From Wikipedia) There is an opening in the stomach of the figure for placing organic materials, and which are known as bishimba(medicine) Unusually there is also an opening at the figures rear. The hole in the figures head would have probably held a horn, this is now missing. Two cowry shells are set into the eyes. The figure stands 9 inches high. 3 ¼ inches across and 3 ½ inches deep. Although the mask is in overall good condition. One piece of the wood that holds the string to the right hand side of the mask has broken and will need to be glued or repaired to hang on the wall. Please refer to picture# 6 to see what im referring to. The consignor of this item and her late husband visited Africa in the 1970's and obtained some nice artifacts; these are from their estate. Please see pictures for further detail. The Songye people live in the Democratic Republic of the Congo(DRC. Formerly Zaire) Numbering some 150,000 people, Songye society is patrilineal, and governed by a highly revered male chief. They share common ancestors and oral traditions with the Luba people of the DRC, and subsist by farming or hunting. Because rivers are believed to be the repository of the souls of revered ancestors, Songye people are extremely reluctant to fish. The warlike history of the Songye influences the confrontational nature of their art. Songye shields. Once a vital part of the the warrior's gear, are still hand-carved of wood, and often include the intimidating face and violently zig-zagging grooves that would once have frightened the enemy in battle. These grooved patterns are typical of Songye pieces, and may represent the scarifications that Songye warriors cut into their faces. They are among the most belligerent of all African masks. The presence of a central crest on a Songye mask identifies that mask as male. The female kifewebe has no crest but plain coiffure on its head. The size of the crest on male masks determines the magic power contained in the mask. Masquerades supplement these masks with woven costumes and long raffia beards.
