ULTRA RARE 19th Century Papau New Guinea SEPIK RIVER woven WATER Jug. 15" high. 8 1/2" diameter. Very tightly handwoven basket, intricate weaving designs. Appears to grasses and very thin vines. The inside and top band of the jug are completely covered in a natural black rubbery substance to water proof it. 12 vertical leather straps encase the jug, two forming the lid hold, and the carrying straps, both decorated with shells. The jug is hard, solid, firm to the touch. A much used, practical piece. I believe this dates from well before the 1900's. The age reflects in the condition. There are grass losses around the widest part of the basket. Between the leather straps, where the basket might be hit against as it was moved around in daily use. The black rubber shows wear and cracking. The leather is quite hard. Even more interesting, ... morethere are quite a few toredo holes, indicating that this piece must have spent a considerable amount of time submersed. When I hold the jug to the light, and look through the mouth, I can see some pinholes around the base. Exactly what I would expect to find in such an old, authentic piece.

Sepik War trumpet- pre contact XIX century pre contact stone carved middle Sepik war trumpet. Such trumpets were used during head hunting raids to coordinate the attacks and then by returning warriors celebrating a successful operation. This ancient artifact has an incredible patina and wear from very long time in the field. The ending is a stylized pig head. The wood is incredibly hard. Just as if it was stone. There are some markings, likely by the latest owner in PNG(check the pics) It is 65 cm tall, with a wooden stand. Where about in Sepik? I have seen similar designs from Sawos people. But I do not have a definitive location, although I have seen similar treatment of a pig head carving on other very old objects. I bought it 5 years from a well known American dealer, but he did not have collecting information. I also add some images ... morefrom the Kelm 1967 publication. Banaro spirit figure - Keram River - East Sepik, PNG
This is bird faced spirit figure from the Banaro people who live along the middle section of the Keram River. A tributary of the Sepik river. I believe these figures are used as personal magic charms. The Banaro place great faith in magic which is regarded as the primary means of manipulating the natural and supernatural worlds. I don't think it is very old. But as you see from the images it has great form, aesthetically very powerful and very well carved. A dark patina with areas of encrustation. Made from a light hard wood. There is a small stable age crack in the base. It also does not stand on it's own, I use a disc of felt normally put under furniture. An impressive. Large mask from Papua New Guinea, I believe, probably Sepik. The mask has a head-dress of feathers and a crocodile for its mouth. It has tusks protruding from it's nostrils. The mask looks fantastic. Not sure of it's age but appears to have some wear around its edges indicating that it's been around for some time. it certainly has an old feel to it. The mask measures 26" in height(not including the feathers) and 11& 1/2" wide. This is a lovely decorative mask that would look fantastic on any wall. Collected from a village north of the Middle Sepik in the late 1970's. This carving was lodged in the fork of a tree. Where it looked down on the vegetable garden, as if protecting, and ensuring a good crop of yams. It is carved from a hardwood into the form of a boars head with tusks, and painted in red and white trade paint, and yellow ochre around the bulging eyes.
