Dyes, Approximate Age, 20th century, Dimensions, 31 inches x 18 inches, Overall Condition, Poor, Damage/Repair, Stains. Fraying of fibers, stretching, worn surface. Can be steamed or ironed-I have left this up to the buyer. These fascinating cloths with their simple abstract markings are made by the Mbuti people of Congo's Ituri rainforest. Additional information: The Mbuti people who live in the Ituri rainforest of Northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Formerly Zaire, are one of the few remaining hunter-gatherer cultures in the world. Since 3500 BC. They have been famed for their rich and extraordinary arts of music and dancing, but until recently, the barkcloth drawings and paintings made by Mbuti women have been virtually unknown in the West. Originally made as loincloths for ceremonies and dances. These drawings are sophisticated abstract compositions embodying the qualities of improvisation and syncopation that are associated with the African visual and musical sensibility. Large Togan Ngatu (Tapa Cloth) made for a King's Coronation in 1967, RARE DESIGN
Large Togan Ngatu(Tapa Cloth) that. According to a sheet of paper(photo) with old typewritten words, was made exclusively for the coronation King Taufa’afau Tupou IV on July 5, 1967, was presented to official guests at his coronation, and that a similar one was presented to US Vice President Hubert Humphrey as the official representative of the US. A Tapa Cloth incorporates a lot of intricately hand painted traditional& regional motifs. The symbols of the Dove of Peace. Coat of Arms, Flag and writing across are all very common symbols. However, the one symbol which makes this quite special is the one with the rising and setting of the sun with the ships. Erica de Vries, a Tapa Cloth expert, once saw a Ngatu like it in a museum in Brisbane. Ms. de Vries is unsure if it may mean some connection to the British Navy and that it makes this ... moreNgatu special. It measures 69” x 126” 1725mm x 3150mm) and is light and darker browns. The Tongan islands are a member of the British Commonwealth and are located in the Western Pacific; often called The Friendly Isles. Tapa cloths. A type of cloth made from the past, are made by pounding, stretching and joining inner bark strips of specific trees, mainly the mulberry tree, although several species of breadfruit and fig trees are also used. Each one takes weeks to make. In Tonga and Fiji the art is still alive and well. in Fiji it focuses on the tourist industry) in Samoa a lot less so, as the art is dying out. Ms de Vries Tapa’s can be found by searching tapapacifica. Condition: According to Ms. de Vries the condition is fair and the damage is consistent with age. Tears. Thin spots, and holes, but overall over 95% intact and suitable for display using the reinforced border on the long side. Price: The price is based and Ms. de Vries estimate of value considering condition and uniqueness. But not on any provenance or associated paperwork. Vintage Hawaii Tapa Cloth 6x12 Foot - Beautiful Real Authentic Folk Art ca. 1970
My father was a Doctor in Hawaii from about 1962. This tapa was given to him sometime between then and about 19791980 when he died and I inherited it. I don't know who gave it to him. It's been carefully stored inside the house all these years. Except for a year or two period when it adorned my bedroom wall(It was too big; I had to fold it in half. Beautiful condition. It feels nice. Supple, clean. Smells nice and clean. It's a fairly coarse cloth and there are irregularities. Loose fibers and ink splots in the original design, but no holes or water damage. Take a close look at the pictures. It is a classic example of polynesian ceremonial bark cloth. Old South Pacific tapa cloth decorated with village scene
Up for auction here is a piece of tapa cloth that I picked up at a yard sale a few years back. The elderly lady selling it said that her husband used to travel in the South Pacific on business from the 1930's through the 1950's. And that he brought this cloth back from one of his trips. She thought it was from Samoa, but wasn't sure. The dimensions of this piece are roughly 37 inches tall and 28 inches wide. And as the photo shows the middle portion of the cloth depicts a hut and palm tree. Although my photo is a little too tight to completely show it, the white border actually extends around all four sides. The cloth is seemingly in good condition- no tears or anything like that- but it is sort of rough all around, I suppose because of being handmade? Please email with any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thanks ... morefor looking.

Vintage Tapa Cloth from Tonga South Pacific - Tongan Royal Family Crest - HUGE!
I bought this beautiful 1930's Ngatu tapa bark cloth about 10 years ago at a fine art gallery in Newport Beach. CA, where I lived at the time. I was completely taken with its large. Dramatic scale and the level of artistry with which it's made. it's a jaw dropper, for sure. God only knows how many Tongan women worked to create not just the bark cloth. Which is apparently a lengthy and grueling process, but the remarkable designs, too. I displayed it as a back drop covering an entire 13+ ft by 8+ ft wall in the"south pacific" themed bedroom in my guest house. Needless to say. It was always the first topic of conversation on mornings that followed a friend or family member staying over. Everyone just loved it, and you will too! To provide some context as to its size. I dug around in my old pics file and was able to find ... morejust one(not particularly good) pic where you can see about half of it hanging in the guest room. Since moving to the desert several years ago. I've not been able to find a suitable spot in this house to display the tapa, so I figured it was time to let someone else enjoy it for a while. I see that there are quite a few tapas currently offered on ebay, but very few as large and in as good of condition as this one. Many of the tapas this big are pushing $2,000! My buy-it-now price is a fraction that, and an that I'm also including the shipping for free. Finally. You're probably waiting to hear its' exact measurements. which I can't remember. I know it is 13 feet plus some additional inches wide by 8 feet plus some additional inches tall. Hopefully that's good enough for anyone considering it, because it's between 110-115 degrees in here Palm Springs for the rest of the week(ugh! and outside is the only place I can lay it out to get an exact measurement. Please don't make me go outside! I should mention that there are actually two small worn areas on this tapa that, as seen in the pics, don't take away from the dramatic beauty of this fine vint

Nice Older Fijian Tapa Cloth.
Nice Older Fijian Tapa Cloth. Description: Hello. My name is Greg Hamson. I am the brother of Oceanic Art dealer Michael Hamson. I have been working with Michael for the past few years and have now started my own company—Art of the South Seas. Recently I have been fortunate to obtain a large private collection of Pacific art here in the United States that has bolstered my inventory. So feel confident that what you are buying here is an older authentic piece of Oceanic art that is 100% unconditionally guaranteed—forever. And if you have older, authentic items of Oceanic art I am aggressively buying material and will pay top prices for individual items ... moreor entire collections. I have included as many pictures as I can- they should show an overall idea of what this looks like. The colourful icons and drawing appear to tell a story. From being in the mountains to farming- I think) the only english I see is a sign PEPSI COLA. The picture appears to have backing paper in some areas. Maybe having been mounted before? It is also two pieces that are joined in the center, this is noticeable on the back, and on the edges only. The paper/bark is thin in places. OLD BEAUTIFUL HORSE PONY MADE FROM TAPA OR KAPA CLOTH 10" X 10"TONGA OR SAMOA.
Vintage 1960s Tapa Cloth - 20" sq Tribal Battle Scene Wall Hanging Very Nice.
The cloth is in great condition. Having just one seam with a split in it, the split is about 5/8" in length, very small. Its just my opinion, take it what its worth. To me it doesnt appear to have ever been taken out of the plastic cover, I feel confident when I say the piece has never been displayed/used before. Its far to white, and it doesnt have a dry, need to be extra delicate so it doesnt fall apart feel as all the others I've come in contact with in the past. Not this tapa, it rolls up nicely, looks nice, I guess being stored in a poster tube is a good way to keep tapa nice.Anyhow, the cloth is 2" square, I dont know who made it, or where it was made. What I do know, the lady who purchased/owned the piece, traveled extensively throughout the South Pacific, the orient, as well as Africa from the late 50s thru the 60s.The scene ... moreI'm sure will at least narrow the origins of the piece. Thanks for looking. 260.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fvo%7B%3Dd70f%2B%3E260-140a055407a-0x104-

FIJI ISLAND TAPA BARK CLOTH WITH VERY PLEASING GEOMETRIC DESIGN
FIJI ISLAND TAPA BARK CLOTH WITH GEOMETRIC DESIGN Measures 71-1/2 inches long by 23 inches wide This tapa cloth was gifted to us in the 1970s by a friend who had been to the Fiji Islands then. It could be used as a wall hanging or as a table runner. I have just been looking at the back of the cloth and I could see the pattern of the tree bark in it. The 2 inch tear mark is where the fabric pattern can be seen through the back of the cloth. There are several other places where the pattern can be seen thru the back of fabric but there are no breaks in the fabric. Thanks for enduring my long description but I always want to describe my items honestly. There are fold marks on the cloth that could be taken out by someone who knows what they are doing. I haven't a clue and do not want to damage this beautiful piece. This cloth will be gently ... morerolled and shipped in a tube shipper. Shipping is free and all items are carefully wrapped in bubble wrap. Items purchased Monday. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday ship the next day. Items purchased Friday after 10AM EST and any items bought Saturday and Sunday, ship Monday.

Set of 5 Vintage Fiji Hawaiian Bark Tapa Cloth Mats - Polynesian Ethnic Art Lot
Set of 5 Vintage Fiji Hawaiian Bark Tapa Cloth- Polynesian Abstract Art Lot This No Reserve auction is for a hard to find set of 5 vintage hand made tapa bark cloth mats. These Polynesian tapa cloth mats were handmade from the bark of mulberry trees& hand painted. I know tapa cloth has been made for centuries in the Pacific Islands& I am not knowledgeable enough about this art to pinpoint the age or exact origin of these tapa cloth mats. Each mat has a different traditional abstract design. In shades of brown& black. They are all roughly the same size, ranging from the largest, which measures 21" by 12.5" to the smallest: 18" by 12" The condition of these pieces is good to very good. I found two with very slight holes in the thinnest areas of the cloth. Shown in last 2 photos. With a penny for size reference. ... moreThere are no tears. A few brownish spots which appear to be original& not due to use or wear. There are no signatures or writing on the backs. These would make a beautiful grouping of wall art or save them for rare special occasions& use them as very elegant original art placemats on your dining room table. Good luck& see my other auctions for more great deals on ethnic art.

Miller's& Carter's price guides for similar Great size and motifs of obscure origin The cloth is known by a number of local names although the term tapa is international and understood throughout the islands that use the cloth. The word tapa is from Tahiti and the Cook Islands. Where Captain Cook was the first European to collect it and introduce it to the rest of the world. In Tonga, tapa is known as ngatu, and here it is of great social importance to the islanders, often being given as gifts. In Samoa, the same cloth is called siapo, and In Niue it is hiapo. In Hawai ʻ i. It is known as kapa. In Rotuma, a Polynesian island in the Fiji ... moregroup, it is called‘uha and in other Fiji islands it is called masi. In the Pitcairn islands it was called ahu. Also known as Tapia abc All these different words give some clue to the origin. Masi could mean the(bark of the) Dye-fig(Ficus tinctoria) Endemic to Oceania, and probably the one originally used to make tapa. Somewhere in history, during the voyages of migration the hiapo or siapo was introduced from Southeast Asia, the Paper mulberry tree(Broussonetia papyrifera) The bark of this tree is much better to use, and put the use of the Dye-fig into oblivion. Only its name remained in Fiji. Tapa finally, has the meaning of border or strip. It seems likely that before the glueing process became common to make large sheets(see below) only narrow strips were produced. Tapa can be painted. Decorated by rubbing, stamping, stencilling, smoking(Fiji- masi Kuvui" or dyeing. The patterns of Tongan, Samoan, and Fijian tapa usually form a grid of squares, each of which contains geometrical patterns with repeated motifs such as fish and plants, for example four stylised leaves forming a diagonal cross. Traditional dyes are usually black and rust-brown, although other colours are

Tapa cloth is a bark cloth most often recognized as a Polynesian craft made in the Pacific islands. Primarily Tonga and Samoa, but also Java. New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Hawaii. Samoa siapo, Fiji masi, and Hawaiian kapa It is used for functional purposes(room dividers. Clothing, and floor mats) and also ceremonial(weddings and funerals) The cloth is not a woven material.
