These spectacular fetishes are among the most prized in Africa, and are used by Songye. THE Nkishi is a mediator between the divine and men. We call on ... morethe Nganga (sorcerer) in case of sterility, illness, or threat. He then makes a Bwanga (pl. Manga) which will allow you to achieve the desired goal, whether it is procreation, healing, protection from misfortunes, lightning, or even hunting for game. A bwanga is an object or assembly of particular objects into which the sorcerer incorporates Bishimba or amalgams of secret ingredients. THE Nkishi is a particular form of Bwanga which takes an anthropomorphic form. THE Bishimba are incorporated into the cavities of the navel and the head. For this fetish, given its size, it is a particular protection.

Title, Luluwa Maternity Mother and Child Figure African Art, Type of Object, Figure, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Luluwa, Materials, Wood. Pigment, ... moreApproximate Age, second half 20th Century, Dimensions, 13.5 inches H. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, wear. Cracks in head, shallow cracks, scrapes. Luluwa Maternity. Mother and Child, African Art. Additional Information: This figure of a standing mother holding a child comes from the Luluwa. The Luluwa style is recognized here by the abundance use of body markings. This so-called maternity figure represents a lineage ancestor supporting her descent. Such figures were used in the fertility ritual. Called Bwanga bwa Tshibola. Scarifications on the head body and the arms are marks of the Luluwa ethnic group that are said to have some heroic functions. The Lulua are a relatively medium sized ethnic group of approximately 300.000 living in villages in the area of the Kasai River. Having migrated into the region they have come in contact with a number of larger and better-known people such as the Luba, Pende, and Chokwe absorbing some cultural and artistic traits from them. Usually figure like this portrays an elite of Lulua society, a chief or warrior. They are seen holding a sword in the right hand and a magical container in the left hand to hold the spirits of the ancestors. Like here, the skirt and hairstyle are markers of his status and the exaggerated umbilicus a common trait among Lulua. Sculptures of the Lulua people are well known for the elaborate scarification patterns worked onto the surface of the figures. These patterns are identified in some instances with symbolic meaning but must equally be viewed as aesthetic embellishment important to the Lulua. Though banned in the late 1880 s scarification has reemerged albeit in a much reduced fashion to again identify the Lulua. 75431* All content. Power Figures are Magic– religious sculptures made and used by the Songye people. Personal figurines were commissioned for immediate dangers. And once passed they would be discarded. From Wikipedia) There is an opening in the stomach of the figure for placing organic materials, and which are known as bishimba(medicine) Unusually there is also an opening at the figures rear. The hole in the figures head would have probably held a horn, this is now missing. Two cowry shells are set into the eyes. The figure stands 9 inches high. 3 ¼ inches across and 3 ½ inches deep. African SONGYE Congo Personal Power Figure (Nkishi/Nkisi)
A Songye diviner(nganga) In addition to designing and empowering a community nkishi/nksis(plural, mankishi) for the protection and well-being of all the members of a village. May prescribe a smaller nkishi for the private use of an individual. Customized to his or her personal needs. Individuals direct prayers to ancestral spirits through personal mankishi for many different reasons. While some seek protection for themselves and their families. Others may appeal for success in pursuits that affect their livelihood, such as hunting. The most common need they address. However, is an individual woman's desire to have children and to prevent miscarriages. Thus. A woman may commission an nkishi that is designed specifically to enhance her potential to conceive. Personal mankishi may also be incorporated into efforts to heal other ailments. ... moreOnce an nganga effectively treats a patient with herbal medications. He may prescribe the commissioning of such a work as a form of protective reinforcement. Consequently. The rituals that are essential for the creation and use of personal mankishi relate to the specific needs they fulfill in the lives of their owners. These privately commissioned works are usually not publicly accessible but are kept in their owners' homes. In order to motivate the ancestors to provide assistance in a personal crisis. Suppliants offer prayers and sacrifices to them. To mark the occasion of mukapasu, the first day of the first quarter of a lunar cycle. All the villagers take their personal mankishi and place them around the community nkishi. And these become the focus of ritual proceedings led by the nganga. This celebration of the reappearance of the moon is associated with prosperity and regeneration. The scale and aesthetic form of the nkishi shown here reflect its role as a personal devotional object. Whereas all community mankishi display a classical Songye ideal of male leadership. Smaller customized works of this kind show a far greater range of idiosyncratic designs. Within this more

The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. Such masks are worn during initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. AFRICAN CERAMIC WALL ART STYLIZED SONGYE KIFWEBE MASK D.R. CONGO - ZAIRE SIGNED
This mask was made by a student artist. Named Mabuanda, from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1988 in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo(at the time the country was actually named Zaire) Zaire then, and DRC now, is a poor country, unable to offer financial support to its youth. In order to support themselves and continue with their studies the students at the Academy sell their art. Many of them are very talented and produce beautiful art works which range from paintings, sculpture, ceramics and metalwork to large installations. When I worked in Zaire I bought from the students several pieces of art and used them to decorate my house. I will be moving to a smaller accommodation and have to part now with some of my collections.
