I was also advised that this was a well defined Knife Ax or Scraper with patina. The was probably used in the 1800s or early 1900s. Papua New Guinea. Sepik River Ceremonial Cassowary Bone Dagger This is a magnificent vintage mid-century ceremonial bone dagger from the Iatmul Tribe located in the Middle Sepik River area. PNG. The modeled head, with its shell eyes, is made from clay, assorted natural materials such as tree resin and pigments, cowry shells, cassowary bird feathers, and raffia twine. This has been placed upon a polished piece of leg bone from the cassowary bird, which is a sacred totem. It is in very good used condition given it's age and use. The clay head is solid and solidly attached to the bone. There is however some minor chipping around the ears where the raffia is attached. There is also a chip off the middle of the back of the head where a raffia string may have passed through a hole for the owner to wear the dagger like a talisman. A shiny material ... moreis present which may be some type of glue and a few feathers are missing, but all things considered, the piece is in very nice shape. See the photo details. Very large and ornate, with a hand woven netting, a decorative sheath covering the gourd itself(created with hand twisted bark twine adorned with hand painted geometric motifs obtained from natural pigments) and with tassels of seed beads and nuts dangling for effect, was worn during initiations and ceremonies in the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea, Kamindabit village, Iatmul tribe, over 1 foot long and seen worn on photo 4. b) the second gourd is a slimmer one from the remote Baliem valley Yali tribe. Vintage Antique PAPUA NEW GUINEA Tribal Native SEPIK MASK Hand Carved Wood ART
This native mask has a great look and lots of character. Original paint is still in place although it has rubbed off and faded in spots a little bit through the years. From looking at pictures I am pretty sure this is a Sepik River mask from Papua New Guinea. But at the same time I am not 100% sure as I picked this piece up at a higher end eclectic estate sale where there was a wide variety of pieces. I do not see any cracks or damage, besides the normal age related wear. The mask is made of wood, and has shells for eyes. Long pointed hook nose is still in good shape considering that it gets pretty thin towards the bottom. I cannot pinpoint an age on this piece, but judging from the way the original paint looks, it is pretty old. VERY NICE* OLD VTG Ca 1950's NEW GUINEA UPPER SEPIK WASHKUK LODGE HOOK FIGURE This offering is for an old original circa 1950's tribal lodge hook figure from the Upper Sepik Washkuk region of New Guinea. The figure measures app. 28" in length and it retains the original vegetable material nose tie and decorations. The figure is carved semi round with a crocodile spine on the back side and features carved designs on the belly as well as painted elements in dark red. White and ochre. The surface is excellent with a great old dark patina that is very pleasing. The painted designs have typical loss and wear as should be expected. There are also some losses to the figures nose and ears and belly carvings as should be expected. He is quite well endowed which leads us to think that he is a virility or strength statue. His face looks like a long. Large mask with fierce eyes with cowrie shells. He has a raffia beard all along the edges of his face. The top of his mask has a second smaller face with cowrie shell eyes. He has very pointed ears, and a reasonably proportionate body. Up for auction is a large. Wooden mask Kandangai village along the Sepik river in Papua New Guinea. These masks represent the ancestors and are carved with tribal and animal motifs. The mask is in very good shape given its age(from the 70s) with some loss of the clay and shell inlays and minor wood scuffing. It is intricately carved and decorated with shell inlays and cassowary feathers. The mask measures 18in tall. 8.5in wide, and 5in deep. It comes from a pet-free, smoke-free home. Ancient Ramu Sepik River Mask Papua New Guinea ex Billy Jamieson coll Old
Up for offer is what looks to be an absolutely ancient mask from Papua New Guinea. I think(think) Sepik thru Ramu River(s) region. This came from the estate of William(Billy) Jamieson as it was purchased from an auction featuring a lifetime of his collecting, in Toronto, over a year ago. Old& dry almost"puffed" patina with what looks to be worm holes and clear signs of use and age. I am open to any suggestions out there as to specific origins as I've seen similar masks from the Ramu region and Sepik designs but that nose is most unique! The head looks to have an outstretched bird(to me, it looks like a bird) on the forehead while I'm not sure if the eye-inserts are glass or porcelain, obviously acquired thru European trade. The nose is pierced which I understand is a clear sign of lineage while the whole mask just feels ... morelike it has a"presence" The ear and side-holes would've had attachments, now long gone. 16"H x 6"W x 4-1/4"D. I have been searching many museumcollections etc but the only similar bowls(without carving) are those offered on ebay a year or so ago described as being collected in the Marshall islands. As the bowl is more ampulshaped and deeper than most New Guineabowls and has these two knobs on either side. The inside of the bowl in the deeper part shows remains of a white residue. I think this example with its large lizard carving outrises a bit the general'wooden bowl' beside its origins(IF ANYONE CAN CONFIRM OR PROVE ITS RIGHT ORIGINS? Condition; excellent. A unique hand carved detailed sculpture from the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea representing a rendition of mystical symbolic mythological tales and seen on all the pictures, and which story is explained below in red. It was collected in the field along the Sepik River in PNG, in Palembei village. Tall very detailed piece: 50" tall x 6" wide Number 3 and 31A4 in our inventory This figure was kept in the men’s spirit house(called Haus Tambaran or Gaigo) It works as a magical shield together with other figures in the Gaigo. Generally protecting from bad magic worked against the village by marauding demons(Maselei) or magic generated by enemy sorcerers(Sanguma) The figure represents a mythological woman(Kanda) wearing a wedding veil representing a Brahimney kite ... morecalled Mamanarliger or Kanganarn. On her back here. You see the kite which transforms into a eel towards the bottom of the statue and her feet are held by fish that will help her cross the river without drowning nor being attacked by a crocodile. The story from where some of these characters are drawn often refers to secret tales only known by the tribal elders. The figure was hand carved out of wood. Dream Face Mask. Middle Sepik River, Papua New Guinea, Timbunke Tambunum Village. The design for this mask came many years ago in a dream to a man who was a member of the Sago Clan. Eventually he allowed other clans to use his“mark” and so they can now be made by all four clans in Tambunum. They generally include clan symbols on the forehead and/or chin. This one has a crocodile. A very powerful clan totem on the top. A very beautifully carved mask with lots of deep incised design and a large and bold face make for a striking mask. The design on the face is classic face paint design used in this village for initiations and other major events. Fine late 19th/20thC Food serving bowl from the Sepik River Region. The bowl is of elongated oval form. Handles in the shape of stylized crocodiles heads on both ends. Flattened at the bottom. The shape is copied from that of a canoe; Sepik people also may refer to the body as a canoe for the soul or spirit. Length 52cm. Width 20.5cm. A unique slim elegant statue of a female, a hand carved detailed sculpture from the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea with mystical symbolic meaning and seen on all the pictures. It was collected in the field along the Sepik River in PNG, in Palembei village. Generally protecting from bad magic worked against the village by marauding demons(Maselei) or magic generated by enemy sorcerers(Sanguma) The story from where some of these characters are drawn often refers to secret tales only known by the tribal elders. The figure was hand carved out of ... morewood. All eyes of woman and animals are Nassa shells incrusted into the hand carving. Colors are natural pigments obtained from nature such as white lime from shells. Charcoal etc. In Palembei village. On the middle Sepik river, Papua New Guinea, outstanding master carvers, whose work appear in Art Exhibitions around the world, created beautiful slim polychrome statues inspired by their spiritual beliefs and traditional tales. While firmly based in tradition, these contemporary works abound with both innovation and individual expression. Among the finest traditional art forms of the Sepik region are the fine varied sculptures kept in the men's ceremonial house.
