For sale this second nice and characterfull Asmat dagger(not sure if Asmat; at least from New Guinea) A bit different kind of boone; a bit thicker. Perhaps the tigh? Simpler in style but nice with the open cut diamond shape. Nice patine and shiny. These were used by headhunters/cannibals/warriors worn through an armlet(see perhaps my other listing) on the upperarm. Painted with river mud and decorated with hanging nuts, and seeds(used like beads) The gourd is decorated with twine, shells, and clay colors. Curves can be made in it by the use of string to restrain its growth in whatever direction the grower wishes. They can be quite elaborately shaped in this manner. When harvested, the gourd is emptied and dried. Often, phallocrypts, or"penis gourds, were the only clothing New Guinea men once wore. Crocodiles feature prominently in the legends and rites of passage of various Sepik tribes. Stories may vary from village to village. But there is a shared belief in ancestral ties to the crocodiles and a practice of ritual scarring of initiated men that emulates crocodile skin. The carving came to the Silicon Valley Historical Association through the estate of the Berta Wright Gallery Shop in Tucson. Arizona, that closed in the late 1990s. I do not know the exact age of this carving but it is not new. Lots of surface wear and scratches give the carving a beautiful old patina. His eyes are inserted parts of shells.
