The Songye migrated from the Shaba area, which is now the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Having waged war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo, who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. Highly stylized masks called the Kifwebe are famous Songye tribal art. These masks have grooved pattern on the face and is a common characteristic. Whereas Songye buanga figures are dedicated to positive ends. Early Europeans visitors saw them as âfalse gods â feticios to the Portuguese so that today Westerners call them âfetishesâ! The Songye live on the left bank of the Lualaba River in an area of savanna crossed by numerous major river systems. They have a long history of migration and cultural interchange with the Hemba. Kuba, Tetela, Luluwa and especially with the Luba from whom they are said to have originated. Magical beliefs and practice are widespread among the Songye people who use figures such as this on family or village altars where they contact the spirits of ancestors, nature spirits, and where offerings and prayers are given. BACKGROUND The Suku people have lived in the South-Western part of the Democratic Republic of Congo– Formerly Zaire– since the 16th century. With the arrival of the Yaka and the Lunda in their territory. They were split into two autonomous groups. Their main economic resource is farming, but occasionally communal hunts are organized. Stylistically, their sculptures are characterized by an enlarged head with an almond-shaped mouth, a triangular nose and coffee-bean eyes, all set under elaborate coiffure. The figure is carved in classic Songye style with a strongly defined body and the well-known Songye jutting chin and geometric nose with the eyes and brows sculpturally prominent. These details as well as the ringed neck identify this figure with the northern Songye in their localized style known as Kalebwe. This is a great sculpture and a rare female figure of its kind. It would add a unique piece in a collection. Many groups in the greater Congo area. And elsewhere, use art to meet the contingencies of everyday life through the activities of the local priest or diviner known as the Nganga. These individuals of great spiritual strength and inductive abilities use the rituals, secret formulae and sculptures to heal and prevent the activities of malevolent forces. This magnificent axe was originally one of several chiefly accoutrements owned and displayed by a Songye ruler in what is today southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Its complex form and construction indicate that it was made by a master smith. The artisan worked with hot. Malleable iron to create the axe head's overall form—its angular corners, curving blade, and twisting metal struts. Once it had cooled, he used a hammer and chisel to decorate the blade surface with incised lines and circles. The faces that appear on both sides of the axe head were produced using this technique. It is an important piece ... morefor the Songye for it was used as a power figure for a large community. The piece has severe old insect damage. But the overall condition is stable. Sculptural, this figure has a strong Songye character and would have a real impact in any collection. The Songye live on the left bank of the Lualaba River in an area of savanna crossed by numerous major river systems. They have a long history of migration and cultural interchange with the Hemba. Kuba, Tetela, Luluwa and especially with the Luba from whom they are said to have originated. Magical beliefs and practice are widespread among the Songye people who use figures such as this on family or village altars where they contact the spirits of ancestors, nature spirits, and where offerings and prayers are given. Power figures among the Songye are known as Nkishi while the same figure is commonly called a âfetishâ when placed in Western collections with misplaced implications. Whereas Songye Nkishi figures are dedicated to positive ends early Europeans visitors saw them as âfalse gods â feticios to the Portuguese so that today Westerners call them âfetishesâ! 96 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE This elongated wooden Songye(Songe) Nkisi Female Fetish. With its hands held to the abdomen, stands on a domed base. A horn. Which would have contained magical substances in the past, is inserted at the crest of its head over an elongated face. Three brass tacks. Now partially deteriorated, have been driven into the forehead and bridge of the nose to counteract evil spirits and aggressors and to channel lightning against these adversaries. Fetishes such as this were made to protect individual owners from sickness and death. This carving has a dark brown patina with significant traces of kaolin and reddish pigmentation. There are a few vertical age cracks which run over parts of the figures face as well as over its left shoulder and down to the base. These are hardly discernable and may have been ... moretribal repaired in the past. The animal horn probably became loose and fell out of its receptacle in the past but this has been reattached with glue. The Songye(Songe) people live in the southern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo(formerly Zaire) and are governed by a central chief or authority figure responsible for enforcing special laws on this tribal group. The Songye(Songe) people are noted for their sculptural creativity. Usually done in service of their many secret societies. Although t his piece is part of my family’s private ethnographic collection which was started by my grandfather around 1910 or 1915. It is an important piece for the Songye for it was used as a power figure for a large community. The piece has s severe old insect damage. But the overall condition is stable. Sculptural, this figure has a strong Songye character and would have a real impact in any collection. The Songye live on the left bank of the Lualaba River in an area of savanna crossed by numerous major river systems. They have a long history of migration and cultural interchange with the Hemba. Kuba, Tetela, Luluwa and especially with the Luba from whom they are said to have originated. Magical beliefs and practice are widespread among the Songye people who use figures such as this on family or village altars where they contact the spirits of ancestors, nature spirits, and where offerings and prayers are given. I love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It measures 12" tall This is from a very extensive collection of African artifacts. The person that created this collection lived in Africa in the fifties and use to hire people to go the surrounding areas and tribes and purchased items right from the original owners. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo, who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland.
