The mouth is a huge tube with typical Songye shape! This is the most famous of the Songye masks. Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The face generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth is most often square ... moreand protruding. If it has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. Such masks are worn during initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks, or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture. The Songye confirm this provenance by the interpretation that the kifwebe striations relate(apart from the zebra) to a pugnacious species of striped bushbuck antelope which inhabited the area. Fine Large Antique Songye Kifwebe Mask Congo Zaire / DRC
This is a beautiful– and very fine antique Songye mask from the Kifwebe society. The Songye is a tribe from the central part of DRC(Kasai and Maniema) Although medium in size. It has many subgroups and its sculpture is widely known for its often spectacular and highly expressive features, whether fetishes or the Kifwebe masks. The piece here is of the male type- characterized by the very large crest(symbolizing an elder or important person) Kifwebe Songye masks with extreme features(like the protruding eyes and mouth) were produced from the 1920s through the 70s. I believe(judging by style and patina) the piece here to be an early piece. It is made of a medium wood, with a very large crest on top, relatively small eyes, a square, cross shaped mouth. The entire masked is striated and shows a succession of green, white and reddish pigments- ... moreall of which had a symbolic meaning among the Songye. The inside of the mask show an excellent, dark patina. This is a large, spectacular mask. Dimensions are approximately 27x15. FINE OLD SONGYE KIFWEBE BONE AMULET PASSORT MASK FAMILY PROVENANCE
Here is a small bone amulet in the form of a pendant with two holes for stringing. It was made by the Songye people of the Congo. In the form of their famous Kifwebe masks. Covered with linear incisions, a square protruding mouth and a linear nose. These masks were made for initiation and ceremonial purposes of the tribe’s Bwandi Bwa Kifwebe secret society. This small bone amulet would probably have served a related purpose and would have been used as a means of identification in a similar manner to the so-called passport masks used in many African societies. This piece dates to. At least, the early part of the 20 th century. Judging from the mellow honey-colored patina and the slight splitting into layers of one corners of this pendant. The back part of this pendant has developed a much darker brown patina. This was collected by my aunt ... morewhile she was working as a teacher in Africa during the 1960’s. Old Bena Lulua Mask with Headdress. Songye Yoruba Luba Baule Dan Lega Yaka
Rare old Bena Lulua Mask with headdress. The Lulua(luluwa) people are in fact a collection of small groups whose home bordered by the larger Luba state and the related and. With whom they share a very similar culture, history, and language. Lulua masks, artifacts and figures are hard to get nowadays as their people's art vanishes with time. From my collection here is a rare, used in the village and striking old mask from the Lulua. The raffia and wicker hood from the headdress still intact. In my educated guess I estimate this mask to be 40 to 50 years old. An unrestrained and overwhelming looking mask! It measures 17 inches from north to south, not including the headdress. Stand not included. Thanks for looking!

SONGYE(BASONGE. BASONGYE, BASSONGO, BAYEMBE, SONGE, SONGHAY, WASONGA) Democratic Republic of the Congo During the 16th century. The Songye migrated from the Shaba area, which is now the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Having waged war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. They settled on the left bank of the Lualaba River, on a savanna and forest-covered plateau. Divided into many subgroups, the 150,000 Songye people are governed by a central chief assisted by innumerable secret societies. The Songye traditionally relied mostly on farming and hunting for subsistence. Because the rivers were associated with the spirits of deceased chiefs who were often ... moreburied in them. Fishing was not practiced except in times of great need. The artistic wares of the Songye, including pottery made by women and weaving and metalworking done by men, were traded extensively with their neighbors. Spectacular SONGYE Tribe 'Kifwebe' Mask-D.R.Congo
MAGNIFICENT, SONGYE Tribe. Kifwebe’ Mask(Zaire-D.R. Congo) Female ceremonial mask of Kifwebe secret society with its unique scary expression emphasized by protruding eyes and mouth as well as paraphernalia and grass beard. Was used in SONGYE ceremonies. Coming from old family collection of tribal artifacts. Item Description Tribe: SONGYE Country: South-east of D.R.Congo(former Zaire) During the 16th century. The Songye migrated from the Shaba area, which is now the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They settled on the left bank of the Lualaba River, on a savanna and forest-covered plateau. The SONGYE ... moreare not known for being gentle. Quite contrary, they have a well deserved reputation for being tough-that is probably related to their attention to magic resulting in far numerous fetishes than ancestral statues. The tribal society is patriarchal, mainly agricultural and is divided in different groups, all of which obey one chief“Yakitenge” and observe strict rules: no grief showing. No drinking in public and no handshaking with men. Fetish figures serve different purposes: protection of whole villages. Protection of individuals against death or disease and many, many others. They are being handled mostly during new phases of the moon. Three characteristic facial expressions can be usually distinguished: broad smile, sad and serious expression. The top of the head and the abdomen are usually hollowed to allow insertion of fetish material, called boanga. The fetishist would make the boanga with magic ingredients which he crumbled and mixed. Thus obtaining a paste that was kept in an antelope horn hung from the roof of the house. The magic ingredients consist of a wide variety of animal, vegetal, mineral and human substances that activate and bring into play benevolent ancestra

Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Having waged war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo, who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. Highly stylized masks called the Kifwebe are famous Songye tribal art. These masks have grooved pattern on the face and is a common characteristic. The white paint in the grooves symbolizes peace, light and the purity of the soul. Some mask adorned with brown, tan and blue symbolizes nature as positive force. The facial elements are associated with animals.

Outstanding Songye Kifwebe Spirit Mask, DRC
In the Songye language. A mask is a kifwebe: this term has been given to masks representing spirits and characterized by striations. Depending on the region. It may be dark with white strips, or the reverse. The kifwebe masks embodied supernatural forces. The kifwebe society used them to ward off disaster or any threat. The masks. Supplemented by a woven costume and a long beard of raffia bast, dance at various ceremonies. They are worn by men who act as police at the behest of a ruler, or to intimidate the enemy. It can be either masculine, if carved with a central crest, or feminine if displaying a plain coiffure. The size of the crest determines the magic power of the mask. Mask, colors, and costume all have symbolic meaning. The dancer who wears the male mask will display aggressive and uncontrolled behavior with the aim of encouraging ... moresocial conformity, whereas the dancer who wears the female mask display more gentle and controlled movements and is assumed to be associated with reproduction ceremonies. The use of white on the mask symbolizes positive concepts such as purity and peace, the moon and light. Red is associated with blood and fire, courage and fortitude, but also with danger and evil. Female masks essentially reflect positive forces and appear principally in dances held at night, such as during lunar ceremonies and at the investiture or death of a ruler. The mask had also the capacity to heal by means of the supernatural force it was supposed to incorporate. The ritual of exorcism consisted of holding the sick man’s mask while a magician acted as if he were casting it into the fire. Kifwebe mask representations also appear on other objects belonging to the kifwebe society– grooved shields. For example, are adorned with a central mask. Measures- 13" X 7" Solid wood. BASONGYE, BASSONGO, BAYEMBE, SONGE, SONGHAY, WASONGA) There are numerous mask styles associated with the Songye. The Lomani River divides Songye territory and marks the boundary of the areas invaded by the Luba. As a result of these geographic and political differences there emerged of two distinct social structures among the eastern and western Songye and two stylistic differences in art forms between the two areas. The white color of the striations symbolizes peace and purity while the red could mean any of danger. Fire, blood, evil, courage or fortitude.
AUTHENTIC MALE KIFWEBE SONGYE MASK LUBA TETELA HEMBA KUBA PENDE + HALF COSTUME!
AUTHENTIC ANCIENT MALE KIFWEBE MASK + HALF COSTUME FROM SONGYE TRIBE. D. R. OF CONGO. DIMENSIONS: HEIGHT: 71 CM(WITHOUT COSTUME; 108 CM INCLUDING COSTUME) WIDTH: 22 CM; DEPTH: 29 CM. THIS OBJECT HAS BEEN CHEMICALLY ANALYSED BY THE LABORATORY OF MUSEUM D’ARTE E SCIENZA IN MILAN(http:www.africanartauthenticity.com/index-ita1.htm#Determinazione_dellet%C3%A0_di_oggetti_darte_africana_in_legno) WITH THE FOLLOWING OUTCOMES: TYPE OF WOOD: RICINODENDRON RAUTANENII. AS STATED BY DUNJA HERSAK IN ITS“SONGYE MASKS AND FIGURE SCULPTURES” LONDON: ETHNOGRAPHICA 1985) SONGYE CARVERS OFTEN SELECTED MULELA(RICINODENDRON RAUTANENII) A SOFT WOOD, FOR KIFWEBE MASKS. COLOR, ANCESTRY ASSOCIATIONS, AND PERISHABILITY MAY ALL HAVE BEEN CONSIDERATIONS IN THAT CHOICE. FIRST, IT MAY BE SIGNIFICANT TO THE SELECTION CRITERIA THAT THE WOOD OF THIS TREE POSSESSES A DISTINCTLY ... moreWHITE GROWTH RING SECTION AND A RED SAP-FILLED CENTRAL CORE, THESE BEING THE TWO SIGNALLING COLOURS OF FEMALE AND MALE KIFWEBE RESPECTIVELY. THE SECOND POINT TO NOTE IS THAT THIS SPECIES WAS CITED AS ONE OF THE SERIES OF TREES PLANTED AROUND EPATA(THE CHIEF’S RESIDENCE) POSSIBLY IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE ANCESTORS. IN ADDITION TO MULELA, A FEW OTHER TREES SERVED THE SONGYE AS SOURCES FOR CARVING WOOD. THEY HAD IN COMMON THAT THEY WERE SOFT AND LIGHT IN WEIGHT BUT NOT PARTICULARLY DURABLE. THE IMPLICATION OF THE LATTER CHARACTERISTIC CREATES THE POSSIBILITY THAT WHAT SEEMS AN INHERENT DETRIMENT WAS, IN FACT, A MOTIVATING FACTOR IN THE CHOICE OF THAT WOOD. THEIR LOW DENSITY FACTOR INDICATES THAT THEY ARE ALL WOODS HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO INSECT ATTACK AND PRONE TO CRACKING AND OTHER DAMAGE. THIS ANATOMICAL PROPERTY OF THE WOODS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT AMONG SONGYE AS IT SUGGESTS THAT THE MASKS ARE PERISHABLE AND REPLACEABLE OBJECTS. IN A GENERAL SENSE, ONE HAS THE IMPRESSION THAT THE LIFE AND MORTALITY OF THE MASKS COINCIDE METAPHORICALLY WITH THE CHANGING GENERATIONS OF RULERS AND THEIR REGIMES. WOOD AGE: THE LABORATORY OF THE MUSEUM DATED THE WOOD OF THE MAS
Hemba Ibombo mask masque Tribal africa congo dogon yoruba songye fang kota lobi
Old and fine wood African Hemba mask. Carved in very hard and heavy wood, good volume) and with a very nice encrusted sacrificial patina. Mid 20th Century. I love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey ... moremask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful. The personification of this being depicts the potential of nature and the need to control its excesses through the dancing of the men’s society Ibombo ya Soho masks. These masks are not very large and upon occasions are worn at dancer’s waists or kept in the house to protect the household from malevolent forces. The Hemba monkey mask reflects the ability of the African artist to characterize the idea of life and death in brooding sculptural form. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. Height: 33 cm. 13 in. Stand not included Read Before Bidding I am not a shop dealer.
