people. The helmet-like hairdo is typical. The Mabima or scarification marks are also typical as is the beard. The abdominal cavity is used to hold a magical substance called Bonka. These statues with Bonka are called Butti and are used to insure success in hunting or trading. The trunk is wrapped in old cloth, the red color of the fabric is a reference to the blood, the life force, in order to increase power, its mystical force. These figures protect and assist the Teke and when a fetish figure successfully demonstrates its power. CollectA perlino Akhal-Teke model horse
I bought too many new CollectA models recently and can’t accommodate everyone. So a few will be up for sale. This is the stunning Akhal-Teke in bright. Metallic perlino with blue eyes. He really stands out on the shelf. He is a smaller-scale model. About 6.5 inches long and 5 inches tall, similar in size to Schleich horses. He has a 5mm hairline rub through the white paint on the left front sock. Many CollectAs have a few little paint rubs like this. Other than that I don’t see any obvious flaws. He stands very firmly with no tipping or wobbling. Note that CollectA models are made of hard rubber. Not plastic. Sculpted by Deborah McDermott. A star and a snip down to little pink muzzle. A Lot of work has gone into this fella! He has been adapted from the Breyer G1 Native Dancer mold, he has had his head, neck, face and body repositioned and extensively re-sculpted to give him the very lean appearance typical of the Akhal Teke breed. His mane, tail and forelock have been removed with new finer ones added. He has glossed. Expressive multi colored blue eyes and detailed nostrils and hooves. As with most customs he is much nicer"in person" as the photographs struggle to do him justice and show his full depth of color. Seams and logo have been removed, markings are mapped. Vintage 1962 The TEKE Guide Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity Pledge Training Manual
Very good condition softcover spiral-bound book titled"The TEKE Guide" on the cover and on the title page"The Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity" and subtitled'A Manual for Pledge Training. On the back cover it says"Fraternity For Life. The book measures 6" x 9" and contains 130 pages. It is dated 1962. Early founders and the history of TEKE fill several pages in the manual. Heraldry. Helmets and other regalia are covered in detail. The pages are full of photographs of old buildings being used to house various Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternities, of fraternal jewelry and craftsmen making it, fraternity pins of course are covered and pennants and flags, as well as"house equipment" such as a large reproduction of the Teke badge, or Teke bookends. The book is full of maps, graphs, charts, statistics, rules, ... moreregulations, suggestions, customs detailed, manners set forth. One chapter is titled"The Art of Rushing" It is an eleven-page chapter. The two scans below did not reproduce well on the scanner because of the spiral binding. But it gives a very descriptive list of the contents of the book. Binding is intact and free of damage. The book's covers have a little water damage at the lower right. And there is faint rippling noticeable along the edges of the pages, but the inside pages are clean, graphics are bright, colors appear to have maintained their original hues.
