There is a blackish, reddish tinge, plus what may be some traces of lime however I think its for pigments and not betel nut prep. Antique IATMUL MEI MASK SEPIK RIVER Papua New Guinea PNG Oceanic Tribal Used old
You are bidding on a fine and rare antique Middle Sepik River. Papua New Guinea, Iatmul people's Mei house mask, made of light with pigment decoration, well carved face, inset eyes and elongated stylized nose terminating on a serpent's head. Deep brown patina attesting to years of use, age estimate early 20th. Very good condition, minor insect bites. Height is 61cm/ 24in. Mei masks represent mythical ancestor brother and sister spirits. They are made in pairs and kept in the village chief's house. This is an authenthic tribally used item coming from my personal collection. Modest reserve.

A very nice sepik amulet with its bag. Used as protective amulets. Men were carrying these small carvings with them when going hunting etc. They were always carried in these nets. These bags are rare to find these days. the figure is well carved and sertainly has some age. The carving is comming with good provenance. Its collected in the early 70.S but probably the statue is older. name and info is given to the buyer. The figure is around 5 inches high. it comes with a stand so you can choose how to siplay it. loose. In the bag etc. I was able to buy 2 of those. this is my last one if there are any questions. Papua New Guinea Sepik River Savi Wooden Mask Iatmul
This is a wooden Savi Mask from the Sepik River area of Papua New Guinea. It is made of carved wood with polychrome decoration and cowrie shell pupils. Savi masks always feature large eyes and have the tongue sticking out. A Savi is a supernatural being. These masks are made to protect against the black magic of the Savi. Savi masks are not intended to be worn over the face. Condition: The mask is in very good condition. The paint is a bit uneven. As shown in the pictures. Provenance: From Rockford College. Rockford Illinois. The mask was donated to Rockford College by the estate of Laurence Rathsack. Laurence Rathsack traveled extensively and collected in the field.

This fine mask was collected in New Guinea and brought back to Australia in the 1950's. It has been carved from hardwood and decorated with pigments. Various shells and clay, attachments to the ears and perimeter and a real nose bone through the septum. It an aged feel with subdued pigments and some loss to the clay and shells. For sale one Mindimbit female ancestor hand-carved wood figure from the East Sepik Province in Papua New Guinea. The statute is beautifully detailed with sea shell eyes. Natural string earrings, skirt, and vertical feathers extending from her head(see indoor pics#5& 6 for full feather detail) She measures 32" in(81.3cms) tall incl head feathers, 6" in(15.24cms) wide, and 4" in(10.16cms) in depth. There is a crack in the base that was present when I bought it(see pics) I am guessing this can be repaired by someone familiar with wood carved artwork restoration. First time offered from my private collection is this superb and genuinely old example of Sepik River drum. Item is profusely carved in traditional motifs and measures 25 inches in length and head measures 5.5 inches across. Heavy hardwood. Traces of lime rsidue in some of the carving. But most eroded away due to extreme age.

Large Vintage Sepik Mask. Native / Tribal Papua & New Guinea
This auction is for a large vintage PNG Sepik River mask measuring 53.5 cm in height. This is an old and deeply carved piece with the original hand made string through the nose and the earlobes. On the back are labels that read'Sepik River mask' and a much older label that I can't read clearly. It reads something like'Tambarum Anc. Trad Decor Mask Izatmul' YThe mask has some wear to the ochre as per the photos and one of the ears has been glued on. This could easily be reglued or coloured to make it less obvious. This is a stunning old piece of native art and it has quite a lot of age to it. Check out my other auctions. Antique wooden statue-Papua New Guinea/PNG/sepik/tiki/pacific/oceania/polynesian
Up for auction is a large. Wooden, hand-carved, hand-painted ancestor statue from the Sepik River area of Papua New Guinea. These statues were carved as representing the clan's ancestors. The statue is entirely hand-carved from a single piece of native wood and is hand-painted in natural paints. A shell is used for one of the eyes. This statue is in fair condition given its age(from the 1960s) with multiple age-related cracks in the wood, one missing shell in the eye, a missing right arm, and cracks in both legs(they are still attached but are delicate) Please see photos. The statue measures 27in tall, 4in wide, and 5in deep. It comes from a pet-free, smoke-free home. US bidders preferred but will ship internationally. It was produced by the Middle Sepik River Culture of Papua New Guinea; most likely from the Washkuk region. It dates from the early to middle 20th century and is in excellent condition. The mask is carved with an elongated face and stylized tatoos overall. With a frog shaped headdress and a flying bird post or goatee. It has shell eyes and the bird is also set with red stone or glass eyes. It is interesting in it's multiple use of imagery. The mask has a handle bar mustache which also serves as both the wings of the flying bird and the feet of the running frog. This is an exceptional design and ... morealso very well executed. With introduced wire probably from electrical cable in stylised crocodile form. This wire would have replaced cassowary quills, and is a fine display of Melanesian adaptation to modern materials. Nassa shell fringing, and two larger cowrie shells on either side. Worn traditionally in the mouth clamped between the teeth during warfare, however these days more often as an adornment during sing sings. Custom Mounted. Mid 20th Century. Antique Vintage Folk Art Fertility Gourd Dolls Primative Sepik Pacific islands
This auction features an amazing pair of hand painted Fertility Gourd Dolls which I believe are from the Pacific Islands. I'm not positive on their age but they are clearly very old; they are each wearing flattened bottle caps as earrings and are otherwise nude. Their bodies comprised of one gourd with a second for their heads, apparently attached via a wooden rod and then covered with mud clay to form a more natural neck shape. The male doll's mud neck has pulled away but the head appears mounted on a stick underneath the mud and is still attached nice and tight. In no danger of falling off. Their arms and legs are made from cut pieces of gourd and are attached with metal loops. So they dangle loosely, and their hair is comprised of lengths of rope. The male doll measures approximately 14" and the female doll is 13" The ... morefemale doll has lovely and perky strawberry breasts, and the male doll has magic penis action, LOL. A rod going diagonally through his body normally extends outward from his upper back. But when the rod is pressed it'extends' from his front instead. There is clearly some kind of mechanism within the doll holding this rod in place because otherwise it looks as though it would just fall out; it's attached in a way that when at rest it naturally protrudes from his back, his endowment distending only when the rod is pressed inward, and you can feel the resistance, the button releasing the minute you ease up on the pressure.
