Outstanding Songye Kifwebe Spirit Mask, DRC
In the Songye language. A mask is a kifwebe: this term has been given to masks representing spirits and characterized by striations. Depending on the region. It may be dark with white strips, or the reverse. The kifwebe masks embodied supernatural forces. The kifwebe society used them to ward off disaster or any threat. The masks. Supplemented by a woven costume and a long beard of raffia bast, dance at various ceremonies. They are worn by men who act as police at the behest of a ruler, or to intimidate the enemy. It can be either masculine, if carved with a central crest, or feminine if displaying a plain coiffure. The size of the crest determines the magic power of the mask. Mask, colors, and costume all have symbolic meaning. The dancer who wears the male mask will display aggressive and uncontrolled behavior with the aim of encouraging ... moresocial conformity, whereas the dancer who wears the female mask display more gentle and controlled movements and is assumed to be associated with reproduction ceremonies. The use of white on the mask symbolizes positive concepts such as purity and peace, the moon and light. Red is associated with blood and fire, courage and fortitude, but also with danger and evil. Female masks essentially reflect positive forces and appear principally in dances held at night, such as during lunar ceremonies and at the investiture or death of a ruler. The mask had also the capacity to heal by means of the supernatural force it was supposed to incorporate. The ritual of exorcism consisted of holding the sick man’s mask while a magician acted as if he were casting it into the fire. Kifwebe mask representations also appear on other objects belonging to the kifwebe society– grooved shields. For example, are adorned with a central mask. Measures- 13" X 7" Solid wood. Provenance: Belgian collection Origin: D.R.Congo Thanks for your visit Check out my other items or only Auction T. B Background Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo. Who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. The Lomani River divides Songye territory and marks the boundary of the areas invaded by the Luba. As a result of these geographic and political differences there emerged of two distinct social ... morestructures among the eastern and western Songye and two stylistic differences in art forms between the two areas. The Songye are divided into about 35 subgroups. The paramount chief(Yakitenge) and his advisers are the central power in Songye territory. Many of the subgroups were actually quite large. Were often spread over many miles, and were densely populated. The markets in these areas attracted numerous artisans and traders from throughout the region. At one time, Bukishi was a dominant educational society which helped to maintain social control through the use of kifibwe masks, but it no longer functions to this degree except in the southeastern regions bordering on Luba territory. The creator god of the Songye is Efile. Although sacrifices are not made directly to him. Much attention is focused on familial ancestors, to whom sacrifices are made to encourage the well-being of the individual and the family. Fine Songye Figure w/Medicine Horn, DRC
The 150.000 Songye settled in the southeast of the country have a strong interest in magic, which affects many aspects of their lives. Sculpture like this are known as Nkishi and often serve to divine the future, control one s destiny, and forestall evil-doers or to work magic and most importantly to gain the attention of the spirit world. Among the Songye and other Bantu language speakers, sculpture such as this Nkishi serves as the contact point between the spirits and the Nganga, it is where the ritual activity of the diviner meets spiritual pre

AN EXTRAORDINARY ANTIQUE SONGYE ROYAL AXE
This magnificent creation of the iron forgers artistry is a companion to an example in the Michael D. Rockefeller collection(1978.412.370) in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Clearly the product of the same workshop. It is likely made by the same hand. They are among the objects owned and displayed by a Songye ruler dating to the turn of the 20th century or slightly earlier. Both display the skills of a master smith creating forms which seem to defy the natural limitations of iron work. Each incorporates a pair of masks to the central bars, suggested in the example as perhaps miniature kifbwe masks. The hafts of both are clad in copper with a median circle and dot band and central copper tape wrap. As with the example, the present example shows the effects of years of handling as well as careful preservation. The surface condition of copper ... moreand iron as well as the age patina is identical for both. Length overall:16 1/2\ Note: illustration and details of the Metropolitan Museum example can be seen by Google image searching for Songye Axe 10-1 Additional Photos Please feel free to contact us for additional photos for this item. HUGE 40" and Important Songye protective POWER FIGURE Nkisi - no reserve
A wonderful and LARGE figure with horn firmly in the head. The remain of raffia skirt can be seen around the waist. The skirt is coated with sandlewood(you can see some powder in the photographe from when I raised the skirt to show the legs) This figure is a work of a skilled Songye artist. It is an important piece for the Songye and figures of this size were used as a power figure for a large community. The piece has significant old insect damage. But the overall condition is stable and it stands securely on it's own. This figure will have great impact in any collection. This figure has been exhibited. In 2009 portions of my collection were exhibited at the University of Maryland's Mosely Gallery- the exhibition was called"Honoring the Ancestors. Only 170 of my 300+ items could fit in the gallery) I have included photos of that ... moreinstallation as well as other items I am selling or will be selling soon. The Songye live on the left bank of the Lualaba River in an area of savanna crossed by numerous major river systems. They have a long history of migration and cultural interchange with the Hemba. Kuba, Tetela, Luluwa and especially with the Luba from whom they are said to have originated. Magical beliefs and practice are widespread among the Songye people who use figures such as this on family or village altars where they contact the spirits of ancestors, nature spirits, and where offerings and prayers are given. Power figures among the Songye are known as Nkishi while the same figure is commonly called a €˜fetish(which is now widely seen as pejorative) when placed in Western collections with misplaced implications. I have paid quite a bit for my collection over the years but will set a low starting price and let you decide what they are worth to you. The low starting price is not an indication of low value. These pieces are beautiful. Quality collector’s items. Size: Height: 40" 102cm) width: 7" depth: 8" weight: 12 pounds Provenance: I have had this for many ten years. I aquired it from

Congo: Tribal used African Kifwebe figure from the Songye.

Hemba Singiti ancestor figure Luba Songye - no reserve
A strong standing male figure with a high stylized hairstyle. This is a classic Hemba figure with its proud and elegant facial features. And strong and powerful body. This piece belongs to the category of ancestor or commemorative figures, Singiti, which are the most important sculptural production of the Hemba and central visual pieces supporting their believe and religion. The Hemba inhabit an area of hilly savannas along the east bank of the Zaire River. Just to the north of their larger neighbors the Luba. The arts of the two cultures have often been confused, but during the last 30 years a scholastic distinction between them has emerged. The veneration of ancestors is vital to the social lives of the Hemba, and they excel in the creation of male statues known as singiti. These sacred statues are housed in their own special huts, and ... morecarefully guarded by chiefs and elders. Their worship not only insures the legacy of the ancestor, but validates the power of the chief who owns it. The more statues he owns, the more respect he commands. According to Cornet, The masterpieces of the Hemba style may be grouped with the greatest works of traditional African art. See A SURVEY OF ZAIREAN ART: THE BRONSON COLLECTION.The modern-day Hemba moved into their current location along the Lualaba River from the east during the 18th century, though there is evidence of their presence in the region as early as the 16th century. They initially migrated into the Congo from what is today Tanzania. Particularly for the Hemba living in the southern portions of their territory, they became increasingly dominated by the vast Luba Empire, which had been established for centuries. The influence of the Luba was all-inclusive, and affected not only the social and ritual lives of the Hemba, but also the style and forms of art that they produced. Later, in the 19th century, the region was infiltrated by Arabs as well as colonial explorers from Belgium, who established a vast colony known as the Belgian Congo. I have paid quite a bit for m

Figurative Slit Drum-Songye peoples. DRC Among the Songye. There are an expansion of figurative styles- typically known for their(extremely rare vetted) Power Figure Statues and kifwebe masquerades. This slit-drum bears many strong characteristics of KALEBWE works occupying the Tshofa region. One of the marvels of Africa. Which mystified many early European travelers was the way in which some of the people communicated information almost instantly over vast distances. We know today. The witch doctor is seen as someone who undertakes on his own account a personal communication with evil powers-suspected of casting spells, he is feared and rejected as the most dangerous individual in the tribe. The accusation of sorcery is a serious one. The diviner, or fetishist, operates in principle for the good of all. His help is sought in times of need, for he is seen as the mediator between members of the tribe and all the powers of darkness. For this reason he also acts as healer. The various attempts to influence the fearsome powers of the supernatural through the mediation of statues or fetishes have acquired particular intensity in the regions round the mouth of the River Congo, home of the Kongo, Yombe and Vili tribes, and this

Magic is practiced throughout Black Africa. But there are distinctions to be made among those who participate in it. The various attempts to influence the fearsome powers of the supernatural through the mediation of statues or fetishes have acquired particular intensity in the regions round the mo

BASONGYE, BASSONGO, BAYEMBE, SONGE, SONGHAY, WASONGA) There are numerous mask styles associated with the Songye. Power objects and objects associated with divination are also prevalent in Western collections. In the past many Songye objects have been misattributed to the Luba and vice versa. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo. Who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions ... moreof these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. The Lomani River divides Songye territory and marks the boundary of the areas invaded by the Luba. As a result of these geographic and political differences there emerged of two distinct social structures among the eastern and western Songye and two stylistic differences in art forms between the two areas. The Songye traditionally relied mostly on farming and hunting for subsistence. Because the rivers were associated with the spirits of deceased chiefs who were often buried in them. Fishing was not practiced except in times of great need. The artistic wares of the Songye, including pottery made by women and weaving and metalworking done by men, were traded extensively with their neighbors. They were recognized as superior craftsmen, and their products were in great demand. The Songye are divided into about 35 subgroups. The paramount chief(Yakitenge) and his advisers are the central power in Songye territory. Many of the subgroups were actually quite large. Were often spread over m

Red) and in black and white. This s a male mask used by members of the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. The remain of raffia costume is still attached to the mask. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The ... moreface generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented. The mouth is most often square and protruding. If it has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. Such masks are worn during initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks, or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture. The Songye confirm this provenance by the interpretation that the kifwebe striations relate(apart from the zebra) to a pugnacious species of striped bushbuck antelope which inhabited the area. Rec
