And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Stains, Additional Information: ... moredditional Information: This extraordinary carved mask with a transverse crest with brightly painted rays and the dramatic rounded eyes and square mouth mask is interesting in that it sets a problem of identification. Masks with these markings have been attributed in the past to the Tetela or Sungu people. A Tetela sub-group, neighbors to the Songye. However recent scholarship attributes such masks to the Songye people and denies the existence of masks among the Tetela. See De Husch, L. âBeauty is elsewhere: Returning a verdict on Tetela masks.â In Objects: Signs of Africa. 1995. pp. 175-194. Notwithstanding its origin this is a strongly carved mask with obvious signs of long use and some patination on the inside gained through time. It is probable that such a mask was inspired by the Songye masks The miter-like form on the top. As well as the squared mouth recall some Songye mask from a localized identification to a Songye Tempa sub-group. If really Tetela-Sungu this should be considered as new forms of art among these peoples demonstrating a strong Songye influence. The mouth is a huge tube with typical Songye shape! This is the most famous of the Songye masks. Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The face generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth is most often square ... moreand protruding. If it has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. Such masks are worn during initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks, or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture. The Songye confirm this provenance by the interpretation that the kifwebe striations relate(apart from the zebra) to a pugnacious species of striped bushbuck antelope which inhabited the area. Fine Large Antique Songye Kifwebe Mask Congo Zaire / DRC
This is a beautiful– and very fine antique Songye mask from the Kifwebe society. The Songye is a tribe from the central part of DRC(Kasai and Maniema) Although medium in size. It has many subgroups and its sculpture is widely known for its often spectacular and highly expressive features, whether fetishes or the Kifwebe masks. The piece here is of the male type- characterized by the very large crest(symbolizing an elder or important person) Kifwebe Songye masks with extreme features(like the protruding eyes and mouth) were produced from the 1920s through the 70s. I believe(judging by style and patina) the piece here to be an early piece. It is made of a medium wood, with a very large crest on top, relatively small eyes, a square, cross shaped mouth. The entire masked is striated and shows a succession of green, white and reddish pigments- ... moreall of which had a symbolic meaning among the Songye. The lines of the body do not show the classic cubist proportions and the head and belly don't have holes filled with magical substances. But the Songye style can be seen on the facial details such as the jutting chin and geometric nose. And the square mouth. Many groups in the greater Congo area. And elsewhere, use art to meet the contingencies of everyday life through the activities ... moreof the local priest or diviner known as the Nganga. These individuals of great spiritual strength and inductive abilities use the rituals, secret formulae and sculptures to heal and prevent the activities of malevolent forces. Here is a small bone amulet in the form of a pendant with two holes for stringing. It was made by the Songye people of the Congo. In the form of their famous Kifwebe masks. Covered with linear incisions, a square protruding mouth and a linear nose. These masks were made for initiation and ceremonial purposes of the tribe’s Bwandi Bwa Kifwebe secret society. This small bone amulet would probably have served a related purpose and would have been used as a means of identification in a similar manner to the so-called passport masks used in many African societies. This piece dates to. At least, the early part of the 20 th century. Judging from the mellow honey-colored patina and the slight splitting into layers of one corners of this pendant. 96 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE This elongated wooden Songye(Songe) Nkisi Female Fetish. With its hands held to the abdomen, stands on a domed base. A horn. Which would have contained magical substances in the past, is inserted at the crest of its head over an elongated face. Three brass tacks. Now partially deteriorated, have been driven into the forehead and bridge of the nose to counteract evil spirits and aggressors and to channel lightning against these adversaries. Fetishes such as this were made to protect individual owners from sickness and death. This carving has a dark brown patina with significant traces of kaolin and reddish pigmentation. There are a few vertical age cracks which run over parts of the figures face as well as over its left shoulder and down to the base. The animal horn probably became loose and fell out of its receptacle in the past but this has been reattached with glue. The Songye(Songe) people are noted for their sculptural creativity. Usually done in service of their many secret societies. This piece is part of my family’s private ethnographic collection started by my grandfather around 1910 or 1915. Additional Information: A Songye standing figure with hands placed on either side of the abdomen. Sticks in the arms, and horn into the head. The dramatic expression on this figure is emphasized by the use of animal horn inserted in the head. This horn was used to fill with magical elements. This well used figure comes from the Songye with overtones of other styles evident. The Songye live on the left bank of the Lualaba River in an area of savanna crossed by numerous major river systems. They have a long history of migration and cultural interchange with the Hemba. Kuba, Tetela, Luluwa and especially with the Luba from whom they are said to have originated. Magical beliefs and practice are widespread among the Songye people who use figures such as this on family or village altars where they contact the spirits of ancestors, nature spirits, and where offerings and prayers are given. Power figures among the Songye are known as nkishi(mankishi) while the same figure is commonly called a âfetishâ when placed in Western collections with misplaced implications. Rare old Bena Lulua Mask with headdress. The Lulua(luluwa) people are in fact a collection of small groups whose home bordered by the larger Luba state and the related and. With whom they share a very similar culture, history, and language. Lulua masks, artifacts and figures are hard to get nowadays as their people's art vanishes with time. From my collection here is a rare, used in the village and striking old mask from the Lulua. The raffia and wicker hood from the headdress still intact. In my educated guess I estimate this mask to be 40 to 50 years old. An unrestrained and overwhelming looking mask! It measures 17 inches from north to south, not including the headdress. SONGYE STATUE height: +- 50cm material: hard wood. Beads, vegetal fibres, horn and metal pins description: Old Songye statue. Typical carving with the animal horn on top. Fine patina and strong expression. This is an old statue. But not rotten or broken, however the statue is missing some metal pins on the head as can be seen on the photos. I have no idea about the age of this Songye. But the previous owner told me she has it from the seventies. It comes from an estate. Congo) Female ceremonial mask of Kifwebe secret society with its unique scary expression emphasized by protruding eyes and mouth as well as paraphernalia and grass beard. Was used in SONGYE ceremonies. Coming from old family collection of tribal artifacts. Item Description Tribe: SONGYE Country: South-east of D.R.Congo(former Zaire) During the 16th century. The Songye migrated from the Shaba area, which is now the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Being in war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. They settled on the left bank of the Lualaba River, on a savanna and forest-covered plateau. The SONGYE ... moreare not known for being gentle. Quite contrary, they have a well deserved reputation for being tough-that is probably related to their attention to magic resulting in far numerous fetishes than ancestral statues. The tribal society is patriarchal, mainly agricultural and is divided in different groups, all of which obey one chief“Yakitenge” and observe strict rules: no grief showing. No drinking in public and no handshaking with men. Fetish figures serve different purposes: protection of whole villages. Protection of individuals against death or disease and many, many others. They are being handled mostly during new phases of the moon. Three characteristic facial expressions can be usually distinguished: broad smile, sad and serious expression. The top of the head and the abdomen are usually hollowed to allow insertion of fetish material, called boanga. The fetishist would make the boanga with magic ingredients which he crumbled and mixed. Thus obtaining a paste that was kept in an antelope horn hung from the roof of the house. Crafted by the Songye tribe of the Congo. This pregnant female is powerful with her strands of beads adorning her neck and belly. There's also an old piece of fabric attached near her feet. She stands 15 3/4" tall and 3 1/4" wide by 4 1/4" deep. We found remnants of white, black and red paint. Item came from the estate sale of an Indiana University anthropology professor and comes to you untouched by us. We made no attempt whatsoever to cleant his piece. This is a very good old example of the Male Dance masks of the Kifwebe society. This mask has a unusual carving on the interior at the bridge of the nose. Very interesting and the first time I have seen this style of mask with that addition. The mask feels Old and used and is of a quality above what I typically come across. Ex Kragler Collection. This impressive large sculpture of a male figure wearing a Kifwebe mask comes from the Songye people who live on the left bank of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Figures among the Songye generally served a common purpose as âobjects of powerâ but rarely are shown wearing a mask. Among the Songye âpower figuresâ more commonly called âfetishâ figures have different magical substances that the owner. The ritual and magical âspecialistâ considers important to give the figure power to act and the magical substances that load a figure with power are called bishimba. The specialist who uses the figure is known as an nganga, literally a âspecialistâ(doctor) who can cure, divine or direct magical power against others. African Congo Songye Axe with Hand Forged Blade and Copper Plated Handle
These axes were carried by the Songye tribal people of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa circa 1880 to 1920. These were quite capable of being used for personal defense. However the primary use was not as a weapon but as status symbols of standing, prestige, occupation or affiliation. This is an excellent example with a hand forged axe head and copper cladded wooden handle with very intricate hand tooling. The steel shows rust and light pitting commensurate with age. The copper cladding has a nice even patina. This makes a great display or collector piece due to it's compact size and light weight. Specifications: Handle Length: 13" Handle Material: Copper cladded wood. Axe Head: Protrudes 6" from handle with a 3.5" width at blade edge.
