TRIBAL FUNERAL VESSEL? SEPIK PNG POTTERY MUSEUM FOLK ART
This is an intriguing piece of Sepik River pottery from Papua New Guinea. I have been told it is a funenrial vessel as the inside of the vessel has obviously contained ashes at some point of time. Crudely made. It is still a wonderful piece of tribal folk art. The lid has concentric circles painted on its upper surface, its base is shaped like a baby's dummy and has a hole drilled through it. For what purpose? The vessel stands 6.25 inches or 16 cm tall. As it is made from earth I will NOT send uninsured anywhere, although pickup is avilable from Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. Genuine Old Rare Vintage Karaut. Karahut Papua New Guinea Sepik Magic War Charm Description: A nice old Kara'ut war charm. It was collected in the 1960's in the Sepik River. Abelam region of New Guinea. It was collected after a Sing Sing. Genuine ceremonially used kara'ut are rare. Size: Measures 15 x 35 cm. Condition: Apart from a couple of chips on the tips of the boar teeth the condition is good- please see photos. Karahuts are woven from hibiscus bark twine and sennit fibre. Decorated with boar's teeth, small Nasa shells with applied ochre and charcoal paints. Karahuts are used in a number of ceremonies. During dancing they are held between the teeth using a string coming out from the back about the level of the eyes. When not being used they are hung around the neck and lie in the middle of the man's back or worn ... morearound the neck as a pectoral adornment at sing sing's. The figure looks as if it has horns- this is a misconception. Wild pigs are very aggressive and the wearer of the kara-ut believes that when the'horns' are spouting from his mouth he can adopt its power when fighting. The woven figure depicted an enemy who dangles helplessly impaled on the pigs/fighters teeth. The name of this art form. Kara means'Pig or Boar' and Ut means'net bag' has a significant spiritual context. Contained within the body of the figure is a bundle of magical leaves& herbs that aid the wearer. Special Value for 2 pieces: PH14. Both collected from 2 different Iatmul tribes in Papua New Guinea along the Sepik river 2 for 139.99 authentic original traditional. Penis covers, cache sex, seen on most of the photos as well as people wearing them. The 2 gourds. Very large and ornate, with a hand woven netting, a decorative sheath covering the gourd itself(created with hand twisted bark twine adorned with hand painted geometric motifs obtained from natural pigments) and with tassels of seed beads and nuts dangling for effect, was worn during initiations and ceremonies in the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea, Kamindabit village, Iatmul tribe, 1 foot range. 12" Both are rare Tribal Gourd Phallocrypts Woven Sheaths. Sepik river, Papua New Guinea and collected on the premises. All our handcrafted or rare collector items come with pages ... moreand pages of research. About provenance, with history of the tribes and photos as well, depending on item and whenever possible. Gourd phallocrypts or cache sex. As seen on National Geographic or the Discovery Channel programs, are specifically grown to elongated sizes in Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya(with careful tending and pulling with weights) to be worn by the tribal males, some are inserted in a woven netting sheath of handmade bark fiber string for decoration purposes, some are plain(some others, not gourds then, are carved out of wood, or made of large shells such as balers) We carry all types. May it be plain or not. The phallocrypts’lengths matter and bring power and respect to the wearer. Colors used, if any, are always natural pigments. The gourds are grown by the men and the weave is done by the women whenever weave is used. Unique Painted Tribal Sepik River Mask Art from Papua New Guinea Wood and shell
This is a very cool looking hand carved mask from Papua New Guinea Sepik River Area. Carved of solid wood and decorated with shells and hand painted. 13.5" x 8.5" and almost 3" thick. As far as I can tell there is no damage except from wear due to handling. Not sure of age. Would look great in any collection. Please check my other sales for other great items.
