BACKGROUND The Luba empire was founded in 16th century in the Upemba depression by King Kongolo and rapidly expanded the kingdom to encompass all the territories on the upper left bank of the Lualaba River. DRC. Luba artists created numerous objects that related to the royal court activities. Prestige objects were usually decorated with female figures which are omnipresent in Luba art. As the Luba Empire extends over a vast territory, there are a large number of stylistic variations. Aside from masks and statues everyday objects were also produced. Some of the prestige objects are anthropomorphic caryatid stool, bow-stand, spear, staff, pipe, axe, neck-rest and terracotta. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobbin or heddle- pulley which is after all only a functional object for the purpose of weaving seemed to me then and today as beautiful as a Greek goddess. The fetish moved me as deeply as the bobbin by its silent tragic dignity and its air of profound meditation. GUARANTEE AUT

The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. Such masks are worn during initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture. The Songye confirm this provenance by the interpretation that the kifwebe striations relate(apart from the zebra) to a pugnacious species of striped bushbuck antelope which inhabited the area. Large Old Songye Kifwebe African Wood Mask Belgian Congo Carved
I acquired this great tribal mask at an estate sale. The man who it belonged to had many artifacts from extensive travel in Africa in the 1950's though the 1980's. This mask is large. Measuring 16" long and 12" wide. I have been told that it is a Kifwebe mask that came from the Belgian Congo. It is wooden, hand carved. It would display nicely. I am not an expert by any means on African art, so please ask questions prior to bidding. I will be happy to answer!

Small Antique Songye Fetish. Powerful. Worn Smooth with Age
This is a lovely little Songye fetish figure. All the edges are rounded and smooth with age and it has a wonderful patina. The Songye used many different fetishes and amulets to ensure their success. Fertility, and wealth and to protect them against hostile forces. The hollow space in the fetish would be filled with magic ingredients crumbled and mixed into a paste. When a member of the tribe traveled, he had a new fetish made which he carried with him(hence the small size and the string around the figure's neck) The figure has an age-related crack(see last two pics) which is not very deep and does not detract at all from its appearance. Measurements: 4 inches high x 2.5 inches x 2.5 inches(10 cm x 6.5 cm x 6.5 cm)

The Songye created a sculptural style of intense dynamism and vitality. The works of Songye craftsmen are often used within the secret societies during various ceremonies. They produced a large number of figures belonging to the fetishist. Who manipulates them during the rituals of the full moon. Songye fetish figures vary in size from 4” to 60” They are usually male and stand on a circular base. Strips of metal, nails or other paraphernalia are sometimes applied over the face, which ... morecounteract evil spirits and aggressors and channel lightings against them. The top of the head and the abdomen are usually hollowed to allow insertion of fetish material, called boanga. These figures adopt a hieratic posture, the hands placed on a pointed abdomen; on top of the head they have a horn or feathers reinforcing a disquieting appearance. The fetishist would make the boanga with magic ingredients, which he crumbled and mixed, thus obtaining a paste that was kept in an antelope horn hung from the roof of the house. The magic ingredients consist of a wide variety of animal, vegetal, mineral and human substances that activate and bring into play benevolent ancestral spirits. The face is often covered with nails, a reminder of smallpox. The style of Songye fetishes, carved from wood or horn and decorated with shells, is not as realistic as the classic Luba style, and their integration of non-naturalistic, more geometric forms is impressive. The figures are used to ensure their success, fertility, and wealth and to protect people against hostile forces as lightning, as well as against diseases such as smallpox, very common in that region. Fantastic Ancient Songye Torso Figure, Kifwebe 'Mask'
Although the legs have eroded away. This torso with its Kifwebe masked face is a fine and powerful sculpture. It shows its age in the patina. The'magic' medicine(bilongo) receptacle in the stomach is now largely empty, indicating it has done its job and was'decommisioned' afterwards. 26cm Apart from the leg erosion. The condition is good with normal age and use related wear. The custom stand is not the best quality and I would have replaced it if space at home(and my wife! didn't dictate I sell. Africa Songye Warrior Axe 19th Century
Description Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge This is an excellent example of the African Warrior Songye Axe. The Axe is in very nice condition with no visible flaws. It is as I acquired it about 40 years ago from a collector of Africa artifacts. I don't know the correct terminology for this axe as I have very little knowledge in African items. I bought it because I liked it. It has been displayed in my home since I purchased it. I am downsizing and along with many other items must go. I have had its authenticity verified and guarantee it. The axe overall is 14 1/4 inches. The exposed blade is about 4 1/4 inches long. The actual hand forged blade is about 3 1/4 inches wide, the blade has what I would describe as beveled edges, which I believe is for rigidity and strength. It is dark and ... morerough which I believe is from the original forging. The blades edge is clean and quite sharp, although I have never sharpened it. The wood is very good(no cracks) and somewhat polished from carrying with a crescent moon symbol on each side. The statements I make herein are to the best of my knowledge, if a viewer can add to this information please do not hesitate to email me. Please ask any question you might have prior to bidding. NKishi(sing. or Makishi(plural) have different magical substances that the owner, the ritual and magical ‘specialist’, Nganga considers important to give the figure power to act and the magical substances that load a figure with power are called bishimba.Nkishi also serves as the contact point between the spirits and the Nganga, it is where the ritual activity of the diviner meets spiritual presence. The Songye migrated from the Shaba area, which is now the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Having waged war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo, who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. Highly stylized masks called the Kifwebe are famous Songye tribal art. These masks have grooved pattern on the face and is a common characteristic. The white paint in the grooves symbolizes peac

Fine Songye Shrine Fetish, DRC. Great patina.
Songye fetish figures are usually male and stand on a circular base. Strips of metal. Nails or other paraphernalia are sometimes applied over the face, which counteract evil spirits and aggressors and channel lightings against them. The top of the head and the abdomen are usually hollowed to allow insertion of fetish material, called boanga. These figures adopt a hieratic posture. The hands placed on a pointed abdomen; on top of the head is a horn or feathers reinforcing a disquieting appearance. These horns are filled with magic ingredients consisting of a wide variety of animal, vegetable, mineral and human substances that activate and bring into play benevolent ancestral spirits. The face is often covered with nails or metal circular chips, a reminder of smallpox. The figures are used to ensure their success, fertility, wealth and protection ... moreagainst hostile forces as well as diseases. While smaller figures of this type were kept and consulted by individuals, larger ones were responsible for ensuring the welfare of an entire community. This piece was obtained in 2013. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. This is a female character recognized by the abscence of a central crest. According to Hersak(1985: 168) the striated masks, or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture. Songye Kifwebe Mask Male DR Congo African 12.5 Inch
Title, Songye Kifwebe Mask Male DR Congo African 12.5 Inch Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of the Congo, People, Songye, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, Mid 20th century, Dimensions, 12.5 inches H. x 5.5 inches W. x 7.25 inches d, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, cracks in crest. Along the nose, and in chin, chips with repair on top of crest, cracks with repair on one side of the face, crack inside one eye, Additional Information: An interesting small Songye Kifwebe mask with large crest and striations painted in black and white. This s a male mask used by members of the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The face generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented. The mouth is most often square and protruding. If ... moreit has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. Such masks are worn during initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. The Songye confirm this provenance by the interpretation that the kifwebe striations relate(apart from the zebra) to a pugnacious species of striped bushbuck antelope which inhabited the area. Power figures among the Songye are known as buanga while the same figure is commonly called a ‘fetish’ when placed in Western collections with misplaced implications. Whereas Songye buanga figures are dedicated to positive ends early Europeans visitors saw them as ‘false gods – feticios to the Portuguese so that today Westerners call them ‘fetishes’! Congo: Large Tribal used African Grain Door from the Songye.
Tribal used Expressive african Grain Door from the Songye. Congo. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With cut in ornaments. Size: 85cm x 33 cm. Among the Songye the kifwebe society functions as the organ of control in the service of the ruling elite. It helps the authorities maintain their economic and political power. The kifwebe masks count as some of this society’s most powerful collaborators. It is said of these masks that their place is beyond the normal order of the universe. The kifwebe masks embodied supernatural forces and formerly functioned as agents of the ruling elite. The distinctive head in the center of this magnificent shield is modeled after the kifwebe mask form of the eastern Songye. Such shields were hung on the walls of the huts where the kifwebe masks were stored. The shields served a symbolic purpose. Nkisi Nail Fetish Bakongo, Songye, Kongo, Kuba, or Luba Sculpture Congo Africa
This Nkisi is in overall excellent condition. Glass body cavity. Natural fiber grass rope woven between the nails, glass eyes. All indications of a well made Nkisi from the Congo. There are a few spots on the back of the head where the lacquer has scratched off and the base can be a little wobbly but it stands on its own with no problems. Overall. It's in excellent condition and well crafted.
GENUINE VERY OLD CARVED WOODEN TRIBAL FIGURE - SONGYE CONGO - UNUSUAL EXAMPLE
THIS LOOKS LIKE A VERY OLD CARVED WOODEN TRIBAL FIGURE. Probably from the 1800s or so, info welcome, someone has put a sticker on the base with some info. it measures about 29cm high, something looks to be broken off his back, unusual smooth hollow on one arm and one side of the bum, also hollow on the front of the base, these may be old damages as it has various other scuffs and cracks as expected, still a very nice looking piece worthy of further research. photos dont do it any justice. it came with more rare pieces ill be listing. BEAUTIFUL Old Museum Quality Songye Tribal Hatchet African Art Antique
Very beautiful antique African tribal hatchet probably from the Songye tribe with display stand. What is unique about this piece are the faces etched on both sides of the hatchet. There are metal tacks stuck into the piece just below each etching apparently for some reason if not just for decoration. The height is 14" and the width from the edge of the blade is 6 1/2" Weighs 1-2 lbs. This is a museum quality piece with much age. It has been in my collection for about 30 years. This would be a great addition to an African Art collection. Please ask questions.
