On offer here is what I believe to be a Power Figure from the Songye people an ethnic group living in the Lomami Province in the Democratic Republic of ... moreCongo. Power Figures are Magic– religious sculptures made and used by the Songye people. Personal figurines were commissioned for immediate dangers. And once passed they would be discarded. From Wikipedia) There is an opening in the stomach of the figure for placing organic materials, and which are known as bishimba(medicine) Unusually there is also an opening at the figures rear. The hole in the figures head would have probably held a horn, this is now missing. Two cowry shells are set into the eyes. The figure stands 9 inches high. 3 ¼ inches across and 3 ½ inches deep.
