There are some condition issues but that is to be expected in an authentic artifact that carries considerable age. There is a crack that runs vertically along the left side of the body and the tip of the bill has been repaired/re-attached by a previous owner. I've owned this piece since he early'70's(bought in Cairns Australia) and aside from displaying it prominently in my home have done nothing to it. Measures 26" 66 cm in height. Pigments. Derived from various amalgams of charcoal, lime, ground earth, plants, burnt shells and minerals mixed with tree sap, water and clay have been applied overall. The use of colour is an important aspect of Middle and Upper Sepik River art(The Sepik River Basin being a region of PNG noted for its production of artifacts) It's believed that colouring a carving will increase the power associated with it and carvings are often decorated and re-decorated before important ceremonies. Am including with this bird a loosely woven string bag. Known throughout PNG as a'bilum' bought at the same time. Mid 20th century or earlier. Similar examples seen recently in the collection of Oceanic artifacts in the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver B.C. Bilums are made throughout PNG. Traditionally. As in this example they were made with plant fibres, usinga process known as'looping' or'knotless netting. Many villagers are now finding it easier to use store bought wool and cotton and so the natural examples are relatively rare. Small. And was an old piece ... moreat that time, though I honestly don't know its' exact age. It is made of clay, a turtle shell, and decorated with a fiber"beard" and cowrie shells. The face is actually modeled into the shape of a human face with clay that has been applied to the top of a turtle shell. It is further decorated with polychrome black, red, and white paint. This mask is a traditional old type, and doesn't appear to be one made for the tourist trade. It measures about 9" high, 7 1/4" wide, and has a 9" fiber beard. It is in good condition, given the fragile naturre of the materials used to make it. There are some cracks in the circle of clay in which the cowries are set that look like they might have been repaired, but over all, it still displays very well. A nice old New Guinea piece. Up in this auction is a Large antique Papua New Guinea Clan Father center pole hero statue. The figure is dominated by an oval flattened facial plane with strong nose and prominent eyes. Accentuated by shell inlay. It can be safely assumed, that such figures represent major beings, possibly a clan father, the male of the primordial couple, or a great warrior of the past who now functions as a powerful deity. Such cultural heroes were kept in the men's house, where they were tied to the central support-post of the building. Offerings of food and betel-nut were made to the figures before embarking on hunting or war faring expeditions. It measures approx. 42" tall. The bowl is made of 1 piece of wood and on both sides its decorated with crocodile- dog heads. with the typical sepik mouths and noses. A Carved wood hook figure or Yipwon. Trace pigment, Papau New Guinea. Approximately 18 inches long. A unique and authentic piece of tribal art from a remarkably remote island. Kept within the men's ceremonial house. The distinctive hook figures(yipwon) played a central role in hunting and warfare. Depicting powerful spirits, the images served as vessels into which the spirits were called before a hunt or raid and presented with offerings. The yipwon then went forth during the night to slay the souls of the game or human enemies, enabling the men to easily kill the actual animals or enemies the following day. If a yipwon was successful, the men showed their gratitude by offering it a portion of the game or smearing it with the victims' blood. If it failed, the figure was neglected or discarded. c1930s Large Sepik Tribal Statue. New Guinea. Very Impressive Piece.
This auction is for a large New Guinea Sepik statue of a woman measuring 101 cm in height. This is a very impressive piece. The person I got this from said it belonged to her grandfather and that it was from the 1930's. I don't know if this is true or not but the statue obviously has a lot of age to it. One of the shell eyes is missing and there is a chip on the base. Otherwise the figure is in very good original condition. I've sold quite a few PNG carvings over the years and this is one of the best I've seen. Check out my other auctions. On offer is a superb shell decorated fibre armband from the Sepik area of New Guinea. It is large. About 120mm in diameter x 190mm, and comprises of a beautifully woven band, with some ochre colour on the band. It has eight woven pendants of a type of Olive Shell and is decorated liberally with rows of nassa shells and cowries. It is a monetary valuable worn only by important men. It was Lot No. 142 of Lawson’s Auction of 19 th February 1996 in Sydney and still has its Lawson’s tag. It is excellent condition. Old Sepik Bag & Amulet Mask Charm - New Guinea 1960's
A finely made bag and amulet mask collected in the Sepik of New Guinea in the 1960's. The bag is woven string with attached shell and teeth and has a rich colour from age and use. Inside the bag was a very small amulet mask which would have served as a protective charm- it is made from the outer half of a nut and has attached trade beads and feather with resin/mud. The bag measures 11cm in height main section of bag or total 38cm high including handle loop mask 4cm carved section or 12cm incl feathers. Registered Post within Australia will cost $7US.
