Overall Condition, fair, Damage/Repair, chips in front and in the back, Additional Information: Made out of wood this small mask is carved in a classic Songye style with crest and facial features typical of the Songye. However. This miniature mask does have striations and white pigment on the surface. The crest is high and indicate this is a male version of Songye Kifwebe mask. Kifwebe is the name for masks among the Songye and they are used by the men’s Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe society. The mask appears on special occasions such as funerals of important individuals. For initiations and can serve to search out sorcerers. Kifwebe always appear in male-female pairs differentiated by a large head crest for the male and a rounded head for the female. The use of such small masks is unclear. This small mask was probably worn as a pendent or was part of a shrine or a ritual basket. It has oval slit eyes, a square nose covered with copper nails and a round, wide open mouth also covered in copper sheets. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. Highly stylized masks called the Kifwebe are famous Songye tribal art. These masks have grooved pattern on the face and is a common characteristic. Magnificent SONGYE Tribe Fetish Figure-D.R.Congo
MAGNIFICENT. Fine, old figure: SONGYE Tribe, Fetish Figure(Zaire-D.R. Congo) This exceptional‘Kalebwe’style(from the North) male statue with intense dynamism and vitality in expression. Is used to protect individuals or families against death and disease. Item Description Tribe: SONGYE Country: South-east of D.R.Congo(former Zaire) Description: During the 16th century. The Songye migrated from the Shaba area, which is now the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Being in war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. They settled on the left bank of the Lualaba River, on a savanna and forest-covered plateau. The SONGYE are not known for being gentle, quite ... morecontrary, they have a well deserved reputation for being tough-that is probably related to their attention to magic resulting in far numerous fetishes than ancestral statues. The tribal society is patriarchal, mainly agricultural and is divided in different groups, all of which obey one chief“Yakitenge” and observe strict rules: no grief showing, no drinking in public and no handshaking with men. Fetish figures serve different purposes: protection of whole villages. Protection of individuals against death or disease and many, many others. They are being handled mostly during new phases of the moon. Strips of metal, nails or other paraphernalia are sometimes applied over the face, which counteract evil spirits and aggressors and channel lightning against them. Three characteristic facial expressions can be usually distinguished: broad smile, sad and serious expression. This statue belongs to‘Kalebwe’ style, carved with characteristic square chin. The top of the head and the abdomen are usually hollowed to allow insertion of fetish material, called‘boanga’ These figures adopt a hieratic posture, the hands placed on a pointed abdomen; on top of the head they have usually h

Fine African Art Congo Hemba Tribal Mask Masque dogon yoruba songye senofu lobi
Old and fine wood African Hemba mask. Carved in very hard and heavy wood, good volume) and with a very nice encrusted sacrificial patina. Mid 20th Century. I love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey ... moremask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful. The personification of this being depicts the potential of nature and the need to control its excesses through the dancing of the men’s society Ibombo ya Soho masks. These masks are not very large and upon occasions are worn at dancer’s waists or kept in the house to protect the household from malevolent forces. The Hemba monkey mask reflects the ability of the African artist to characterize the idea of life and death in brooding sculptural form. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. Height: 33 cm. 13 in. Stand not included Read Before Bidding I am not a shop dealer. During initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks. Or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies' public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. Kifwebe Janus Nkishi Masked Figure Holding Mask Songye African
Title, Kifwebe Janus Nkishi Masked Figure Luba-Songye DR Congo African Type of Object, Figure, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Songye, Materials, Wood. Pigment, raffia skirt, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 24 inches x 8 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, crack with repair in shoulder. Cracks in leg and base, chips and scratches, Additional Information: This figure wears the most famous of the Songye masks. Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The faces recall the Kifwebe masks with linear incisions pigmented, the mouth in the form of a 8 and the central crests. Sculpture like this are known as Nkishi and often served to divine the future. Control one's destiny, and forestall evil-doers or to work magic and most importantly ... moreto gain the attention of the spirit world. Among the Songye, such figures generally served a common purpose as ‘objects of power’. When represented by two bodies or heads, these carvigs are supposed to embody more power than single ones. NKishi(sing. or Makishi(plural) have different magical substances that the owner, the ritual and magical ‘specialist’, Nganga considers important to give the figure power to act and the magical substances that load a figure with power are called bishimba. Nkishi also serves as the contact point between the spirits and the Nganga, it is where the ritual activity of the diviner meets spiritual presence. The age of the object can be seen in the wear of the surface through long use and the accumulation of magical elements. This sculpture would stand well in a serious collection. The Songye people live on the left bank of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Songye style is identified here by the strong body. The jutting square chin and geometric nose with the eyes and brows artistically prominent. Symbolical elements such as the horn encrusted in the middle of both heads and the white pigment on each

Luba Stool, African Tribal Creations, art, Baluba, DRC, Congo, Songye, figure
An African Tribal Creations gallery Luba Stool 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false A culture characterized by a history of war and violence. Numbering close to one million people, the Luba are a diverse ethnic group that originated from several distinct African races. Today they occupy a territory that covers a large swath of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The nation with the dubious honor of being the poorest nation on the planet. Their economy consists largely of subsistence farming. Fishing in the many rivers of the Congo region, and supplementary hunting. Artistically. The Luba are extremely capable, producing wooden sculptures and masks that are often considered among the finest from the African continent. The'kifwebe' mask popularized with the Songye culture was believed to have originated with the Luba. As were the ... moreintricate Songye stools. As is commonly the case is much of Africa. The Luba are a deeply spiritual people, who practice divination and have their own unique mythology, the practices of which are often featured in their artistic traditions. Carved from single logs of wood. The stools of the Luba people are outstanding creations, the likes of which demonstrate the fantastic capabilities of the Luba as wood carvers. Generally depicting a woman in the standing or kneeling position. The stools are supported by the woman's legs carved onto a sturdy base, and woman's head and extended, raised hands support the seat. Features are generally exaggerated. And the coiffure is always a central point of focus and detail. This beautiful stool features a kneeling woman figure providing the seat's support. With an elaborate backward sweeping coiffure. She is bare breasted. And displays the archetypical Luba carving style, with exaggerated features, angular limbs, and an abnormally large head. The features are gracefully rendered. And few if any tooling marks are represented on the carving. The piece is very stout and sturdy. And quite large, likely intended for a tall adult man. It
Exquisite African Art - Songye Power Tribal Figure In Mask Dress
Exquisite African Art- Songye Power Tribal Figure In Mask Dress African Songye Power Figure Tribe: Songye Origin: Zaire D.R.Congo Provenance: Auction Materials: Wood. Kaolin Dimensions: 62cm Tall x 15cm Wide This Songye figure has so much character and is a nice rarity to see one in its Kifwebe mask. It is quite an old piece of art and has considerable insect deterioration but takes nothing away from the stunning style and presence of this big fella. The Songye made power figures. Nkishi/ Nkisi(singular) and Mankishi(plural) to combat witchcraft and sorcery. They were benign and were believed to bring good, promote fertility and success, vanquish enemies and protect from evil. Large ones were owned by and served the community; small ones were for individual families. Adorned with additional objects, Bajimba, with magical properties(horns, ... moreskins, teeth, hair, feathers, beads, tacks, cloth, etc. they gained their power not from the carver but from the Nganga, or spiritual leader. Their carving was considered secondary to their power. Often too powerful to touch, they were moved with long sticks. Although protective, these are confrontational objects, with a warrior's attitude. We will post worldwide. Please contact for a price. We like payment with PayPal within 3 working days. A small hole in head. The expression on this figure is square shoulders and the prominent belly. The Songye live on the left bank of the Lualaba River in an area of savanna crossed by numerous major river systems. They have a long history of migration and cultural interchange with the Hemba. Kuba, Tetela, Luluwa and especially with the Luba from whom they are said to have originated. Magical beliefs and practice are widespread among the Songye people who use figures such as this on family or village altars where they contact the spirits of ancestors, nature spirits, and where offerings and prayers are given. Power figures among the Songye are known as nkishi(mankishi) while the same figure is commonly called a ‘fetish’ when placed in Western collections with misplaced implications. Whereas Songye buanga figures are dedicated to positive ends early Europeans visitors saw them as ‘false gods – feticios to the Portuguese so that today Westerners call them ‘fetishes’! I have examined this figure and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. PhD. 71821* All content. Including pictures

Yombe (Nkisi) Nail Fetish Power Figure. Yoruba Songye Yaka Baule Dan Bakongo
Superb Mayombe Nkisi"Nail Fetish" Striking authentic fetish featuring enlarged head with encrusted sacrificial material. As characteristic of the Mayombe fetishes this has an array of nails and blades throughout the body as well as a horn. Wicker cord and varied sacrificial material. The cavity that one day packed the magical ingredients(bilongo) is open after decades of erosion and handling but the glass eyes still intact. As to the age of this figure-in my educated estimate- its should have at least 75 years in civilization plus 20 or 30 more when it was active and commissioned in its village. Certainly the price doesn't reflect the real value of this piece. It measures approximately 27 inches tall. I acquired this Power figure in 1989 at a sort of antique shop at Brussels. Belgium. It was exhibited in a couple of African ... moreart exhibitions in community colleges in Southern California. Buyer has 7 days to inspect the piece and may return it if not satisfied.
