Fine Large Antique Songye Kifwebe Mask Congo Zaire / DRC
This is a beautiful– and very fine antique Songye mask from the Kifwebe society. The Songye is a tribe from the central part of DRC(Kasai and Maniema) Although medium in size. It has many subgroups and its sculpture is widely known for its often spectacular and highly expressive features, whether fetishes or the Kifwebe masks. The piece here is of the male type- characterized by the very large crest(symbolizing an elder or important person) Kifwebe Songye masks with extreme features(like the protruding eyes and mouth) were produced from the 1920s through the 70s. I believe(judging by style and patina) the piece here to be an early piece. It is made of a medium wood, with a very large crest on top, relatively small eyes, a square, cross shaped mouth. Here is a small bone amulet in the form of a pendant with two holes for stringing. It was made by the Songye people of the Congo. In the form of their famous Kifwebe masks. Covered with linear incisions, a square protruding mouth and a linear nose. These masks were made for initiation and ceremonial purposes of the tribe’s Bwandi Bwa Kifwebe secret society. This small bone amulet would probably have served a related purpose and would have been used as a means of identification in a similar manner to the so-called passport masks used in many African societies. With whom they share a very similar culture, history, and language. Lulua masks, artifacts and figures are hard to get nowadays as their people's art vanishes with time. From my collection here is a rare, used in the village and striking old mask from the Lulua. The raffia and wicker hood from the headdress still intact. In my educated guess I estimate this mask to be 40 to 50 years old. An unrestrained and overwhelming looking mask! It measures 17 inches from north to south, not including the headdress. Quite contrary, they have a well deserved reputation for being tough-that is probably related to their attention to magic resulting in far numerous fetishes than ancestral statues. This is a very good old example of the Male Dance masks of the Kifwebe society. This mask has a unusual carving on the interior at the bridge of the nose. Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Having waged war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo, who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. Highly stylized masks called the Kifwebe are famous Songye tribal art. These masks have grooved pattern on the face and is a common characteristic. The white paint in the grooves symbolizes peace, light and the purity of the soul. Some mask adorned with brown, tan and blue symbolizes nature as positive force. The facial elements are associated with animals.

In the Songye language. A mask is a kifwebe: this term has been given to masks representing spirits and characterized by striations. Depending on the region. It may be dark with white strips, or the reverse. The kifwebe masks embodied supernatural forces. The kifwebe society used them to ward off disaster or any threat. The masks. The wooden part of this hand carved mask measures 12 3/8" x 5 3/8" x 2" With the twine type hair it is 24" overall. The mask has a hook on the back and is ready to hang and enjoy. It measures 15 3/4” tall. Dad used two of the existing holes to add a string for hanging on the wall. Condition is excellent. It was painted. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. KIFWEBE MASK Kifwebe masks are carved by the Songye people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret Society to ward off evil. Avert disaster and heal the sick. Kifwebe masks are known for dynamic carving and painting. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors and a large crest on the forehead. These masks are worn during initiation, circumcision or funeral ceremonies. This is a beautiful example showing the age, character and artistic skills of the maker. Origin: Zaire. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The faces recall the Kifwebe masks with linear incisions pigmented, the mouth in the form of a 8 and the central crests. Sculpture like this are known as Nkishi and often served to divine the future. Among the Songye, such figures generally served a common purpose as âobjects of powerâ. When represented by two bodies or heads, these carvigs are supposed to embody more power than single ones. NKishi(sing. or Makishi(plural) have different magical substances that the owner, the ritual and magical âspecialistâ, Nganga considers important to give the figure power to act and the magical substances that load a figure with power are called bishimba. Nkishi also serves as the contact point between the spirits and the Nganga, it is where the ritual activity of the diviner meets spiritual presence. The age of the object can be seen in the wear of the surface through long use and the accumulation of magical elements.This sculpture would stand well in a serious collection.
