The mouth is a huge tube with typical Songye shape! This is the most famous of the Songye masks. Made for the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe Secret society. Kifwebe" means"Mask" in the Songye language. The face generally is covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth is most often square ... moreand protruding. If it has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. Such masks are worn during initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. According to Hersak(1985: 168) The striated masks, or kifwebe, are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society. Among the societies public performances, three mask types exist: two grades of male and one female mask. Male masks are distinguished by a striated pattern of three colors while the female one is predominantly white with the features accented in black and some red. The Kifwebe tradition which exists also among the Luba, seems to have originated south of the eastern chiefdom in an area of Luba/Songe admixture. The Songye confirm this provenance by the interpretation that the kifwebe striations relate(apart from the zebra) to a pugnacious species of striped bushbuck antelope which inhabited the area. I acquired this great tribal mask at an estate sale. The man who it belonged to had many artifacts from extensive travel in Africa in the 1950's though the 1980's. This mask is large. Measuring 16" long and 12" wide. I have been told that it is a Kifwebe mask that came from the Belgian Congo. It is wooden, hand carved. It would display nicely. I am not an expert by any means on African art, so please ask questions prior to bidding. I will be happy to answer!

Late 19th Century Songye carved African Tribal Mask Relic
This auction is for a late 19th century Luba or cross to the Songye carved tribal mask relic as in the photos. This piece is old and could be useful to interior decorators or collectors alike. It measures 12 inches long x 8 1/4 inches wide x 4 1/2 inches deep. It is all in original condition and the rope knot hair braids are long since gone but these are easy to restore with very little effort. This piece is believed to have originated in the Congo region of western Africa.

Fantastic Ancient Songye Torso Figure, Kifwebe 'Mask'
Although the legs have eroded away. This torso with its Kifwebe masked face is a fine and powerful sculpture. It shows its age in the patina. The'magic' medicine(bilongo) receptacle in the stomach is now largely empty, indicating it has done its job and was'decommisioned' afterwards. 26cm Apart from the leg erosion. The condition is good with normal age and use related wear. The custom stand is not the best quality and I would have replaced it if space at home(and my wife! didn't dictate I sell. The figure itself is great. There are remnants of ceremonial decoration and libations especially in the Kifwebe grooves. It was an early piece in my own collection and I will be sad to see it go.
